Astonishing Laphroaig, probably the best expression I can recall ever tasting. Amazing balance through and through.

Light camphor, peat smoke, some lanolin, wet matches, mineral notes, granite, grapefruit, light acetone, vanilla. Very enjoyable.

Wow. Amazing right from the start. I think this is the best Laphroaig that I ever tasted. Really well made. Alcohol level is just perfect, it's warm, there's a bit of black pepper, but nothing is too much. Decent amount of sweetness against the smoke and camphor notes. It's fruity as well, and there are just tiny notes of oak against the barley. Second chew is really filling, the texture and structure of this dram is marvellous. More sweetness, a bit of ginger and minty stuff developing, more smoke, a little bit of grapefruit freshness, a hint of ripe melon and pear, quite a bit of minerality also. Fantastic balance. Third chew is a little bit fuller, there are caramel notes, creamy sweetness, thick and filling smoke. I want more.

Thick peat smoke, caramel sweetness, light ginger, cappucino, melon, pear, just marvellous. Lasts for ages.

Tobacco, medicinal peat, toffee, iodine. Yellow fruits, some herbal bitterness, good balance between sherry and peat, very nice

Last orders have been called [and called] and exhibitors are removing the bottles. “What to finish on?”, I ask “24yo Laphroaig?”. “Perfect”.

C: Yes, yes, and yes. Does contemporary Laphroaig get much better than this? Laphroaig’s style has significantly changed/evolved in the last 20 years, and not always to my liking. Independent bottler, the SMWS, have consistently brought out some crackers in the last 6+ years [29.223, for example], and this one is right up there with them. I daren’t ask the price.

totally different from Laphroaig's other basic lines.
This is similar to the old version of cask strength.
As peat whisky matures, it usually loses its peat character but this is alive. so impressed with rich malts flavour.

    Angus MacRaild:

Laphroaig 24 yo 1996/2020 (51.8%, Elixir Distillers 'The Single Malts Of Scotland', bourbon barrel, 217 bottles)
Colour: gold. Nose: these vintages are becoming totally gorgeous now. Silky soft peat smoke with wee pin holes of exotic fruits peeping through. Camphor, seawater, grapefruit, smoked olive oil, touches of mango, hessian and heather flower. A really beautiful nose. With water: some kind of peated pina colada! Pineapple, coconut, mango, gorse flower, kiln air, natural tar and a stray kumquat. Mouth: yes! Superb concentration, this syrupy effect that time has on peat and fruit flavours, simultaneously elevating and concentrating both. Sandalwood, dried coastal flowers, hessian, myrtle, dried herbs, olive oil, more camphor notes, smoked teas and crystallised exotic fruits. With water: smokier, peatier, more peppery, more leathery and oily textures, more camphor, putty, preserved lemons and exotic fruit teas. Finish: long, heathery, tarry, peppery, herbal and peaty with some resinous, slightly bitter fruits. Comments: Pristine, totally super old 90s Laphroaig captured at a perfect age. I adore this kind of concentrated profile.

...Oh, it goes without saying that it is the current situation.

    Color: old gold, mahogany reflection

Nose: greedy, resembles cask strength 10 # 11, well integrated alcohol, smoke, charcoal, a veil of old locomotive smoke, with a hint of spice, probably pepper, toasted almond.

Mouth: houo! Exotic fruits, nice surprise, melon, pepper, a fine and elegant peat.

Overall: long, on smoke and cut grass.
