A small batch bottling of three sherry butts from a secret Speyside distillery. (Macallan) Distilled in 2010 and aged for ten years until 2020 before Elixir Distillers chose to bottle this package of barrels at 48%.
    • Nose
Rum and raisin ice cream, served with pecan pie and crisp caramel. Aromas of caramelized plums and freshly baked red currant scones mingle with the freshness of crunchy paper.
    • Taste
Clove and mince pies, with a dusting of icing sugar, greet us in the mouth. Boiled fruitcake drizzled with acacia honey fills the senses. This is then accompanied by dried cranberries and licorice and mint tea.
    • Finish
: Warming and sweet intense: allspice, agave syrup and dates. Echoes of velvet falernum and almond extract rest in the back of the palate.

A textbook example of a beatifully made Macallan sherry whisky. Dates, figs, milk chocolate, raspberries, cherries, oranges, orange peel, walnuts (mostly on the finish) with a significant spicy touch. Think black pepper and ginger. All woking in perfect harmony. On the top of my head I cannot remember a single whisky having such a good balance. A masterpiece in that aspect! The only reason I do not rate this whisky even higher is that it starts falling apart once you add water to it. But why would you? :)

Tasted blind from a freshly cracked bottle: Red and purple berries, vanilla ice cream, root beer, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, celery. It tastes like bourbon, sherry, and port (leading) casks. Tasty stuff. A high 88 - I could see this opening up and getting even better.

Macallan? Uncertain but it could be. What is certain, is that it's sherry heavy and it's the same kind present in the 2007 Orkney (WBID 169415) where it does a great job. I can't fully explain why but it doesn't click with me in this one. Too oaky and one-dimensional on the palate where the sherry seems to be smacked upon the malt. The nose is great though. Good drinker yet a hard one to get lost in. The nose is okay and the price surely is (was) too.

    • Nose
Old sherry for a young-ish whisky. Dark red fruit, leather, polish, raisins, mild cedar, plums, a funky and herbal note.
    • Taste
Heavy, sweet arrival. Dark honey, dark rum, sherry, grape, xmas spice, tobacco. Some aspects are sweet, some are spice, some are rich, and some are a bit flat. But nice palate overall.
    • Finish
Long and dry, with pepper, red fruit, rum, oak, and some bitterness.

It’s heavy handed with sherry, simple and direct with its approach. I ended up blending with mine with some others as it just became a bit one dimensional for me.

    • Taste

An excellent sherry whisky at first, the aroma is simply magnificent, perhaps I have never seen such thick creamy notes, even scoop from the air with a spoon; the taste/finish is slightly behind, but just a little bit, it would seem - ideal, but, alas, there is a fly in the ointment in this barrel of honey - dust and cardboard in development very much begin to stick out in all components and quite spoil the overall picture.
    • Nose
      Restrained, dry, old leather goods, old furniture, varnish, roasted nuts, dense creamy tones - baked milk, salted caramel, boiled condensed milk; dead leaves, herbarium, cigar box, light mineral-industrial shades, cappuccino, confectionery notes - baklava, eclairs with custard; antique motifs - old books, dusty shelves; in the development of cardboard, cardboard, cardboard;
    • Taste
      Dense, rich, raisin, dusty antique tones, old furniture, old leather goods, thick creamy tones, earthy notes, stout, burnt caramel, light mineral-industrial motifs, pipe tobacco, roasted nuts, baklava and dust and cardboard again in development;
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, oak, furniture lacquer, old leather goods, plum notes, mulled wine, coffee, raisins, burnt caramel, stout notes and ... yes, dust and cardboard.

When I opened this Macallan (?) bottle and poured the first dram, I agreed with myself that this must be the most "closed" dram I ever tasted. I left it in the glass for nearly an hour but not much changed. Then I decided to keep the bottle opened for several hours. This changed things for the better. Now 3 drams later I dare to write a review.

