Sinterklaas had only just returned to Spain when a nice little box was dropped off at our house. Delivered by importer The Nectar wish a lovely Christmas card by Shilton Almeida, the crazy-but-irresistably-funny brand ambassador for Paul John, the Indian single malt. I had tried their 2018 Christmas Edition and loved it to bits. The new release matured on a combination of ex-bourbon, oloroso and virgin oak casks.
The nose is umami and sweet at the same time, as well as exotically (is that a word?) spiced. Roast beef, raisins, sugar cane, pineapple on the barbecue, overripe banana, nuts and candied oranges. After some breathing, the umami traits make room for more wonderfully sweet aromas. The spices on duty are cinnamon and cloves. Evolves towards glühwein, which is obviously perfect for this expression.
Ho, ho, ho! On the palate this is quite powerful and spicy indeed. The virgin oak puts its foot down. All kinds of hefty wood spices, allowing the whisky to warm your mouth. Once it has settled on your palate, the sweetness returns in full force. Oranges, candied lemon, banana, pineapple and even some mango are neatly gift-wrapped in cardamom, cloves and paprika powder. Nicely oily, mouth coating and very good!
The aftertaste is shorter than hoped for, but still medium long. The spiciness fades gently, making this a silky soft ending.
A true Christmas whisky, believe me. And not even 60 EUR? In that case, I’ll take two.
