A very enjoyable Bunnahabhain which needs a little time but then it starts to open up rather nicely.

Peat. A smouldering bonfire. Seaweed and oddly enough nettles. Apricots. Also green apples and acacia honey. A hint of iodine.
    • Taste
      88 88
A lovely oily mouthfeel. Peat, some ash and smoked ham. The nettles are back. Vanilla and honey. Gooseberries in the background. And there is some white pepper too.
    • Finish
      87 87
Mid-long, mostly with peat, apricot and spices.

Fairly peated and discreet smoke. Fruity by the sherry finish. Very pleasant aromas after a while.....
    • Taste

Hot and peppery. The peat comes through better and also the fruity notes with a nutty background. A little oil flavor remains on the tongue.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium finish with a very warm feeling.

Damp but fresh, sweet and also bitter, sour and fresh. The highlight for me was the roasty notes along with some tobacco leaves on the palate throughout the finish. While the finish is not short as peated malts often go, I just wish the finish was longer. A bit nippy as well if I have to say.
    • Nose
Damp peat smoke, grilled oranges, red berries, tart stonefruits, coastal, seaweeds
    • Taste
Peaches, tobacco, burnt sugar, creamy texture, caramel, damp wood
    • Finish
Roasty, burnt rice, slight brine, toasted marshmallows, long

    Pig on a Spit

And while we are at it… might as well continue with The Whisky Jury’s new releases. For next to his latest excellent Ledaig 2010 on oloroso, he also released this 13 years old Bunnahabhain, also from an oloroso cask. It’s a Staoisha, meaning peaty Bunna.

Oh, my! Wonderfully greasy and surprisingly sweet nose on earth, nettles and even a bicycle tire, but also apricot marmalade, quince and Granny Smith. It even turns a bit candy-like and it works. There is even a slight metallic hint and some pencil shavings in the backgroun giving it some luster.

Oily and mouth coating. Fish oil and pig on a spit mixed with orange juice! Grand smokiness, big peppery note, ashes and peat, vanilla… the works! This is becoming quite the party. The spiciness increases while the smoke decreases and the extra sweet notes vye for your attention. Good balance, good strength.

The finish is long, starts sweet and end… even more sweet. The smoke slowly fades and puts a smile on my face.

Peat and sherry… I’ve often said that I don’t always find it an easy combination, but I think it’s time to update that quote. It has become, to me, a combo that hardly goes wrong.