So; after hours of air and hand-warming this whisky reveals a thick dirty sherry nose full of currants, raisins, dried dark fruit such as plums, blackberries, raspberries and prunes.
    • Taste
      87 87
Whisky sticking to the side of the glass indicates an oily structure. Dried dark fruit is now accompanied by oaky flavors, mild peppery spices, some tobacco and dark chocolate. Quite a wide pallet and variety of flavors.
    • Finish

Served me by Slàinte Mhath as a blind challenge.
And boy did I struggle to identify it.
Why? Because I've more or less given up on Macallan.
I still can't believe it is.
    • Nose

This must have been some exceptional casks.
By colour and the nose I was sure this had to be 18 if not 20 years plus.
      Very nice mature wood notes.
Prunes, glazed cherries. Also some cinnamon pastries.
Water brings forth more sugary sweetness, peaches, pears and a hint of smoke.
    • Taste
      89 89
Good follow up from the nose.
ABV at 48% make it firm and warm without being hot.
Starts sweet with dark red fruits. Wood takes more over from midway, but I don't mind, it's good wood :-)
Water brings everything down a notch, not so much spice and warmth.
Makes it more of a carefree sipper. Very easy drinkable.
    • Finish
      87 87
      A bit past medium length.
      Spicy warm.
Wood notes becomes a tad sour with some astringency.
Here as well with water the spice and warmth is reduced, but fortunately so is the sour and astringent.
It doesn't take much, but I like it better with a few drops.

    Quick hit review.

The best Macallans are probably the ones where the distillery is not even mentioned on the label. On the nose, rich and nutty sherry notes are setting the tone, and there is quite a lot of wood. Raisins, figs and emerging oak spices dominate the palate, followed by raspberries, ginger and mint. Red currants, walnuts and dried herbs linger in the peppery finish. At last a Macallan which is good value for money!

Nice sherry malt. Nose and palate are really good, the finish drops off a bit and looks a bit thin with the whole variety of flavors at the beginning.
    • Nose
      87 87
A soft start, some wax, coffee, some roasted aromas, dark berries, plum jam, some orange peel bring dark and deep impressions with them.
There are also a few fresh wood aromas and tobacco. In the background, very light Maggiekraut, dark gravy and roasted almonds / nuts.
      Great versatile nose! Fits…
    • Taste

I initially tasted the malt blindly and, despite all the barrel-heaviness, heard a note of orange, so I guessed it was Macallan. When I see the executions here, I don't seem entirely wrong. You can make relatively young dark malts like many recent SV bottlings - no matter which distillery, everything tastes the same. Or you can do it like Elixir Distillers and leave room for the distillate. Just like here.
Either way, this one is very tasty and, for me, has an excellent PLV.

    Easter Elchies

Elixir Distillers is the name of the company under which Sukhinder Singh of The Whisky Exchange itself bottles malts. Last year this 'A Speyside Distillery' appeared on the market, in which the origin of the malt is jealously kept secret. It turns out to be a vatting of three barrels.

Deliciously sweet nose on raisins, candied plums, pecans, red berry jam and apricot pastry. I am teleported to Easter Elchies.

That is perfectly continued on the palate, but with a good spiciness in the mix. Think black pepper, mint, cloves and cinnamon. Licorice, too. The fruit evolves from plums to rather fresh red fruits such as berries and strawberries and then returns to acacia honey and salted caramel. Delicious! And yes, I'm still at the same destination.

Nice and long, warm, spicy and dark sweet finish.

If that's not Macallan, then I will eat my socks. Thanks to Tom from Buds & Barrels for the sample.

Definitely punches above the 48% abv. Sweetness and confectionery on the nose. On the palette I get a big,,bold youthful sherry heading into the strong red fruits territory. Supposedly a Macallan, however I’m not drinking this thinking that their distillery imprint is all over this one. Doesn’t matter much though as it is an enjoyable sipper.

