My least favourite Octomore to date. That’s not to say it’s a bad whisky, or even a decent whisky: it’s a very good whisky, but my standards for Octomore are so high at this point that even a “just good” whisky is a letdown. There’s a youthfulness here that I don’t usually get so strongly in Octomore – the lack of that note is, to me, part of why Octomore is so magical. There’s still complexity and depth of flavour, but not at the same level as other releases and without that same level of balance.
    • Nose
Strong peat, of course. Rather ashier and more acrid than usual. Strong mineral notes, slate quarry, Grilled lemon and plantain chips. Sweet malty notes - chocolate-glazed donut, buttered brioche toast. Toasted sesame oil. Strawberries and balsamic vinegar. There’s a creaminess that comes out with time – that characteristic Bruichladdich cream cheese frosting note.
    • Taste
Medium-oily texture. Rather acidic and a bit lactic at first, with fresh glazed-fruit sweetness, deepening with time. Grilled citrus, candied ginger, and very dark toast. Nutty and black coffee. Rich umami development, ash, charred steak, iodine. Slightly floral. Sort of a beer-like bittersweet herbalness.
    • Finish
Medium. Sweet-savoury. Lots of dried mushroom. Wort, ginger beer, a bit yeasty. Ash and frozen mud. Lingering salt and cured meat in some Italian cellar.

Clear edge, great fun. Unfortunately, it feels as young as it is most of the time. This makes it difficult to justify the price for me. Full review https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2021/12/23/der-weg-zur-800/
    • Nose
A combination of young notes, with vanilla and pear, the typical farmyard flavors and a spicy, pepper-heavy Asian dish. I'm interested, it starts excitingly. There is also coconut, pineapple and salt.
    • Taste
Spicy, herbaceous and salty. With a good portion of peat. Spicy spiciness on the second sip. Quite with chili and ginger.
    • Finish
Bitter, with a sip of sea water and lemon. Peat also plays along. At first you think it's relatively short, but the citrus notes remain wonderfully long and the peat then turns into a great minerality.

For only my 2nd taste of an Octomore release, this Octomore Edition 12.1, aged 5 years in 1st Fill Bourbon Casks using Scottish Barley was initially the most approachable of the 3 Octomore 12’s released in 2021 (trying all 3 bottles, back-to-back-to-back). There is no denying the monster peat & smoke bomb here, and it’s bold and big, but I was able to appreciate this 12.1 more than my first dram of the Octomore Edition 11.1 a few months back.
    • Nose
      69 69
Campfire smoke, coastal salinity, apples, vanilla.
    • Taste
      71 71
Medium viscosity. Smoky campfire up front, but then I’m able to get past it and get notes of butterscotch, ginger, sweet funnel cake drizzled with honey.

2nd dram: There’s some initial ginger spice at the front palate, with a nice fade. Apples, vanilla, honey, cereal notes, granola bar.
    • Finish
      68 68
Long. Smoky, fading ginger, apples, honey, cereal notes again.

    Octomore 2015 - 2021, 5 years, 12.1, 59.9% alc. Original bottling (2021). Ageing: Bourbon casks

Nose: Strong, the nose has to get used to the alcohol for a moment. Then first of all a lot of soot and ash, a bit old chimney. Then the smoke becomes sweeter and slightly greasy, it smells of grill and bacon. In the background there is still some tar and very mild kitchen herbs. Seems a bit closed at first.

Palate: This Octomore starts out sweet with peat smoke, but is quite lively and quickly increases in spiciness. I find apple peel and slightly unripe pear, ash and a lot of pepper. There is also orange zest, grass and some maple syrup, then the pepper gets stronger and stronger. Towards the end, a spice mixture of pepper, ginger and chilli take over, all other flavors have disappeared.

Finish: Very long, still with a strong sharpness, espresso and cocoa powder, fudge and sea salt. Caramel sauce lasts longer.

Conclusion: closed on the nose, increasingly sharp on the palate - these two experiences unfortunately devalue this bottling somewhat. Still, it remains a really good Islay malt. 85/100 points (2022)

C: A clear step up from the 10.3, this one is deliciously barley-faithful once again, with more depth, texture, and intent! The problem again is, I’m not sure I’d pay £80 for it, let alone £160. For me, it has to be Port Charlotte’s Islay Barley [for £65] all day long. Market forces aside, it’s equally quality gear.

