Whisky Reviews for Glengoyne 1988

  1. Gloin scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

The smell is rather daunting at first, but after a while this turns into the opposite and becomes very pleasant. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not so well involved, otherwise I like the whisky very much. blind tasting
    • Nose
it starts with a light alcoholic stinging, strong mineral notes, the association of salt. These impressions become weaker after the fire has breathed a bit, now comes fruity notes, orange, grapes and somewhat weaker raisins, but in the background is also clearly a fresh, grassy note, almost menthol-like, a bit metallic. Over time, it gets sweeter.
    • Taste
sharp start, heavy alcohol, then come the classic notes of a sherry whisky, raisins and tart chocolate, oak, but it stays sharp all the time, the alcohol could be better integrated, malt, the sherry notes are not dominating everything, I like that, easily astringent, only in the second sip it is a bit milder
    • Finish
Warming and surprisingly pleasant after the sharpness in the taste, oak is the dominant element, rum-grape-nut-chocolate, medium-long

Full body single cask, reminds me of Glenfarclas.
    • Nose
Raisins, chocolate, coffee, shoe polish and leather
    • Taste
Caramel, 90% cocoa chocolate (bitter), full mouth feel.
    • Finish
Long and surprisingly strong, grapefruit, raisins/plums with some sweetness coming through after a while

Caramel nose, chocolate, prune but the alcohol remains, the dilution adds as a hint of sour cherry. Powerful attack, still on the caramel / prune / chocolate combo. The ample mid-palate unfolds a melted oak, a lot of coffee and hazelnut, a slight note of coconut. Nice thick texture, very well integrated alcohol. Beautiful length without bitterness or astringency, kirsche. One can blame the alcohol of the nose but very good butt of Sherry as a whole. A warming classic dram.

Typical Oloroso sherry bomb. Reminiscent of the Glendronachs SC. However, there is a lack of balance and the oak is almost too strong. 89 pt from me. The barrel 718 (PX-Sherry) is a whole lot better. Thanks mister glenfarclas for the two samples.
    • Nose
First something locked. Time does not help, water rather not. Strong wood notes, dark chocolate, cloves, gingerbread, dark fruits and orange peel. Could have been an Oloroso sherry - very deep but you have to be patient.
    • Taste
Strong start with a lot of chocolate and pepper. It becomes more fruity and bitter over time (yes, blood oranges are good at it), espresso notes, the oak already knocks hard at the end
    • Finish
Medium long finish with lots of coffee notes, bitter chocolates and sherry sweetness. The oak is not as strong as feared, in the end becoming dry and bitter

Just like cask 718 another 1988 Glengoyne Sherry beauty. Not as sweet as the 718 PX cask. Therefore more dominant oak.

    • Nose
Needs some time in the glas to open up. Then heavy sherry. Rich, spicy oak. Christmassy. A chocolate fountain that covers ripe strawberries. Some whipped cream on top. Juicy blood oranges together with some coffee.
    • Taste
Very powerful start. Initially sweet cane sugar. Dark chocolate. Then immediatly spicy oak. Lots of it. More bitter chocolate and more blood oranges. Oh how spicy. Heavy oak. Really heavy. Wet leather.
    • Finish
Long finish. Sweet and spicy at the same time. A little bitter and dry. Lots of sherry oak.

Fans of big woody sherry will be filled, the others will blame him for a lack of finesse.
    • Nose
moderately expressive, it must be left a lot of time, very marked by sherry, slightly varnished and woody, a lot of chocolate, coffee, hazelnut, dried fruits in the background.
    • Taste
powerful, well integrated alcohol, quite dry but not too much, very sherry too, a lot of wood, mocha, chocolate, leather, tobacco, hazelnut, some raisins and figs. It is a beautiful sherry monster but it lacks a bit of fruit, freshness and finesse. With water a little more expressive but not necessarily more fruity.
    • Finish
      good length, very woody.

  8. Hans-Ludwig scored this whisky 84 points Moderator

The whisky has a dark, reddish color. In the nose you can find fruity notes of cherries and blackberries. But also notes of malt, toffee, chocolate and vanilla. A light leathery touch is also there. The taste is a combination of a peppery spiciness and dark fruits. But the toffee notes are back. In the background figs and banana. The finish is clearly sharp and leaves no room for other impressions.
In this whisky, the alcohol takes a dominating role and spoils the connoisseur a bit of fun with the other shares. Water makes him more aggressive. At 21 years, one would have expected more mildness and serenity.

Tasting Notes by The Whisky Cask :

Nose: Intense, complex aromas of leather and tangerine, toffee and fresh notes of wood and tobacco.

Taste: Initially dry followed by a pleasant sweetness. Great combination of sweet caramel and vanilla. Fresh aromas, reminiscent of gooseberries, complete this very complex and oily whisky.

Final: Very persistent, pleasantly sweet and spicy at the same time. With hints reminiscent of raw sugar and Havana tobacco leaves.
