Whisky Reviews for Glenrothes 1997 Whb

15 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.84 points

  1. aspa scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    nose
A lot of sweet sherry, caramel, dark honey, maple syrup. Wine aromas, but sweet, not tart or bitter. Cinnamon and chilli chocolate, leather couch and a slight hint of the oriental spice market. Soft but very automatic, perfectly integrated alcohol.

    taste
A lot of power in the beginning but completely without burning. So old, cask-strong whisky! Less sweet now, more bitter than sweet sherry. Great! Lots of cinnamon, raisins, very dark chocolate and espresso. Then again very strong red wine. Nice play of flavors.

    Exit
Light oak with vanilla, slightly bitter and still more tart than sweet. Otherwise it goes exactly the same as in the taste. Medium length, and then the sherry slowly fades away in your mouth.

    Conclusion
Very tasty sherry malt, interesting how the nose is sweet and the taste is then rather bitter. Probably dominated by the barrel, but in a very tasty way.

Powerful in the start and in the aromas, a beautiful malt that contrasts the sweetness of a dessert wine with tart herbs and therefore has a very balanced effect.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

OK, so I would never have come to Glenrothes here and neither would the 23 years. The barrel before the finish was probably quite dead ...
    • Nose

Apples and pears, very juicy and ripe, shortly afterwards some grass and slightly fermented fruit are added, also a hint of caramel, a lot of fruit acid, then cookie dough. After standing for a while, it has a slightly mineral effect and there are herbs, the fruits are still ripe. Hand warmth opens it, fruits and biscuits are intensified, herbs can only be guessed at, but later it looks very grassy.
    • Taste
      86 86
Quite a powerful start, very sweet and tart herbal notes are balanced here. The mouthfeel is creamy. Honey, candied fruit, a strong acidity that still remains subtle and a little liquorice at the back.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish warms up nicely, sweet and tart notes go at the same speed, overall medium-long. Quite satisfactory.

Whisky broker regulars table Dram # 4
For me an archetypal Oloroso ripening that shows its age.
Glenrothes Muff meets nut, dark fruit and dry oak.

Musty. First of all musty. So real cellar muff.
Then there are herbs, a honey sweet, red wine gums ...
      Very interwoven old flavors.
Roasted and salted almonds, raisins, leather & tobacco. Slight sulfur note.
    • Taste
      91 91
      Mild, beautifully lawful start.
Very oily mouthfeel with full sherry flavors.
      Very dry and nutty.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Long, great finish.
Dry, nut, coffee, dried dark fruits

    Blind tasting

    no painting for me
    that's OVER
in addition very tart and rotten eggs
    • Nose
Sherry, sulfur / rotten eggs, light vanilla, later minimally nutty, slightly flowery

with water: fresher, lots of sherry !!, vanilla pudding, minimally hairy note, shortbread cookies arrive late

from 1920s: vanilla, oak, polish ?, tinged
with water: a lot of a chemical note + slightly vanilla, again that hairy note is very light
    • Taste
full, round, oily, powerful with a thump
Sulfur and rotten eggs become stronger, spicy / tart, oak, slightly nutty

with water: bitter berry mix, slightly less sulfur, vanilla,
    • Finish
      medium to long
rotten eggs / sulfur, tart !!!, bitter

with water: rubber, paper / cardboard, coffee powder (burnt?), rotten eggs will get stronger

Astringent on the cheek and gums

Nice ripening, that's how it has to be. It takes time to really open up. And sherry maturation doesn't have to look like cola.
A good one, but not an outstanding one (such as the OA 1988/2011) Rothes.

Not a dark sherry bomb, but also with nice fruity notes. Likes it better in the nose because it is too hot in the mouth, even if it is thinned. More like an old single grain.
    • Nose
Nice and sweet and flowery-musty, light, slightly tropical fruits with honey, some mineral notes of grain, oak
    • Taste
Light fruity, strong and spicy, dryness with a bit pungent sharpness, sweet
    • Finish
Dry with spice, fruit sweetness and oak

  10. Issie did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    • Nose
Musty, earthy, light sulfur, herbs, cress on cotton wool, dark dried fruits, blackberries and somewhere a little sweet comes from, but I don't know exactly where from, red wine gum, honey, a little lemon, almonds and other nuts
After the first sip, it is clearly fruity on the nose and even a hint of coconut, coffee
    • Taste
Wildberry jam, blackberries, strawberries, lemon, nuts, light chocolate, coffee, wood, minimal pepper
