  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

It exceeded my expectations. A great sherry profile, which looks a little old school. The influence of European oak is clearly noticeable. A great bottling that breaks out of the mostly interchangeable modern sherry profile of many current whiskys.

It took a while for this dram to open up, maybe 30 min or so. A pleasant sherry on the nose and some highland park characters vaguely in the background. Taste was better, more complex and punch to it. Still a little one dimensional for me

  4. Jpspecial scored this whisky 91 points Member Senior

    Dark copper.
Very rich. Old leather and rich old tobacco. Some rancio. Morrello cherries. Dry earthy notes. Herbal anise. Some nougat.
Nice feel mouth feel. Little oily full and rich. More old leather and tobacco. Plum syrup. Maple syrup. And pepper.
This stuff is amazing. Love it.

A sureshot. The casks make it seem older than it actually is.
Only the spicy, fiery palate leaves me wanting a bit more balance.
The nose gets even better with a drop of water.

      High quality European-oak sherry casks...
    • Taste
      87 87
...which make this one turn pretty dark, herbal and spicy on the tongue...
    • Finish
      88 88
...but then give way to a deeply satisfying chocolate-and-coffee-laced finale with hints of heathery HP smoke.

An interesting, multifaceted malt, 48 alc is quite enough, only some acidity accompanies the malt in the taste and aftertaste.

Very characteristic heavy sherry, the combination of smoke and dark chocolate is very interesting
    • Nose
      85 85
candied fruit, toffee, a little salty, some smoky, a little spice, star anise
    • Taste
      87 87
The entrance is sweet, candied, salty and spice in the middle, star anise, cinnamon, smoky and strong, with some bitter bottom and a little sour at the end. The alcohol sense is well controlled, the wine is medium-bodied, and the oily sense is weak. When the cup wakes up, you can drink the taste of dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      86 86
Thick smoky, some dark chocolate, some spice, a touch of toffee on the back

My first ever Highland Park and straight away from an independent bottler! The color is amazingly dark and rich, it feels like liquid syrup:) I've been enjoying this bottle very much since the beginning and have about 30% left after 2 months since I opened it:)) I will definitely explore both the Highland Park and Elixir Distillers more after this experience!

Rich, sweet, but not very, alcohol is very well integrated, loads of dark canned fruits, fruit pie, dark cherry jam, maple sirup, liquorice and oak wood notes, old leather, wood polish, dusty warehouse, beautifully rounded and balanced
    • Taste

We all know which Orkney distillery this comes from. It feels like it has a sharp viking edge. Also quite amplified despite the ABV. I tend to get along with more tidier drams, but this is still great with nice complexity.
    • Nose
Fresh red berries, soft dry peat smoke, some blood oranges, faint cola
    • Taste
Sweet berry syrup, slightly malty, soft smoke, oily texture, slightly peppery & vegetal, some salinity, gets drier as it progresses, hint of cinnamon
    • Finish
Berries, tobacco leaves, blood oranges, black and red peppers, grapefruits, some salinity, fairly long, some residual sherry & smoke

  38. Simon Stood scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Interesting relatively young Highland Park (apparently). Comfortable 48% abv. The style of the distillery has been preserved. Perhaps a few more years in a barrel would improve the sample. 22/22/22/22

  39. olegborgol scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Such a well balanced HP. Berries, leather, chocolate, pepper, plum stones, wood-sherry notes with a light bitterness that does not interfere. The finish is quite long, pleasantly warming. All 22 from the sample.

The nose is very nice but hidden at first. Stewed fruits, leather, strawberry and plum preserves. In an empty glass, excellent and rich notes of dry sidal leather and thermowood.
Taste dry sweetness of brown sugar, hot spices, already burnt strawberry jam.
Finish with soft tannins, leather and baked wood.
Excellent whisky where everything is smooth and nothing sticks out .... Definitely HP

It’s good and dangerously drinkable. It loses a point on the finish, which is a bit one-dimensional. But all in all a very enjoyable whisky.
    • Nose
A whiff of smoke. A maritime smell, slightly minerally. Brine too. Quite some forest fruits, especially blueberries. Sweet strawberries too. Plums. Dark chocolate and a touch of maple syrup. Then tobacco. Red apples and a pinch of honey. Later also a touch of oak.
    • Taste
Blueberries again, strawberries and plums. Raisins. Honey. Dark chocolate and toffee. Maple syrup. Plenty of cinnamon and a hint of ginger. And some tobacco in the background.
    • Finish
Mid-long and slightly drying. cinnamon and raisins. A touch of oak and a balsamic note. Somewhat one-dimensional.

Less fruity, more tart, spicy and sweet.
I have never had such a pronounced tobacco note in any malt. Great substance, especially at the issue price.
    • Nose
      90 90
Ingenious color, only the viscosity reveals the young age.
Initially, I have a freshly opened packet of Van Nelle Halfzware Shag in my nose. Behind it maple syrup, roasted walnuts and slightly alcoholic piksen. Later leather and pickled plums.
    • Taste
      88 88
Nice oily start. Here, too, initially tart and spicy, then sweet.
With water, the tobacco note comes out more strongly here as well. In addition, leather and oak spice are added. I can actually find relatively little fruit.

I am impressed with the balance and integrity of the composition. No obsessive sherry motives, everything is very clearly woven into a single whole.
The taste is holistic, but slightly rough and quite simple, although a few drops of water smooth out the corners.

