I really like this dark fruity, deep and complex bottling. It brings heavy, dark aromas with a light kind into the glass. Opposites that complement each other in a beautiful way. The union of opposites: the high priestess
    • Nose
Dark sweetness of dates and plums, but covered in spicy wood and old leather. Increasing warmth frees the alcohol, which brings a subtle chilli heat, but also tangy citrus aromas. A little nut chocolate can also be found.
    • Taste
Fruity, raisin-like sweetness together with a chilli heat make the start. Then the dates and more distinct oak spice can be found again than in the nose. Dark chocolate and walnuts with the slightly bitter shell. In addition, a subtle flavor that I cannot classify.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is long, persistent and dark and sweet. Spicy and tart notes ultimately take the lead.

Very fruity in the beginning. Raisins, dates and cherries. But also oranges, lemon, cranberries and blackberries. Sweet notes now like honey and caramel. At the end darker notes like cinnamon, chocolate and balsamico.
    • Taste
      86 86
Only a bit fruity on the palate. Raisins and cherries. Immedaitely after you'll find darker and more bitter notes. Think of cinnamon, cloves, malt and chocolate. Also some honey and oak. At the end some ginger, leather and walnuts.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium-long. With notes of oak, cinnamon, malt and a bit of ginger.

Surprising dram for sure. Starts off in the nose as a typical sherried whisky, but in taste it suddenly turns into way more licorice. Only after some time, red fruity notes peep around in taste as well.
    Very pleasant.

Quite some punching alcohol, fruity, red fruits, berries, raisins. Ripe apples, a sour touch.
    • Taste
      88 88
Quite some power, a lot of licorice now, sal ammoniac, quite surprising! Spicy. Later on more red fruity notes, plums, raisins, some blueberries.
    • Finish
      87 87
More smooth now, still licorice dominating. Spicy. Middle long. Blueberries later on, the licorice goes more to the background.

Sherry-fruit-leather aroma. Spicy-bitter-creamy taste. The finish is average. Good molt. 22-22-22-22

Definitely a good, rather palatable Deanston.
Classic sherry notes are clearly recognizable, but overall rather elegant and subtle.
For me, plum, a little tobacco and old leather and a hint of sawdust dominate the nose.
In terms of taste rather unobtrusive. Dark fruits, spices, light sweetness with honey, hardly any acid.
The finish is medium long with a little wood and honey. Coffee and pepper also remain.
Overall, the aroma density is somewhat more subdued. I don't find any winter spices. With a lot of imagination, maybe nutmeg. For me, absolutely not a bad, but also not a conspicuous Deanston from the sherry barrel. I think a few percent more with a corresponding increase in the flavor load would have done him good.

  22. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A sherry cask-matured single malt that I only liked on the second sip. Despite the maturation in a first-fill sherry butt, one should not expect a sherry bomb with lush notes of raisins, molasses, cinnamon and dark chocolate. This Deanston is much more discreet in its aroma, with subtle fruit notes, warming spice tones and leather as well as tobacco leaf notes, which nevertheless provide a coherent image of a well-matured whisky from the southern Highlands.

I thank whic (Whiskycircle) for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Sweet toffee on the nose with fruity notes of plums and dates. Then spicy aromas come into play with oak, tobacco leaves and leathery tones. Floral notes emerge in the background with a touch of fresh citrus peel.
    • Taste
Intense and subtly sweet on the palate with toffee, dates and creamy fruit notes. Warm spices from a pinch of cinnamon, some pepper and oak. Becomes slightly drier towards the finish with tobacco leaves and again the leathery notes.
    • Finish
The finish shows a medium length with some creamy honey, slightly bitter orange peel and warming tobacco notes.

With water: After the addition of water, clearly more alcoholic tones on the nose, plus more floral notes as well as some dates, vanilla, honey and the proven tobacco leaf note. Creamier, but also tingling on the palate with fruit notes, caramel, some espresso and tobacco leaves. Less spicy and slightly warming. The finish is still long with caramel, dry oak, tobacco and leathery notes.

Nose: The nose is rather fruity. Oranges, raspberries, ripe apples and raisins. But with a little time in the glass, the nose changes towards dry sherry. The sweetness fades into the background and wood and leather take over the helm. Then red fruit again. Develops great, if not a bomb of complexity, but not killed by sherry either. Here, too, the alcohol is perfectly integrated.

Taste: Everything fits together for me on the tongue. Sweet, spicy oak notes and subtle fruit are perfectly balanced. A little honey, dark chocolate, dark malt and a pinch of cinnamon add to this. Over time, the fruit becomes clearer again in the direction of cooked plums. Creamy without being oily. Great!

Finish: medium. The finish is less bitter than expected. A little honey, pepper and cocoa remain.

It's a lot of fun! Very good 88 points from me.
