As the oak spice arrives and leaves again it feels a bit underpowered at 43%, but still enjoyable sherry style whisky.
    • Nose
      87 87
Gentle on the nose, dried fruits, apricots, older musty wood, orange, black/blue berry combination, red apple, cinnamon, vanilla, tobacco, bit of caramel, slight hint of milk but very slight, sulfur every now and then in the background.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, apple, tart, caramel, nutty sherry notes, oak spice.
    • Finish
      86 86
dry, tart, nutty with a bit of fruit and oak spice. hint of sulfur.

An 18-year-old Glengoyne who comes in a giant box that Ralfy has smacked the distillery (figuratively...) in the face for wasting resources and money. Money that would have been better invested in a stronger bottling, because 43% vol. are very thin for a bottling that will cost over €120 in most shops in mid-2022. The whisky has a healthy golden colour. Let's see if it has qualities that justify the price.

    • Nose
In terms of smell, it initially has qualities that distinguish it as a good whisky. But it is primarily the aromas that I initially associate with a bourbon barrel. There is a fruity vanilla with yellow plums and ripe pears, only in the background there is a marzipan note that could come from the Oloroso.
    • Taste
The taste is also a rich plum juice, which dominates the aromas with an interplay of sweet and sour. Pleasant with light alcohol and some dry bitterness at the end. That's good - but it's not exceptional, and it's not old either. Overall, the flavors are too thin and don't reach the depth to be expected from an 18 year old.
    • Finish
Some marzipan remains with good will along with residual sweetness from the plums and a slight bitterness. That's not enough for a lasting impression.

The problem with current whiskys like this is the expectation raised by the asking prices. This whisky doesn't fulfill them. It's too thin, the Oloroso cask didn't make enough of an impression. It's tasty and drinks nice. But for €120 I don't want a nice whisky - I want an exceptionally aged whisky that makes an impression. This whisky doesn't do that. There's no reason to buy it, it's overblown and overpriced - an unsympathetic whisky.

Vanilla, grass, fresh fruit, mint, honey, apples, some toffee and nuts, and lightly chocolate
    • Taste
      86 86
a little oily, fruity, delicate spiciness of ginger, fresh, sweet, vanilla, citrus
    • Finish

      medium, sweet, wood, nuts, vanilla

  9. RJKrueger scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A very well balanced, smooth malt. According to distillery information, made from 35% first fill sherry casks made from European oak and 15% from American oak, 50% refill casks without further details.
    • Nose
      88 88
Fruity, sweet and spicy with balanced notes of sherry; ripe apples, red berries, vanilla, marzipan and nuts.
    • Taste
      87 87
The nose continues in the taste, with a little more spice and sherry notes. The 43% alcohol isn't bad, but 46% would give it a little more power.
    • Finish
      86 86
Beautiful, round, harmonious finish that you can trace for a long time, even if a little more intensity would be nice

    1706) Glengoyne, 18YO (2020)
    • Nose
N- Remarkably different than the older batch, probably more bourbon cask DNA in this one, personally I think it helps to elevate the bright fruity side of Glengoyne and not overrun by the oak. Dried fruit infused vanilla, elegantly floral with cooked oat fragrant. (87/21)
    • Taste
P- Oily feel with spicy custard and spices, butterscotch and drifting sherry notes. (86/20)
    • Finish
F- Long but narrow, mandarin peels and charred woody dry, (86/20)

      B/B- 86/20

A fine whisky with good balance and great fruit notes. Underpowered at 43%. I won’t be buying a full bottle as There’s plenty of whiskies at half the price delivering a more exciting experience.
    • Nose
      86 86
clean, soft, very elegant. Spirit is in balance with the cask. Fruity, dried fruit, spicy. Pear, orange, apple, pineapple, plums, apricots. Hints of dark berries. Vanilla, raisin, hazelnut. Dry cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Honey. I really love the fruit notes of this one, great balance. Sadly, you occasionally get a whiff of sulphur as well.
    • Taste
      85 85
again soft, fairly viscous. Fresh with orange, pear and currant notes right away. Soft apricot. Cinnamon, nutmeg mix with nice maltiness and creamy fudge. Some honey as well.
    • Finish
      86 86
medium, with chocolate, nuts and berries. Honeyed. A bit of sulphur again.

Beautifully balanced malt with a harmonious, subtle sherry influence. Very drinkable without lacking tension. The spicy oak gives it the necessary strength despite the 43%. Up to around 80 euros (as of 2021) would be fine for me for a bottle.
    • Nose
      87 87
Sweet; slightly malty-grainy; beautiful ripe fruits; ripe apples; fine sherry notes; Caramel; delicate wood seasoning; delicious, fruity balanced nose
    • Taste
      88 88
soft and full-bodied; again the beautiful ripe fruits; ripe apples; Notes of dark chocolate; Walnuts; Over time there is a nice tart, tingling wood spice which gives the malt the necessary strength despite the 43%; like everything nicely balanced in the nose
    • Finish
      87 87
becoming dry; the fruits are still discreetly there; some dark chocolate; tender, tangy, spicy wood remains

Thanks to chrisyeo for the sample.
    • Nose
      86 86
Strong sherry notes initially, then it faded into more dark chocolate and slightly grassy. Kind of fruity and minty as well. A little bit of acidic notes, slightly sour, and vanilla.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet and sour, some nice vanilla, kind of acidic with that sharp citrusy.
    • Finish
      83 83
Nutty, sourish, vanilla, medium long finish.

    • Nose
      88 88
Great ripe apples, spicy old sherry, caramel, some vanilla cream, fresh tobacco, lots of chocolate, some sawdust. Slightly boiled down fruits, somewhat musty woodworking, mocha, with light citrus notes, candy apple and dry-sweet wood (liquorice?).

An unbelievably good balance of tart-spicy 'old' sherry notes and fruity-fresh aromas, as well as a great wood influence.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pleasantly spicy, juicy ripe apple (green and red), light citrus notes, tart, dry chocolate, spices. The spicy 'old' sherry notes appear again. The wood is noticeable through delicately spicy and slightly tart notes. Tart lemon peel, delicately musty.

Here too: dignified and very well balanced.
    • Finish
      87 87
Somewhat dry, steeply flattened, quite tart. The fruity notes evaporate quickly, leaving a delicate, tart wood note with just a hint of unripe fruit.