    1692) Bruichladdich, Octomore, The Impossible Equation, 12.1, 2015/2021, 5YO, Scottish Barley,130.8PPM

Sipping this kiln-soul elixir after an eight course Chinese meal + many drops of Classic Laddie has proven NOT a problem at all. The well muscle, nurtured 100% in 1st fill American Oak's juice spring to life both on palate and senses.

Scorching and aggressive as it meant to be, with abyss layer of complexity to explore, when in a tasting mode.

Jammy and smoky sweet like licking on a charred honeycomb, and classic sweet oily leaf of aldehyde and ashy carbon dust.

Exotic and lustrous, exceptional liquid befitting the iconic bottle, especially holding prettily by the good looking lady whisky server.

No details note, busy looking at other pretty objects. Just approximate rating.

sweet.. winey.. and the smoke is vegetal.. reminds of Signatory’s series of six wine barrel Ledaigs.. or the recent Lagavulin 12.. really hardcore whisky.. very unidimensional in the best sense of the word.. it’s just a full-on straight to the heart punch.. the heart of a Scotch drinker

later edit: only after having written and published my small commentary had i seen Archer’s review using the word unidemensional in a negative sense.. what a wonderous drink Scotch is to make 2 people see the same thing from opposite sides of the spectrum!

Octomore and I: will we ever make friends again? This one is so fabulously one-dimensional that I almost have no words to describe the nothingness of aromas.
    • Nose

    • Taste

Biting and very sharp attack. pepper, chili flakes. A compote of pears and apples. Slightly metallic. The sharpness even covers the smoke almost completely. Not much more of the other aromas can be identified next to it.

Thick smoke and calcareous peat, damp sand, fine and iodized salt. a beach in winter, in good weather. Sweet lemony influence, on lime, a zest of grapefruit and exotic fruits. Dry, deep earth, roots, ginger, coconut. Very syrupy and spicy on the palate, chilli, cayenne pepper, star anise. It's warm, intense, on blood orange. Devastating finish, very long, charcoal, cola, varnished wood. Some fir thorns, sandalwood.

Big fat peat. Oily, big huge smoke and for only being 5 years old it has acquired quite the roundness . Straight forward, no funky finishes, and I really like it.

Just to be clear: I like the special finishes and maturations in the Octomore series. And at the same time I love the fact that this is an Octomore plain and simple.

  40. thijs100 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A naked Octomore without much frills.
    • Nose
A hit of vanilla and lemon zest followed by fermented mash, smoked barley husks, peanut skins and light floral notes. Whiffs of mown hay, a touch of pineapple and coconut as well. The peat is part of the supporting cast, certainly not the lead actor.
    • Taste
Nice thick, oily mouthfeel. Arrives on white pepper, creosote and touches of seaweed, accompanied by a whiff of iodine. Smokier than the nose suggests, but that's often the case with these. Finally some charred lemon peel.
    • Finish
Somewhat mossy, herbal and a whiff of pineapple. Lingering leafy smoke.

    NOSE
Crisp, honied orchard fruit, smoke, malt, vanilla pastry, char, baking spice, toffee sweetness and a bit of wax.

This is just plain lovely. It’s warm, it’s fruity, it’s… unexpected.

    PALATE
Minerality, smoke, hay-like malt, lemon curd, toffee, herbal spice, dried orchard fruit, honey and some light char and banana chips.

Darker and heavier than the aroma, but also more spirit-forward with the minerality showing through. Like the aroma, the Octomore 12.2 palate has an unexpected delivery and I’m enjoying it.

    FINISH
Long -> Smoke, brine, vanilla candy and toffee drift to a dry maltiness.

For me the disappointment of the year, in terms of price and not the yellow of the egg. Every barrel of islay that I have tried is better for me ...

  43. WHISKYEUROPA2009 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

... it is described as ... SMELL refreshing citrus zest, paired with earthy peat smoke, vanilla cake and sweet malt sugar. Followed by coconut, chocolate, even more vanilla and caramel, until the whole ensemble ends in a scent that is reminiscent of ash, peat smoke and honey.

TASTE Peppery-sweet with a syrupy texture. The taste is reminiscent of honey, peat smoke, burning wood chips and apricot jam. The next sip opens up aromas of malt sugar, straw, heather and sweet nougat. Mineral-maritime notes, dry, earthy peat smoke and a hint of orange zest and pear candy remain on the palate.

AFTERKLANG The long-lasting finale is characterized by notes of salty caramel as well as floral or herbaceous nuances (dog rose and cowslip) to end in an elegant wave of intense peat smoke.
