Tasted blind, it goes straight through as a younger single pot still, you don't notice its 14 years in any way.
Tasted as part of a blind tasting, in which Julia Nourney, who takes care of the blending at Connacht, also took part. She, too, saw this whisky more on the young side. :-)
    • Nose

Very spicy, dried fruit, reminiscent of a single pot still. Tarragon, marjoram, savory, with cold coffee, nougat.
    • Taste

Very spicy and dry, dried fruits, red currants. espresso, dark chocolate
    • Finish

Medium length, spicy, slightly dry. Hardly any further differentiated aromas.

Now I know again why I don't like these Marsala finishes so much. All too cute. Artificial and it all looks very much. At least in the nose, the sweetness covers a lot here. Maybe that works better with some other malts, but for me it doesn't work that way.
The palate and finish form a coherent and acceptable conclusion.

The first impression is accompanied by a slight alcoholic stinging. Lots of artificial-looking sweetness. Light fruit, mandarins, pears, lemon. It is also floral with cereal flavors.
Malt, some caramelized popcorn, just a hint of vanilla in the background.
    • Taste
      81 81
After an initially pleasant mouthfeel with a light spice and a little pepper, this sweetness comes through again suddenly. But not as extremely sweet as on the nose. Fruitiness is given a little more, mandarins, apples, pears. In addition vanilla, malt,

Short finish, a bit drier and slightly bitter. Now more malty-sweet.

On sale for EUR 55. Great whiskey to get at this price. Aged 10 years in first fill bourbon the 2 years in second fill bourbon and 2 years in marsala

Spade and Bushel is a limited bottling from Connacht Distillery. The whiskey initially matured in an American bourbon barrel for 12 years after being given a Marsala finish for 2 years. Connacht's barrels have been carefully selected to match the amarone notes with the fruity notes of the Spade & Bushel single malt. This complex whiskey brings a great mouthfeel and plays with the typically sweet malt notes of the Spade & Bushel single malt.

The whiskey was bottled at 45% and is not colored. It is a special bottling of 2100 bottles worldwide. Each bottle is individually numbered.
