Old single grains from sherry casks can be really nice whiskeys, as this full, complex bottling proves. The Lowland whiskey shows a nice interplay with the wood and the sherry.
    • Nose
Clear, sweet grain notes with equally clear sherry aromas. Nuts and caramel, with honey, spicy oak and some chocolate. The alcohol is only noticeable in the background.
    • Taste
Sweet and Creamy. Clear sherry with plums, apricots and nuts. Pleasant flavor, both from wood and from spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans add to the bouquet.
    • Finish
Sweet, spicy and warming aftertaste that doesn't want to end.

I received this whiskey as a blind sample and classified it as a Glenfarclas Family Cask....
A great grain that doesn't have to hide from a single malt at all!

  4. Official tasting note

NOSE: Rich and oily with runny honey, Scottish raspberries and burnt sugar

PALATE: Burnt orange zest, dark chocolate, blueberries and toasted oak

FINISH: Salted caramel chews, strawberries, ginger nut biscuits and spice (CGL)

sweet but also very spicy. The single grain is just a lot of fun due to the refill sherry barrel maturation. There's pepper in the whiskey. Quite complex, but drinkable, you can tell the age, but it is not a hindrance. A very successful single grain for me.
    • Nose
First a few typical grain aromas, a little coconut, a little glue, but the nutty sherry with beautiful dried fruits comes into play immediately, sweet, but then rather spicy with a cigar box and grandma’s spice cupboard.
    • Taste
sweet and velvety despite cask strength, but anything but tame. Sure, the expected sweet notes of the grain with vanilla and wood, but the beautiful notes of oak and dried fruits fill the mouth.
    • Finish
astonishingly oaky, tart, dark chocolate, but also the sweeter nuances of sherry and raisins, plus clear notes of grain whiskey.

In terms of taste, grain is a world that you have to be keen on. And when the time comes, I always have a lot of fun with it! You rarely have so much wood-influenced 'old school' taste and such an interesting character in a bottle that is more than fairly priced.
    • Nose
      88 88
Voluminous and rich, lots of honey and a nice orange note that is somewhat reminiscent of Cointreau. In addition today a very intensive furniture polish and the classic oak wood note à la old closet. Looks oily and just really aged. Screams out for the wintry, sweet and spicy aromas of the Christmas season. The grain character brings a playful 'schnapps' note into play, which is certainly not noticeable in a negative way. Oldschool wood with honey and orange liqueur - Nice!
    • Taste
      88 88
Here now clearly tart, stronger and spicier. The wood turns out to be relatively dry, the furniture polish becomes dustier. Over time, charcoal combines with honey and a beautiful burnt sugar sweetness. Tart dark chocolate and dry nutmeg round off the whole thing. Man that's fun today!

Very dry and increasingly bitter. The long influence of wood is noticeable again and slowly joins again with creamy honey and burnt sugar. The orange flashes through again and shows caramelized orange peel.

A great, rich and complex single grain whisky from the Lowlands. Orange fruit meets sherry, chocolate and warming Christmas spices. Single Grain, Sherry Butt and Douglas Laing - nothing can go wrong with such a combination!

I thank deinwhisky.de for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Immediately notes of aged sherry flow into the nose, accompanied by honey, oranges and caramel. Accompanied by some blueberry, oranges and dark chocolate with spicy oak, some cinnamon and a touch of walnut in the background. The alcohol is well integrated.
    • Taste
Deliciously sweet on the palate with sherry, creamy honey, some blueberries and juicy oranges. This is accompanied by warming notes of Christmas spices, cinnamon, nutmeg and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
The finish is long lasting and pleasantly warming with oak spice, ginger and nutmeg. With a light note of orange peel and walnuts towards the end.

With water: After adding a few drops of water, a little more freshness on the nose with juicy oranges, honey, oak spice and orange zest. Hazelnut and milk chocolate in the background. Still sweet on the palate with brown sugar, honey, biscuit and milk chocolate. Accompanied by slightly warming spices with ginger and some cinnamon. The finish is still long and slightly tingling with orange peel, nutmeg and creamy chocolate.

A strong, intensely matured single grain. Fits perfectly in the run-up to Christmas.
    • Nose
Cinnamon, burnt sugar, plums, Christmas flavors, nuts, honey.
    • Taste
Sweet. Malty, lots of grain. Caramel. Toasted oak. Dark chocolate. Nutmeg. Pleasant fur on the tongue from the oak tannins.
    • Finish
Spicy. Fine dry. Ginger. White pepper.
