Exotic fruits, banana, blood orange, chocolate, slightly smoky, tart

  2. WhiskeyMavens scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

It stands out in comparison to Paul John's earlier Christmas offerings. Apart from the smokiness, the honeyed sweetness comes through strongly from the first to the final sip. Additionally, it has a mild heat without being overpowering.

Overall, it is a very delightful and fitting dram for a cozy winter holiday.

My first Paul John, and he can convince with the interesting variety of aromas. However, I have absolutely no associations with Christmas when I drink it.

Behind him, I made a judgment, I tried this whisky several times.
And that was the right decision, because if I had to do it after the first time I would have to be very rough with her and the grade would be below the level she is actually at.
After my first encounter with this dram, I was deeply disappointed. I was expecting something more after the Christmas edition. I saw practically nothing in it, except for strong pepper, bitterness and decayed oak wood.
I put it aside for two days, and after them .... shock! As if someone had poured the contents of a bottle and refilled the bottle with a completely different drink. Sweetness, fruity, peppery that is no longer all that intriguing. Even rotten oak began to take on the aftertaste of freshly polished noble oak. Each sip only convinced me more and more that .... Each of us can be wrong. And most importantly, I noticed my mistake and tried to correct it and assess it properly.

Great and lovely sugar water wauw with a punch! Great nose and a very decent taste. Finish is rather short. But wauw, love it!

Very special nose with a bunch of different things like nutmeg, yeast, hint of hay, sweets, but there is something distinct too like an old stable or animal-house. Bit weird but I'm totally loving the nose :-)

Wauw! Sweets, sugar, sherry, apples / pear and even a speck of turf. Wood and even a hint of lemon. Yellow paprika at the back of the mouth. This is crazy. This is sweet. This is very well puzzled together. The combo is elegant and well balanced. Delicious!

Short and sandy but nice. Not really mature, but it’s ok. Hint of spices and off course some Christmas-cake… I really hoped that the finish would last longer... That it would slowly die out. But nothing like it unfortunately.

Milk chocolate, raisins, figs, plums, dates, cardamom, cinnamon, red chilli powder, sandalwood, oranges, apples. Some savoury and nutty notes in there too, along with a touch of peat. More milk chocolate on the finish. A few drops of water recommended. The only slight negative is that he nose has a distinct note of a recently emptied medicine tablet bottle which I don't particularly enjoy. Overall though, it is rich, complex and very tasty.

Aroma is a nice diverse rollout that’s more subtle than previous years – you need to take your time with it and let the candy, malty, wine and smoky notes pass to findthe apple notes below; Palate is interesting and unique in its totality and I can’t quite place it but it’s like Honey Nut Cheerios by a fire with some olde tyme candy dots and just a touch metallic; Finish is a muted velvety version of the palate.

There's a bit of everything in here! Nicely balanced sherry and bourbon notes both shine through, accompanied with a nicely dosed amount of smoke.

Nose is on the fresher side compared to most sherried whiskies. Apple cake, maple syrup, sour candy, caramelized sugar and spiced glühwein.
    • Taste
      85 85
Smoked virgin oak wood. Lots of spice and wood notes at first. Later on the sweet fruitiness returns.
    • Finish
      83 83
Slightly scorched BBQ meat. Oregano, wine-y sherry notes right where you want them. Finish is on the shorter side but otherwise very nice.

The first single malt that really deserves the name "Christmas Malt"! Rich spices, very nice notes of chocolate and cinnamon combined with all kinds of orange notes make this single malt a wonderful Christmas drink.
Turn on the fireplace, let old Christmas music play and treat yourself to a glass of this whisky and Christmas will be an event even this year. Worth 89 points for me.

    Ho, Ho, Ho!

Sinterklaas had only just returned to Spain when a nice little box was dropped off at our house. Delivered by importer The Nectar wish a lovely Christmas card by Shilton Almeida, the crazy-but-irresistably-funny brand ambassador for Paul John, the Indian single malt. I had tried their 2018 Christmas Edition and loved it to bits. The new release matured on a combination of ex-bourbon, oloroso and virgin oak casks.

The nose is umami and sweet at the same time, as well as exotically (is that a word?) spiced. Roast beef, raisins, sugar cane, pineapple on the barbecue, overripe banana, nuts and candied oranges. After some breathing, the umami traits make room for more wonderfully sweet aromas. The spices on duty are cinnamon and cloves. Evolves towards glühwein, which is obviously perfect for this expression.

Ho, ho, ho! On the palate this is quite powerful and spicy indeed. The virgin oak puts its foot down. All kinds of hefty wood spices, allowing the whisky to warm your mouth. Once it has settled on your palate, the sweetness returns in full force. Oranges, candied lemon, banana, pineapple and even some mango are neatly gift-wrapped in cardamom, cloves and paprika powder. Nicely oily, mouth coating and very good!

The aftertaste is shorter than hoped for, but still medium long. The spiciness fades gently, making this a silky soft ending.

A true Christmas whisky, believe me. And not even 60 EUR? In that case, I’ll take two.
