I don't know if there was a massive difference between the 19' and 20' releases, but it seems like this is a 'love-it-orhate-it type of thing.
    • Nose
      89 89
Even if I am alone with my opinion I think the nose is particularly nice. Even though I see why some say it is artificial, or syrupy.

Intense. How I remember 'Allardice 18' from years back. (is it why experts and pros thought it is inferior? maybe...)

Syrupy raisins, prunes, figs, and medjool dates. Coconut flakes. Toffee. Bit of oak, molasses, vanilla, caramel. Cassia on dried fruits. Leather and muscovado. Cocoa dust.
    • Taste
      87 87
Initially sweet. Caramel then cinnamon, bit of peppery heat. Prunes. Coffee bitterness. Espresso bitterness or Macchiato with cocoa dust rather. Walnut.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium. Ends with a bit of maltiness.
      This is the only disappointment.

A good hand was definitely shown here with the barrel composition, which in my opinion does not change the fact that the basic brandy of this malt suffers from a certain lack of aroma and character. The whisky tastes good to me and invites you to sip it carefree, but somehow it seems to me like a delicious "convenience food" and makes me miss that certain something.
    • Nose
Clearly barrel-driven, quite fruity and a bit floral, black cherries, prunes, some orange, storage apples, dates and raisins sweeten the fruit ensemble, a few dried figs, behind them the slightly charred oak waits and sprinkles in spices, a pinch of allspice, a hint Cinnamon, mace, a reminiscence of kola nut, little leather abrasion and occasional crumbs of medium-strength tobacco, vanilla, all in all a very round and pleasing thing, but the distillate cannot hide its slightly alcoholic sterility when taking a deep breath
    • Taste
The oral cavity is quite sweet, black cherries and prunes are chewed together with a sip of cola into a homogeneous mush, dates, dried figs, burnt raisins on a crispy spiced fruit bread with dried apricots and dried apricots, floury apples, cinnamon, allspice and ground Coriander, the largely bitter-free oak loses a thin layer of charcoal, graphite dust, next to this dominant contribution from the barrels, the rather inconspicuous brandy doesn't stand a chance, but rolling around in the mouth for a long time shows its alcoholic side and is a little sharp over time Tongue
    • Finish
Medium length, vanilla, strong wood spice, some cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, a bit of tobacco and leather, becoming increasingly roasted with strong black coffee and dark chocolate, a few remains of dates and raisins, banana with forest honey, brown sugar, coming in the aftertaste next to the oak some storage apple and again that slight graphite note to the fore, as if I had sucked on a pencil lead

A good whisky - sherry/Olorosso expanded. Round, Alc.well integrated, pleasant sherry note, slightly warming finish

  5. 11insomnium scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

In comparison, it lags behind the Glendronach Boynsmill 16y, which appears more mature and shows more complex notes.
    • Nose
Some fruit with sweetness, mild and reserved, some floral and dark dried fruit with more time in the glass
    • Taste
Tart and spicy, fruity berries with sweetness, somewhat soapy, dry oak, slightly alcoholic tingling
    • Finish
Dark oak spice with fruit and mild, alcoholic notes

  6. Drum scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

The PX cannot be denied, a nice sweet whisky, but with masculine notes for me due to wood and tobacco. This one is to my liking!
    • Nose
A tart sweetness, dates and prunes, wood tobacco, PX sherry, sweet pastries and gravy of the sweet kind.
    • Taste
Sweet and tobacco-heavy, turnip greens and menthol notes. Very mild in the mouth again roast sauce with a slice of orange or maybe sauerbraten sauce with sultanas.
    • Finish
Oily, mild, warm and rich PX turnip sweetness, a bit sticky but nicely balanced with woody notes, tobacco and leather. Dark dried fruits float above everything.

Fruity, red berries, deerskin, citrus, vanilla, malt, sherry, discreet rubber gloves, a bit greasy, smoky, woody spice. Fairly balanced, tender, sweet, good body, little depth, medium intensity, piquant.

    nose:
on candied fruit, it's soft, sweet, syrupy, you want to prolong the nose
pleasant varnish afterwards, malt afterwards, fruits return to morello cherry, ripe quince, caramel
    mouth:
spices on white pepper, it stings; toasted sensation, on dry but tenacious sherry, the intense sensation of the cooked and syrupy fruit gradually fades, it is very delicious all the same, a little bitterness on the sweet almond, cocoa appears strong , the woody varnish at the end with the sweetness of caramel.
    final:
on candied fruits, leather, varnish, quite long, surprising finish which brings back to Cognac scents for candied fruit, oak and varnish, I love it.

    Fairly modern profile, very barrel-heavy.
    • Nose
      85 85
Very fruity on first contact with cherries, blackberries, black currants and grapes. Subtle mild spice, some wood and leather. Seems to me like he got a lot from the (sherry) barrel. After a while, some pine green and dry forest floor. Later on, the cherries prevail quite a bit, with the dark chocolate that is added now, it has something of Mon Chérie.
    • Taste
      84 84
Soft and initially very creamy appearance. Moist wood and the red fruits on the nose, with cherries again dominating here (next to blackberries). Gingerbread spice, cloves, allspice. Coffee with milk, toffee, caramel, forest honey. Not as sweet on the tongue as it appeared on the nose, the more intense spiciness ensures that. Some menthol.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-long and dry finish. Menthol remains, with the cherries still present there is now a little child em-eukal feeling. Toffee, dark chocolate, clove powder, nutmeg and damp wood.

    Notes from a blind tasting
    • Nose
Cherries, dark grapes and hops. Sultanas, walnuts, cloves and ginger. Slightly mineral - earthy notes, sawdust and hints of lime in the background, spruce needles and coffee.
    • Taste
Very soft mouthfeel, malty, sweet, red fruits. Spices ... lovage, nutmeg and chervil. Fudge, white coffee, cherries and heather honey. Slightly metallic.
    • Finish
Cherries, caramel, dark chocolate, cloves, nutmeg, freshly cut wood that is still damp

  15. Monte Gehro scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Pleasant modern sherry malt, balanced and very tasty.
    • Nose
      86 86
Gentle at first, takes time, then deep, dark sherry aromas develop. Raisins, prunes, nuts, also some dust and ripe apples.
    • Taste
      87 87
Mild, creamy, sweet, brown sugar, dark fruits, at the end there is still some spice to emerge. Rather short finish with sweet parts, tart spice at the end.
    • Finish
      85 85

  16. dRambo scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Very tasty, modern sherrymalt that has a slight influence on retro style - very nice, very smooth understatement, looks very well matured and round, significantly more than sufficiently complex for its price. (50-60 in 2021 is a steal)

For me as a nerd, he's too good, too perfect, too easy drinking for a higher rating. I can eat 10cl of the material in one evening and wonder where the experience was.

Beautiful, elegant sherry whisky at a reasonably appropriate price. Overall successful.
    • Nose
      86 86
Nice sherry aromas with dark fruits and wonderful aromas of red fruits.
    • Taste
      85 85
Lots of oak and sherry notes, with caramel and coffee.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium length with dark chocolate and light coffee notes, a nice bitterness comes through.
