Once a year it's red time - has there ever been a real loss? In any case, I can't remember any of them. Smoke and fruit in perfect harmony, for me a flawless 90s.
    • Nose
With a tasty mixture of warm smoke, mild spices and red fruits, the nose is immediately very inviting. Blackberries, blueberries, strawberry jam, clouded with a delicate smoky note. From a distance, a little Fassmoder greets you, but he blends in perfectly. Freshly ground pepper, clove powder, thyme.
    • Taste
Strong start, ensures a nice creamy feeling on the tongue at the beginning. Sweet, but not too sweet, fruit mix made from strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries and blackberries. At first one could get the impression that the fruit notes played in a candy-like manner (is someone waving a glazed apple?), But the smoky note that is very present on the palate ensures that the fruit does not drift off. Pepper, nutmeg, and thyme do their part, while dark chocolate and coffee beans add depth.
    • Finish
Medium to long, slightly dry. The smoky note has formed and takes over the leadership, chasing the fruits across the yard as recruits. Amazing that there is still some of the initial creaminess left.

The Malbec casks have certainly left their mark on this whisky, bringing dark red fruits and oak tannins while still retaining some classic Campbeltown character. Springbank definitely made the right choice batting together refill casks as first-fill casks for such a long finish may well have overpowered the base spirit. Value (£57) : 9/10
    • Nose
The nose is the star of the show for me. I get almost like a cherry liquorice initially. Developing into rhubarb jam and yellow plums. Butterscotch and molasses. Vanilla spongecake with a syrupy strawberry reduction. Classic heavy Springbank spirit with a dry, earthy peat smoke in the background. Wet rocks and sand by the beach. White pepper spice with cardamom and ginger. Now cherry linctus. This is one where I can easily nose for an hour as it's that complex and balanced.
    • Taste
Oily in texture. The initial palate is jammy red fruits and sweet fudge. Fresh red apples. More vanilla biscuits and cherries. Grapefruit peel. Ginger spice hits. A touch of bitter dark chocolate that develops into more oak tannin led flavours. Overbrewed tea and tobacco leaves. A slight note of salty iodine. Some cocoa nibs and coffee beans. Quite drying.
    • Finish
Medium in length. Continuing on from the development it retains that tannin-heavy influence from the Malbec casks. More coffee and tobacco with some fresh leather now as well. Once that drying sensation subsides, the maritime salty sea air becomes much more prominent with a lingering ashy smoke.

Hmm, so far for me one of the weaker Longrow Reds, somehow there is nothing that really captures me completely, no missing notes and of course well drinkable, but for 100+ € I don't need a bottle.
    • Nose
At first a bit pungent on the nose, then red berries come through, slightly sweetness, raspberry, very little smoke, slightly waxy, waffle, after a while it is more pleasant on the nose, chocolate, dirty, it is a real longrow, could also bring some sulfur, also tobacco
    • Taste
Oily, raspberry, sour, here medium smoke, caramel, vanilla, dark, creamy, but somehow it doesn't ignite properly
    • Finish
ashy smoke, apple, fruit bowl, creamy, the mouth is slightly covered, a little mint

Really good! Only 10 years old but what a nice thick mouthfeel and great balance. This is the textbook example of how red wine barrels can actually add something without it becoming overpowering.
    • Nose
Red berries, blackberries and sweet strawberries, almost candy-like. Quickly followed by a whiff of peat. Then I get a candy that reminds me of my childhood. They look like pears (a red fruity candy with sugar on it, who knows the name of this candy?). Then minerals and a touch of lemon. A farmyard smell and later also vanilla.
    • Taste
Milk chocolate. Followed by all those berries again, but instead of the red berries, I now have raspberries. Lemons again too. And a little bit of smoke and a hint of pepper.
    • Finish
Mid-long to long and a bit drying. The Peat is more pronounced here. Milk chocolate. Oranges and it’s slightly peppery.

A home run by Springbank, I feel the fact that these Malbec casks are actually refills is key to the wonderful balance.
    • Nose
Lots of minerals and gentle earthy peat smoke, accompanied by bung cloth, blackberries en strawberries. This noses way beyond its years. Lots of tobacco, smoked wood chips and gentle notes of milk chocolate. A touch of rhubarb and cinnamon too.
    • Taste
Fantastic oily mouthfeel with some lovely citrus (grapefruit) and tropical notes, as as well as jammy red fruits. Of course, there's smoke and a bit of ash. It wouldn't have been Longrow otherwise, but it is in perfect balance with all other elements. Lovely salinity and a pinch of pepper too.
    • Finish
Somewhat drying, but a nice minerality, as well as wood smoke. Lingering orange peel.

Today I'm trying this Longrow which was part of a virtual tasting session with Springbank. This sample was at 56.7%ABV. Let's see how it tastes.

Nose begins with stewed red fruits, oak tannins, wet cardboard, light smoke, vegetal notes, perhaps some cinnamon in background.

Palate gives red fruits, smoke, salt, sugar cinnamon.

Finish has more red fruits, cinnamon, baking spices, and some salt to dry the moderate finish.

Nose: Hot raspberries mixed with hot changes underlaid with a nice citrus freshness. The smoke, a small wood fire by the sea, mineral notes of mussel shells, slightly salty with some laurel, mint and something earthy like an autumn forest floor and umami.

The taste is even more expressive than on the nose. Hot raspberry and sour cherry mix with a splash of lemon juice, but also pear juice, oranges. The smoke is sooty, mineral, maritime as in the nose. In addition, intense umami notes of soy sauce, meat bouillon, red meat. A little pepper is added to the bay leaves and mint and I also noted chestnut honey.

The finish is long, especially mineral and maritime, but the fruity and meaty notes also linger subtle.

What can I say, my first Longrow Red and I'm really excited. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, can be drunk like 46% percent and the abundance of flavors is simply brilliant.

Not sure this works well with the malbec...
