Whisky Reviews for Secret Speyside 1990 ARC

Again a superb Glenrothes pick - yes, it is Glenrothes indeed - by the lads of Whiskybase. Fragile but very complex. Give this whisky time to discover its multi-layered palate. You really don't understand why Glenrothes is not able to bottle these beauties themselves but to leave it to the independent bottlers instead.
    • Nose
Starts gently with yellow fruitiness of Golden Delicious apples, mango, and Galia melon. Followed by some leafiness of hay and heather. Hints of acacia honey and chamomile. Waxed furniture and beehive. Whiff of vanilla. Touch of mineral notes of wet stones and chalk at the background.
    • Taste
Now more on candied oranges and tangerines. Apple compote intermingled with gorgeous bitter-sweetness of grapefruits. Yellow prunes. Some zest of lemon. Apple-mint as well. A little jasmine and geranium leaves give it a pleasant floral depth. Later on, it becomes more chocolatier.
    • Finish
Medium long. A little white pepper. Ginger. Mint at the end. Needless to say that this whisky is very well balanced.

In my opinion, the barrel (especially on the palate) slightly overlays the distillery character, which would have deserved more limelight after 30 years.

Initially quite cautious. Takes its time and is slow to open. When the time comes, a fine acidity (apple cider) comes first, followed by aromatic wood notes. After 25 minutes it becomes spicier and heartier - it goes in the direction of umami. I am reminded of bouillon, fennel and air-dried ham. With water there is a light stone fruit note (apricot?).

Rather barrel-emphasized, with forest honey, cigarette tobacco and straw. Nice and sweet, you are reminded of caramelized popcorn. But you don't necessarily notice the 30 years, it could have gone through for 25. I miss the fruits and / or waxiness that you usually get with this age and barrel combination.

      Straw, tobacco, herbs, honey, mint.
Little bitterness, but at most medium-long for the age.

Nice to drink, very round and balanced, but not very memorable for me.