The smoky character of HP is a bit overwhelmed by the sherrycask, and as such not very recognizable anymore.
Still it is a nice whisky, quite some power but not too much, quite thick structure.
    • Nose
      86 86
Red fruits, plums, quite some alcohol, a whiff of smoke on the background. After some time the nose gets friendlier, the smoky part has disappeared.

A batch of three ex-sherry butts from a "secret" distillery in the Orkney Islands was used to make this single malt, distilled in 2007 and aged for over 13 years. This is an earthy and juicy whisky infused with smooth smoke and a hint of spice.
    • Nose
Cedarwood and homemade strawberry and vanilla jam combine with smoked chimney cake and chocolate covered raisins. Freshly cut wood gives an earthy sweetness to the aroma.
    • Taste
Sticky honey is drizzled with sherry trifle, then refreshing cranberry juice and dripping strawberry fondant come to the fore. A little bit of clove is mixed with a toffee of cake.
    • Finish
Orange peel and licorice root appear towards the end, along with a viscous sweetness. Smooth yet spicy chocolate with 50% cocoa and chili leaves a lasting impression.

That there is nothing like that nowadays at an issue price below 70 € !? Great! I like it very much. Above all, I am enthusiastic about the exit, because otherwise I always have the least fun here.
    • Nose
      86 86
Very heavy, sweet nose. Hardly any alcohol. The whole thing is somehow almost in the direction of port wine. Somewhat musty, dull barrel swings and now there is clearly menthol that cools the nose and something alcoholic stinging.
When you are through there you will be rewarded with fresh red fruits. Strawberries, black currants, blackberries and some unripe green fruits are also included.
I like it very much, if not great.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very soft start, but not lacking in strength. A lot of spice on the tongue. Here the fruitiness is first covered. The whole thing ends in oak freight that tingles on the tongue. Then the fruits come back. But now they are all ripe and are lying in a slightly damp cellar. A beautiful, unobtrusive sweetness spreads. The tannins become less with a little water and the malt becomes very pleasant to drink. That's fun
    • Finish
      90 90
Finally a malt again with a wonderfully fruity finish and not only carried by the spice and bitterness, but by your own body. Very tasty and especially the fruits can be rediscovered from the nose

Full and generous. Behind the mild peat smoke, the honey and chocolate from the nose greets the palate. Various spices come to the front now: cloves, ginger and white pepper. After a while a suprising note of mineral water pops up.

It's creamier now with the same spiceness. The Toblerone returns again, and the mineral water develops into a more maritme saltiness. Mild dry peat lingers.

  69. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

I was looking forward to tasting this dram! It came up with insanely high scores and became quite a hype, resulting in selling out with warp speed in Dutch shops. But are these high scores justified or just hyped by a group of newbies, insinuating a quality that isn’t there? Time to give it a try!
    • Nose
Oh this is a beautiful nose! To be honest I did not expect that. A tremendously deep and rich nose, greatly balanced! There is a lot of freshness going on here! Also it’s smokey, not peaty. Floral, buttery, sweet and savory. Cut flowers, dandelion, dried paprika powder. Also some hints of coastal flavors and nuttiness in like almond and hazelnut. I like this a lot!
    • Taste
Incredibly smooth and balanced! Creamy and almost silky. Orange fruits, peel, sour apples, brown sugar, unripe plumbs and a dry nuttiness. I also get something sweet/fresh/light bitter I associate with something tropical like melons. Quite a chili punch on the palate after a while. Again very pleasant. Well layered.
    • Finish
In the long lasting finish I get a certain amount of spices. Various Arabic spices like cinnamon, five spice and piment. After a while more sweet flavors pop up, giving raisins, brown sugar, cocoa, and ahorn syrup.

All together, for me personally, this really adds up and I find this a stunner!

Nose: Sweet Maple Syrup plums, Dark chocolate, Berries a potpourri (Rote Grütze here in Germany) pipe tobacco , earthy/ laethery notes on, Muskat/Piment slight vanilla

T/D: great texture. starts Sweet let's stick to maple syrup and plums :) heavy dark chocolate notes take over... wood berries more sour than expected.. Piment

F: Oak/ heavy tannins, dark chocolate, and Piment maybe even pepper but it's mixed with the cacao (medium)

Damn thats sweet and spicy...nice HP I agree that this would have been ridiculous good bottled at cask strength - but 40 % of us wouldn't have the chance to get hands on a bottle that way so fair deal and still a very good dram.

    https://www.whiskynotes.be/2020/linkwood/single-malts-of-scotland-reserve-casks-parcel-no-4/

Orkney Malt 13 yo 2007 (48%, Single Malts of Scotland ‘Reserve Casks’ 2020, Parcel No.4, 3 sherry butts)

Nose: plenty of plummy notes, dried figs, hints of strawberry jam as well as overripe banana and hints of gingerbread with honey. Hints of vanilla pastry. Not as sticky sweet as I expected, there’s a nicely dry, rancio side as well. Leafy notes, old ropes, damp tobacco. A lovely profile.

Mouth: the drier kind again. Old leather, dark chocolate, some beefy notes, five spice and liquorice. Plenty of umami elements, with black fruits and strawberry ganache playing the second violin. Spiced tea. Cinnamon powder. Some herbal drops. Not much peat.

Finish: long, earthy and chocolatey, with herbs.

Great stuff, rather old-school, probably characterised by European oak. It may have been stellar at cask strength, but it’s balanced and drinkable as it is. Warmly recommended, don’t hesitate if you find a bottle.
