It delivers on what is promised, a heavily peated dram with the Sauternes finish bringing a layer of additional complexity with layers of sweet honeyed fruit. This one definitely improves with time in a glass which bumps it an additional point. Definitely a dram that far outperforms it's young age statement. Value (£130) : 5/10
    • Nose
As most Octomores, the smoke is not over the top or extreme in nature as the ppm on the bottle may suggest. However, it is still very present and noticeable upfront. Quite earthy in character, I imagine roasted nuts next to an array of barbecued meats, definitely some smoked bacon. The marine character that is classic of Bruichladdich is also even more present in this nose. Then the sweetness arrives. Lovely honeydew melons, juicy peaches, pineapples, baked apples and some tart, zesty lemon. There is also that fresh, malty quality to it with toasted cereal. A light prickle of white pepper.
    • Taste
Immediately oily and thick, this clings to the mouth. It really has a huge impact here. It starts off with those sweet, honeyed fruits. Especially honeydew and peaches. There is also a vanilla sponge character to it. Then I get toasted cereals again and digestive biscuits. A punch of peat smoke, more intense now, that oily character spreads it all over the palate, more ashtray-like in character now. There is still that tartness of freshly squeezed lemons. More honey-glazed barbecued meats with roasted nuts sprinkled with sea salt. the salty Seaspray build. With time, Starts off with warm black pepper but as you keep it in the mouth, the heat builds into a chilli prickle.
    • Finish
Definitely long lasting. Tart fruits, I get tangerines and lime zest. Darker notes of heavy roasted coffee and bitter dark chocolate come forth. Tannins from the oak and some spices of cumin and smoked paprika. More meaty smoked bacon. Again, that sea salt builds in intensity. Peat smoke lasts in the mouth for ages after swallowing, especially at the back of the throat.

Pretty good. In my opinion, the finish drops a little. Otherwise, this is a great dram. The Sauterne finish does exactly what it should, the Octomore, too. Full review alongside 12.1 and 12.3: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2021/12/23/der-weg-zur-800/
    • Nose
      88 88
Wonderful earthy and peaty notes mix with some fruit. Especially peaches that have already fermented nicely or perhaps lay in the bowl for a little long. After some time, vanilla is also clearly present.
    • Taste
      90 90
All about earthy and peaty notes you can imagine. An oily consistency lies over the entire mouth. Then there is a nice seafood dish with garden fruits in between.
    • Finish
      87 87
The fruits fade into the background and remain as a slight sweetness. Salty notes and a decent amount of coal remain.

Trying the 2nd bottle in the 12 series from Octomore, I was most looking forward to the Sauternes Cask Finish and what flavors would be imparted here with such a powerful peat level (129.7 ppm). Compared to 12.1, Octomore Edition 12.2 was generally smoother on the palate, a bit more balanced, but it did seem very similar to 12.1 in some ways.

I wasn’t able to really discern any noticeable Sauternes Cask influence, but perhaps it’s due to my untrained palate (for peat), palate fatigue (from trying 12.1, 12.2, and 12.3 all in 1 sitting), or the Sauternes Cask maturation wasn’t sufficient for the super heavily peated Octomore base.
    • Nose
      67 67
More muted compared to Octomore 12.1. There’s campfire smoke (nothing medicinal like Laphroaig). Honey, vanilla, light melons, some earthy tones.
    • Taste
      70 70
Definitely smoother on the palate compared to Octomore 12.1. Smoky, creamy, there’s a better balance with smoke and spice here. More campfire, some honey sweetness (not much), maybe stone fruits (some fruits). Not really noticing any distinct Sauternes flavors coming through.
    • Finish
      67 67
Shorter than the Octomore 12.1. It’s certainly a smoother fade. Still smoke present on the finish, some honey, smoked / barbecued fruits.

  14. Dre73 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Very powerful, intense whisky, with certainly heavy peaty elements, but certainly not overpowering, enough room for sweet notes and woodsmoke.
    Very attractive dram.

Fake leather, roasted meat, bacon, a bit farmy character. Later on more woodsmoke, and some sweet hints of vanilla.
    • Taste

Strong and powerful, smoky and sweet. Drying mouthfeel, intense, some laurel licorice. Then more sweet smoke, vanilla. Full body.
    • Finish

Still powerful, sweet, sweet smoke to be more specific. Still really intense, some ash and woodsmoke, long finish.

Octomore are always good. However, the quality has decreased over the years, for me. This one is particular because of the Sauternes cask finish. Burnt yellow fruits, with smoked bacon and pepper. Not long enough for an Octomore (if I compare it to older batches).

no dram for every day. You should also give it some time to breathe and to open up the whisky. If you do that, you have a strong friend by the fireplace who will literally take you by storm.

Promising nose - but the promise is not kept afterwards. The indication of any PPM you could slowly give yourself away, that only raises false hopes.

