There's a lot to like here. Bruce & MacLean have picked two excellent sherry butts.
    • Nose
A very savoury initial impression with nutmeg, orange marmalade, smoked bacon and even whiffs of liquorice root, some medicinal peat and fennel. Plenty of nutmeg, chestnut and tobacco, but also roasted almonds, chocolate and sandalwood. Extremely enticing.
    • Taste
Oily mouthfeel, plenty of ginger and a decent salinity as well, accompanied charred lemon peel, liquorice, and burlap.
    • Finish
Some chocolate-y notes, mocha and char, but also green tea. Long and appealing.

So, after my first review on Oct 22, I eventually got my hands on a bottle in the auction. So detailed notes here we go. But when I see a brand integrating my top 3 favourable elements, peat, sherry, and cask strength into one single bottle, it’s hard to stay objective. Anyhow, this is robust yet not pungent, and can be served neat without getting the palate burnt. A lot of flavours packed together and pushing each other to get to the front stage.

Colour: Dry oloroso 17. Light legs.

    86-90 - A to-share bottle
    • Nose
      88 88
Nose-cooling with ABV strength well-preserved. Spiced (pepper & nutmeg) fruits. Earthy peat mixed in a bowl of iodine. Tobacco leaves. Burnt ends. Roasted peanuts. Charred oak seasoned with cherry liqueur. A whiff of coastal breeze alongside a touch of herbal medicinal note. Smells dry but fresh. Yes, there’s some juicy dark fruits behind too, but the typical Ardnamurchan peat is the star here while sherry was placed in a supporter role.
    • Taste
      88 88
Powerful, spicy (chilli & pepper) and oaky landing. Then syrupy marmalades drizzled on top of burnt oak. Seaside bonfire with peat as the accelerant. Dark fruits (plums, figs) gradually surface, coating the palate and taking over the spices and oak. Eventually, it all gives way to the malt and ends on the zingy barley sugar-type sweetness side.
    • Finish
      85 85
Long, ashy, slightly tannic finish. Fresh, green fruits, peat and charred oak lingering with a few peppery spices.

Nose: frazzles and recently cleaned floors, melba toast and macerated cherries with flaked dark chocolate, burnt ends and corn thins, corn nuts and rancio
Palate: roasted figs and plum duff, stewed prunes and espresso powder
Finish: charred peppers and briquettes, crystallised violets and ancho chillis

    With water
Nose: acorn meal, jamon iberico, jambalaya and turmeric, again corn based snacks come to the fore- flaming hot monster munch?
Palate: softer- sugarplums and fruit jellies, sour grape skittles
Finish: membrillo and grape must, a mild red zhug and welch's grape jelly

Tasted at an Adelphi event. Two peated sister casks. Both sherried. Very well balanced and mouthwatering.

8/10 - I'll get a bottle unless my bank account says otherwise.

Coastal peat. Tobacco leave. Smooth sherry. Savoury & syrupy. My guess is it's around 20-30 ppm.

This bottling carries quite some kudos, now fetching three times the [already specialist] rrp on the ‘secondary’.

C: With some engaging push n pull action, all is good with this bottling. Tasty stuff from a good cask, naturally.

Neck pour disappoints somewhat. Think this will improve after being opened a while. Neck pour was a bit strenuous and had to wrap my mind around.

Invitingly rich sherry notes mixed with citrus peat on the nose. Very smooth and enveloping on the palate, with a beautiful integration and balance between the chocolate, orange oil, mocha, peat and lemon cake. Impressive elegance for such a young whisky.

    official description:

"MacLean & Bruce" bottling of Ardnamurchan whisky

The first independent bottling of Ardnamurchan Single Malt Scotch whisky, selected and bottled in association with Charles MacLean of "MacLean & Bruce". Huge thanks to Adelphi & Ardnamurchan for allowing us this tremendous privilege.

Adelphi Limited Ardnamurchan 2015, 59.3% vol.

    £85.00 - 1333 bottles

5 year old Single Malt Whisky from cask nos. 332 and 333

Drawn from 2 sister ex-Oloroso Sherry butts, this is a deep, polished chestnut colour with bright amber lights.

On the nose, a bouquet of dark cherry liqueur chocolates with grated nutmeg, initially nose drying and eucalyptic. Rum Toft in the development with plums, peaches and oranges, becoming more savoury: a marmalade-glazed smoked ham (rested), and sweet smoked cheese notes.

An oily, mouth filling texture, starting tangy with a mid-palate of edible dried seaweed and sea salt, then roasted sweet chestnuts (slightly smoky from the fire), new hessian and autumn bonfires. Complex and ever-changing, like the weather on Ardnamurchan.
