Tasted as part of a Carn Mor relaunch vtasting with
Niel Hendriksz and the Southport Whisky Club.

Nose: vanilla, lemon ice, sandalwood, cut hay, fresh cut pears.
Palate: golden syrup and barley sugars.
Finish: peppery on the tongue followed by a juice explosion, like biting into a filled sweet. Peaches and cream and tropical fruit pavlova.

    With water

Nose: more aromatic, Szechuan peppercorns, candy cigarettes and white grapes.
Palate: bergamot, it's both oilier and spicier with water- not as balanced as before.
Finish: chalky notes and almond dragees.

Highly recommended, although to be fair the whole range is.

Owned by Pernod, the majority of Longmorn goes into Chivas blends. This small batch release comes from three vatted first-fill bourbon casks.

N: So very ‘SMWS’. As well as being spirit-firm, we’ve also firm first-fill cask action, there being a synergy/good marriage between all three casks. With emerging sugars, honeys and vanillas, it becomes more and more fruity & floral as it opens up.

T: Same as the nose, there’s that first-fill resinousness, but again, the spirit is allowed some say. With an oily mouthfeel comes a light fruitiness, light maltiness,… Overall, it’s well balanced, considering the things.

F: Resin-y, a touch peppery and green, ‘in a good way’.

C: A great start to proceedings, a very clean first-fill bourbon-matured expression of Longmorn, a whisky perhaps more often regarded as a sherried/bourbon-matured affair. Very decently priced too, at £45.

    • Nose
Quite fruity, with a hint of pineapple juice, red apples and mandarins. Followed by vanilla. And then I get a sour note from gooseberries mixed with unripe pears. Later also lemons.
    • Taste
A bit of an oily mouthfeel. Vanilla. A hint of caramel fudge and some white chocolate. Kiwi and pears. Oranges. And then a slightly bitter edge from pink grapefruit
    • Finish
Mid-long with mostly kiwi and pink grapefruit.