Dates wrapped in (smoked) bacon, grape seeds, raspberry sorbet. A fruitiness that I've seldom had in an Octomore before. A freshly polished wooden floor, a bundle of dry herbs.
    • Taste
      84 84
Moderate start (actually) with a fruity-smoky note. Spicy bacon, tar, pepper. Fresh bread dough, yeast, malt. In contrast to the nose, it is hardly herbaceous.

      83 83
In short, even the smoke doesn't last very long. A little pepper, dates, bacon.

Very thick smoke. Marshy peat. We are in the mangrove, we hear the exotic birds chirping. The damp creepers, the palm trees, the tall grass. Sweet fruity flavor that rises on the marzipan, the orgeat syrup. But everything is quickly drowned in an opaque smoke. A few drops of caramel. White grape, lychee. Icing sugar. Forest berries, black. Soft mouth entry, then the spices attack, pepper, paprika, ginger, nutmeg. Piles of earthy, oily peat. Behind, blueberry tart. Fig filling. All sprinkled with ashes. Holly leaves. Campfire. Long, powerful finish, which crushes everything in its path, woody, mellow, but also charcoal. Bread cake. Plum liqueur. Muscat grape. Thistle. Oak bark. Slight bitter note, and finally a little liquorice.

And again that is awesome. I only need very small sips in my mouth. It's so intense that you only need half of a normal sip in your mouth for 5 years to be incredibly ingenious in the aftertaste that is a bit short but the mouth makes up for it 3 times. The aftertaste reminds me of the ingenuity of the old LAPHROAIG 10 CASK STRENGH RED STRIPE ... it also has such an ingenious aftertaste that I have not tasted before with any other newer Lapi 10 Cask Strengh.
And the Octomore 12.2 has something that tastes incredibly awesome.

    NOSE
Smoke, vanilla frosting , fruit cake, dried orchard fruit, honey, white raisins, earthy hay-like malt, herbal spice and a touch of minerality.

There is a juicy quality to it that’s very enjoyable and pairs well with the earthier notes.

    PALATE
Smoke, sweet BBQ, toffee, white raisins, dried fruit, earthy hay-like malt, baking spices and a touch of sweet tobacco and herbal.

The darker notes continue to surface as it opens and after a while the Octomore 12.2 comes across like a dark and fruity, balanced, combo of peat-n-sweet.

    FINISH
Long -> Peat, toffee, dried fruit, herbal spice and a touch of toffee.

  48. thijs100 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

With a sweeter profile, the Octomore 12.2 offers extra layers of depth and interest.
    • Nose
Initially some white chocolate quickly followed by honeyed breakfast cereals, tinned pineapple and a few drops of triple sec. The earthy peat smoke and notes of charred beef are subtle. Balanced almost to perfection.
    • Taste
A sweet arrival complementing the sticky, oily mouthfeel. Good amount of white pepper accompanied by honey and stone fruits like nectarines, but also smoked oysters and earthy peat smoke. The touch of aniseed is refreshing.
    • Finish
Whiff of olive brine and a decent pinch of salt. Pickled lemons as well. Lingering notes of charcoal.

  49. galg33 scored this whisky 89 points Member Senior

Nose: A nice twist with the Sauternes – More fruity on the entry with sweet smoke interwoven with ripe melon, overripe blood orange, and earthy notes, the smoke is everywhere, and the peat reek is softened by the ripe fruits sitting on vanilla cream and crushed caramel and honey biscuits in addition to more pine needle notes we’ve also seen on the 12.1.

Palate: Sweet and lovely with the fruit really evident on the first sip: peaches in sweet syrup, more melon, and honey. Pepper comes on the 2nd wave of sensations, as as well as sweet peat smoke, earth and chili heat, fresh vanilla cream and wood spices, a bit of ash and

Finish: sweet-ish with a salty edge, with more earthy peat, sweet bonfire smoke, a hint of smoked fish.

Conclusion: This, my friends is what i’m talking about! this is a terrific Octomore. I am a fan of Sauternes aging for those lovely peaty monsters and this is no different. Lovely stuff. Get one. It’s not cheap, I know – but it’s a keeper.

  50. WHISKYEUROPA2009 scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

... it is described like this ... SMELL Melon, honey and smoked almonds - a wonderful note that fades into toasted oak and earthy-dry smoke over time. The scent is reminiscent of orange zest, peach and juicy lemon. The malty sweetness underlines notes of dried apples and pear candies. The conclusion is a phenolic-ethereal interplay of pine resin and peat smoke.

TASTE Seductively soft and fruity sweet with lemon, vanilla, juicy melon and orange blossom. The second sip brings out the structure, which is characterized by the French sweet wine barrels. Caramel, cake spices, fruit soaked in syrup and a certain dryness that bridges the gap between smoke and malty sweetness.

and in the AFTERKLANG Salty citrus notes and a little smoke, which gradually increases in volume and at the end dominates the entire palate. Here, too, the true DNA of a classic Octomore can be seen.
