Now the spot range is complete again: after a blue spot was last available in 1964, the green spot held the flag for many years as the only remaining representative of the single pot still Irish whiskey genre, gradually holding up the old range the Yellow Spot and Red Spot was revived and the Green Spot was also brought onto the market in finish variants, now it comes here at the age of seven and as a cask strength variant with a fat 58.7%. It's hard to believe what he's already delivering here at just seven years old - pushes himself directly and very casually to position No. 1 of the spot range.
    • Nose
Although at 58.7% it is clearly in the high-proof range, it is not locked, but instead provides a rich selection of flavors that does justice to a single pot still Irish whiskey: ripe pineapple, mango and papaya, with a good pinch of spices in the form of Pepper, marjoram, cinnamon, coriander and cumin. Full and well balanced, with toasted aromas, dry wood and dark chocolate.
    • Taste
Strong and mouth-filling, spices first, the fruit just behind it. Pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, coriander, curry powder and cumin, followed by a note of tropical fruit that is otherwise only found in older SPS. Some liquorice, white coffee and freshly roasted coffee beans.
    • Finish
He takes his time, lingers on the palate for a long time, the spices spread out as generously as camels on the Rose Monday procession in Cologne. Still the tropical fruits, above all mango, banana and papaya, milk chocolate, honey, and finally some dry wood.

nice nose, but then young, although not bad in general and quite drinkable ...

    Sweet Cherries

You are probably already familiar with The Green Spot – with no age statement – and Yellow Spot (12 years). In 2018 Mitchell & Son added a 15 years old Red Spot. And now they make us jump for joy with the Blue Spot, and Irish whiskey of only seven years of age at cask strength. According to insiders casks aged 7 to 20 years went into the mix, but as the SWA prescribes, you must mention the youngest age on the label. If you wish to put an age on the label at all, of course. It is a vatting of former bourbon, sherry and Madeira casks. The last time a Blue Spot appeared on the market was in 1964, by the way.

Oh, my, what a good nose! Flambeed banana, caramelized hazelnuts, roasted almonds, baked apples, sweet cherries and toffee apple. Hint of freshly roasted coffee with some cinnamon and cloves. Very rich and aromatic. If he can keep this up on the palate we have a belter in the glass.

Nicely creamy on the palate. Despite the high ABV and sturdy spiciness, the arrival is swift and offers a panoply of stewed fruit and honey. Toffee, hazelnuts, almonds, vanilla and again those sweet cherries. I'm sure the Madeira is responsible for a lot of the character of this whiskey. Very, very good.

In the medium long finish the coffee returns, upholstered with a pinch of never ending spices like cloves, cinnamon and licorice.

    Excellent! Thanks, Benny.

An incredibly good mix between the single pot still whiskey and the chosen barrels. Everything comes through, but never out of balance. Full of flavour. Possibly the best out of the Spot range that I ever tried.
    • Nose
A whiff of sweet cherries, almost candy-like. Red apples and later also ripe bananas. Roasted almonds. There’s a mixture of spices, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. A hint of coffee and caramel.
    • Taste
A rather nice array of spices, mixed with Madeira influence. Cinnamon, cloves and black pepper. Honey and toffee. Vanilla and almonds. Sweet cherries again, but less candy-like as in the nose. A touch of oak. Coffee with sugar.
    • Finish
Mid-long. Liquorice and the same spices as on the palate. Toffee (for the Dutch, it reminded me of Haagse hopjes).
