Whisky reviews for Strathmill 2009 MSWD

  1. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

exciting whisky, nothing is left of the original brandy. The STR barrel brings a lot of wood, almost a little too fresh wood from the aroma, the aromatic depth is not there as hoped. Good, but not outstanding, a little constructed, too much oak entry.
    • Nose
Sweet and spicy, light wine notes, some balsamic vinegar, but above all a lot of wood, also freshly cut and also a touch of spicier oak, with sweet berry compote.
    • Taste
An idiosyncratic sweetness at the beginning, slightly vinous notes, then a lot of pepper and some bitter oak
    • Finish
the tart oak is very clear, dark chocolate, then a nice sweetness in the background, which pushes itself further forward. The bitter oak notes dominate the rather short finish quite clearly. The few sweet notes still show a little rounding.

The color would have suggested more depth, but it still knows how to convince.

Plums but not too dominant combined with cherries with a lot of wood. It is very woody but the balance is good for it. I would have expected the nose differently, but the way it is, it is good.
    • Taste

Reflects this nose very well. Nothing is lost and the alcohol content fits. He shouldn't have had more or less. You can do without water.
    • Finish
      86 86
Then a long finish. The plum sticks in the mouth. A sociable winter dram. Recommendation!

I like it very much right after pouring it into the glass. However, he loses over time, so 2 points are deducted.
    • Nose

      Deep dark fruits.
    • Taste

      Round in taste, deep.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long finish with dark fruits. Not too intense
