Let's go back to the other side of the world, to King Car distillery and their Port-finished NAS whisky 'Kavalan Concertmaster'. Nosing this Taiwanese Single Malt is quite pleasant, despite the intense sweetness and spirity youthfulness. Tropical fruits, icing sugar and a touch of menthol blend nicely with honey, nuts and raisins. With only 40% ABV, the taste is rather thin, sweet and slightly sour, featuring berries, roasted coffee and a dash of pepper in its brief finish. Again, a very 'engineered' and certainly overpriced malt that didn't blow my socks off.

    Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish NAS | 40% | 21 + 20 + 21 + 19 = 81pts
N: The blurred influence of a barrel from under the port, meets blackberries, escorts currants, then more familiar candy caramel stories.
T: Some berries, port profile, vanilla, compote.
F: Dry, short, empty, some sweet spices and wine notes.
B: Curved work with a barrel of port wine, you can drink, but not the fact that you need.

[February, 2018]  Somehow I have to do a more detailed review of this bottling as I do not remember its taste at all.  Is this good or bad?  We will see...  This dram is from another bottle that was filled on December 12th, 2012.

The colour is burnished and the texture shows a fat sticky ring that builds tears with medium fast legs.  The nose is somewhat unbalanced with a spike on the sweet-sour port wine aromas but not much malt influence.  It reads a little immature I would say.  It is okay but nothing I really like to nose.  The whisky arrives warming but not coating on the palate and has significant dry-adstringent moments that I do not like (tannins, cold metals and ashes).  The taste is just two-dimensional on sour-sweet port wine flavours with some bitter wooden notes.  Okayish but not my style.  The finish is of medium length and sweeter than the taste but it shows more of the drying and bitter moments.  Water smoothes the dram and reduces the bitterness somewhat while increasing the dryness and adstringent feelings.  Not sure what is better.

Yes, this dram is drinkable, of course - but why should I?

First, that bottle ... as if you bought a cough drink from North Korea. Looks very ehm .... not pretty ;-).
is separate if you taste it after you have tasted a peated whisky, it comes across as a kind of non-alcoholic liqueur. or: lemonade syrup. very strange

sweet, hard to discover and fathom. the color betrays the port. afterwards the scent comes loose as a kind of chewable winegum. haribo cherries
    • Taste
      80 80
sweet port, but paper thin. little depth. Haribo cherries return.

finish? which finish? the taste disappears when you swallow it. once, but never again. sorry kavalan

Conclusion: Ok, does not hurt, but also without a special touch, altogether a bit too young, even if he does not seem sprittig, mauch the finish is too short to leave an impression
    Filling of 2017
    • Nose
      79 79
the first nose is quite thin at 40%, port / red wines with strawberry and other red berries, the sweetness has a berry touch, but also goes towards sugar, some spices and marzipan
    • Taste
      78 78
again very thin, marzipan and red fruits, light sweetness with pleasant oak notes, but also a slight sour impact, in the background a little soap
    • Finish
      76 76
short, almonds, strawberries, vanilla, some spicy oak, without bitter aromas

[May, 2016]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle with bottling stamp 21.12.2012 that I bought for 57 Euro in June, 2015.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5.  My notes state the port is not very well integrated and the dram somewhat unbalanced.

    • Nose
Very unusual in the nose - it smells sweet, caramel and marzipan. Almost like a bourbon, corn and fine cask notes.
In the taste rather spicy. Tart herbs, liquorice, but also some vanilla. Wish he was a bit stronger. But the effect is balanced, soft, tasty.
      Short finish. Spicy and sweet.
Out of the ordinary. But good!
