    Delicious.
    Not oversherried,not too smokey and full of spice.

    NOSE: Bacon, tar, salty hemp ropes, dried kelp, fat/oily notes, cured lemons, clean wood smoke, iodine. (90p)
    TASTE: The arrival is pure smokey barley juice with sparkling fresh sea water. On the mid palate it becomes richer and oilier, adds some black pepper, fat olives and lots of cured lemon brine – bring out the tagine! (90p)
    FINISH: More lemon and fat smoke. Or smoked lemon. Or fat lemon smoke. Pick the one you like, either way it’s juicy and nice. (90p)
    OVERALL: A lovely semi-youngish whisky from the smoked bacon factory which is Caol Ila. Water does not change it very much. Consistent quality production, Caol Ila and good cask selection, North Star! TOTAL SCORE 90 points.

    A Caol Ila with an age statement of over 10. From a Sherry Cask? Count me the fuck in. Normally these whiskies are over 100 but this was available for a super fair price of around 80€. For that price. This is a must have! Luckily I got one of only 410 bottles.

      quite earthy and muddy, salty, smoked deer meat, cold ash, wet tobacco leaves, limes, different spices, is that wasabi? black olives and if you dig deep you get a nice sherry note in the background with raisins, dark grapes and blackberries.

      Smoke is very subtle, sherry is on the front foot here, starts sweet with blackberries and cherries and rasberries followed by black olives, then the peat kicks in very meaty and salty, I get cooked pork ,dried salted cod, limes but then it takes another turn towards a sweet mouth with orange peel honey/maples sirup and another kick of limes and it takes another lap back to where it started… IMPRESSIVE

      Very long: Starts again quite earthy and smoky but the smoke is not dominant and rather in the back and well integrated, this is soon replaced by olives, artichockes, basically a lot of Italian antipasti and a freshly done road in the heat. The sherry is in the background but keeps pushing to the front with dark berry marmalade orange peel and raisin. This is then followed by a stunning saltiness and that classic caol ila smoke.

    Not a life changing dram.
    But very well crafted sherried peaty whisky.

    Sherry influence is little shy right after opening.
    Just give it a little time and things change.

    Peat & Sherry influencest are not too heavy. Just pleasent.

    I am typically very sensitive against sulphuric notes when it comes to sherried caol ila, but this one is free from any sulphur as far as i can tell.

    Right amount peat combined with right amount of sherry from great casks free from sulphur.

    Again, nothing exceptionally special.
    It is simply a very well crafted whisky offered at a great msrp.
    But again, maybe that's something exceptionally special these days. You know, we just can't find good whiskies offered at a just price!

    The characteristic aromas point to Caol Ila, so the sherry barrel was used well and does not kill the distillate. With only 11 years of maturation enough power remains, but without disturbing immaturity becoming noticeable.

      fine smoke and cold ash mixed with caramel and sweetish vanilla, plus oak wood, oily hints of cured fish and smoked ham, candied citrus fruits with pepper, ground cloves and cinnamon, pistachio, medicinal tones and plaster of paris, a little honey, banana, you notice the sherry first the occasional raisins and then subtle red berries and nuts, some balsamic vinegar and popcorn, tea and rosemary

      Sweet vanilla with smoked malt and cold ash, tons of liquid honey, spicy oak after ground clove, light sherry influences, a little caramel, salty and oily with a touch of pepper, earthy citrus and cocoa notes, again slightly medicinal, banana and nut mix, traces of sulfur

      Honey sweet and cold ash, salty and earthy and oily, malt and citrus hints, caramel and cocoa, dry oak with moderate spice, banana and vanilla, smoked ham, resinous pine needles, removes sherry and leather

    N: Our last dram of this 12-dram flight is this second offering from PM who had reservations about sharing it as he regards it highly,.. so thankyou. Octomore & Glen Scotia are initial guesses which means I could be on the wrong island,.. or peninsula. Leathery > meaty < malty,… oily-medicinal-clean garage-y/metals/sweat/dank notes. It’s “,.. off profile”, says PM. [Revealed, I’d have never guessed Caol Ila]. This whisky must carry a very high abv. It screams of barley despite the [PX or oloroso?] sherry influence.

    T: Boy what an abv. I reckon this is the strongest of the night [60+?], and yet it’s somewhat easily accessible with water. SMWS Laphroaig > Ardmore?,… not really. Salty-dry – toffee-ish – maltiness all the way with a touch of ground pepper seasoning, this dram is making me hungry. It also prompts the previous banana-ey toffee-d Deanston – in a dirty way – yet this dram is anything but dirty. It’s firm and direct, no messing. Complexity lies in the transition. Nice!

    F: As a youthful [< 10yo?] presentation, the [PX?] cask influence isn’t exactly passive yet the powerful eggy-ish custard-powder/hot chocolate spirit remains un-ruffled/untouched. I should be guessing Caol Ila now but I‘ve been drawn away by the [delicious] ‘off profile nose and palate.

    C: Proof that abv carries flavour. A cracking malt, and for £54, it’s a bargain!!