From the whisky exchange product page:

A 10-year-old Speyside single malt from Elixir distillers, made at a mystery distillery and matured in just three sherry butts before being bottled in 2020 as part of its Reserve Cask series. Aromas of raisins, ice cream, caramelised plums, freshly-baked scones and redcurrants fill the nose, complemented by notes of fruitcake, cloves, mince pies, honey and liquorice throughout the palate.

What can I say ... I don't know if it's a Macallan. Actually, it doesn't matter. Because it's just delicious and that's definitely a category that always works.
For my taste, a clear candidate for purchase. If you have a short finish, you can immediately remedy the situation if you drink quickly. : D

Uiihh ... it starts nicely. A sweet note of wax greets me first. Also a flag of smoke. Sugared raisins, dates and hints of vineyard peach. A bit of furniture polish and damp wood. Herbs are at the start, but are currently subject to the sweetness. The longer I smell it, the more cinnamon comes through. Partly like Big Red chewing gum. I'll leave it ...
With a little time in the glass, some fresh leather will open up. Sour cherries and chocolate. The colleague smells sour now, from the fruit. Blackberries. With candied orange slices and some aniseed.
      I like it very much.

Oily, spicy start. A little bit of chilli heat and that spark of smoke again. Tastes very thick, meaty. Waxed leather and some olive oil. A mineral taste joins it and brings a slight dryness with it. That dry touch always reminds me
strong on tea. In this case, blackberry - cherry. With the second sip, the cinnamon comes back. In connection with gingerbread spice. Now also more in the direction of plum and yeast dough. This wax aroma remains subtle, always with it.
      Delicious part.
    • Finish
Rather short. But nice and creamy with a subtle bitterness. Before it ends syrupy and sweet. This flag of smoke lingers at the very end, very pleasantly in the mouth.

Good sherry whisky, nice nose, then round and spicy in the mouth, the finish is unfortunately a bit thin.
    • Nose
strong sherry, dark fruity, spicy, Maggi cabbage, root vegetables, somehow hearty meaty.
    • Taste
In the mouth sherry spice and oak, some pepper, nice and full, the fruity and meaty aroma.
    • Finish
The finish is rather short on tart oak and sherry.

A whisky that you can drink well, but that doesn't really stand out either. Good to drink "alongside".

Bought this off the back of previous Whiskybase reviews. Sadly left wondering what all the excitement is about.

I'm sorry but this is not excellent whisky, it's a push to even call it good whisky.

Oak oak oak and not much else - I struggle to believe this is even sherry wood. Noting that the label never mentions wood type, I'm left suspecting this is something aggressive like STR's. Lots of colour, lots of oak, a bit of vanilla and chocolate, not much else.

What distillery is it? Who knows, the astringent oak masks it.

    Poor show.

Bottled by Elixir Distillers who also own The Whisky Exchange
and they list the bottle for sale under Macallan so little doubt where this comes from.

Nose: Starts sweet, honey, raisins, crème brulle , sweet fruits strawberry, ( after the first sip I had some cherry in the nose) raspberry...some eucalyptus/menthol

T/D/ great consistency ...starts sweet again, sweet cherry ,crème brulle again (mix of burnt caramel, vanilla and cream), some other fruit I cannot define atm fresh banana maybe...then the oak pops in (definitely European) gingery, pepper, Kakao.. fruits coming back slight sour fruits now ...

F: getting dryer..Oak, Kakao, almonds, ginger/pepper, menthol ..medium to long

A nice IB Mac...ok you don't know for sure but the profile fits and it definitly resembles the 'Ruby' (last Mac I had recently) just not so settled and intense on the dark cherry side / definitely more intense in the oak notes on the palate . My guess would be that these stronger oak notes are the reason for Edrington to sell these Mac** or whatever casks - good for us ;) ... Overall still round and balanced nice cask selection no matter what it is...Takes some drops of water / brings out some nuttiness and overall more sour profile.
