A well priced and perfectly presented malt from the recent relaunch of Carn Mor. Although the packaging may have changed, it's good to see that the quality of the spirit is exactly the same. Value (£45) : 8/10
    • Nose
A wonderful combination of peat and sherry casks with both varieties leaving a mark. Classic red fruits, cranberries, orange peels. The Oloroso brings a touch of nuttiness while the PX brings a sweet treacle note. Spice from the sherry oak is also ever present with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. The peat here is light but noticeable, much like light embers from a bonfire with a touch of plasticine. Drying tobacco notes and a light sharpness of chilli heat.
    • Taste
Sweet and spicy. More caramel sweetness and touch of honey. Mouthcoating texture and wonderfully balanced alcohol. More berries, mandarins, cherries and plums. Smoky lapsang souchong tea now. More of those spices carry over from the nose. Some milk chocolate. This is dangerously drinkable. The smoke is quite subdued on the initial palate but develops into a much deeper, richer peat note.
    • Finish
The peat is dominant in the finish. It is now quite medicinal (reminiscent of Laphroaig peat, though maybe just the power of suggestion being Ardmore) A touch drying but long lasting due to the viscosity of the dram. I'm getting more dark chocolate and black forest now.

I also really like this malt from the ''Càrn Mòr Strictly Limited'' bottling series. There is already skillful barrel management behind it. Appears older than just 9 years and offers pleasant smokiness and appropriately sweet sherry notes in an appealing combination.
    • Nose
Not exaggerated greasy peat smoke with a light campfire style spreads out, accompanied by sweet dried fruit, dates and raisins, prunes, juicy-looking berries are also present, boiled cranberries, strawberry-rhubarb jam, further back there are Christmas spices and nutty aromas to be discovered, Cinnamon, star anise, a pinch of allspice and a bit of nutmeg, chopped almonds and walnuts, orange peel, Nuremberg Elisen gingerbread with a chocolate coating come to mind, as do spiced speculoos, oak is of course also there, but remains unobtrusive and mild, scattered tobacco crumbs, leather that has become brittle
    • Taste
A sweet and spicy start, brown sugar and toffee next to an incense smoker, almond butter, then the cinnamon campfire smoke takes off, a dry cigar with a thin layer of ash, dates and prunes in a crispy bacon coat, juicy raisins, ripe blueberries, and a strawberry or two , jelly made from blackcurrants and blackberries, the spices pick up speed, allspice and nutmeg, a small pinch of black pepper, a little aniseed, with longer rolling in the mouth it becomes more and more chocolaty and malty, caramelized walnuts, dark chocolate, aromatic oak wood with very little vanilla
    • Finish
Neatly medium long, the dark berries say goodbye with the dried fruits in tow, clear malt, a thick chunk of brown candy melts in the mouth, little heather, becoming a bit drier with oak and dark chocolate towards the end, finally the campfire dies down and it settles Mild smoke with a slightly earthy ash note and an aftertaste of spices

I liked it immediately. At the end of the 5cl, however, I was missing some complexity for currently €70 in June 2022 on the secondary market.

    01/22/2022:
Quite spectacular aroma and a bit primitive simplicity of taste and aftertaste. Not really quite good.
    • Nose
      87 87
Fur, leather, livestock, roasted barley, white grapes, vigilant granary, malic acidity, subtle notes of vanilla.
    • Taste
      85 85
Soot, ash, coal, quite sweet, farm notes, grilled sausages, sherry.
    • Finish
      84 84
Continues the theme of soot, ash, bitter, short, light sweetness, grill, sherry.

  8. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

2/3 of the bottle is empty and still I didn’t write a tasting note. Shame on me! But I did have had quite fun with this bottle so far. Ardmore is one of my personal favorite. Especially when it’s aged in sherry casks.
    • Nose
Lovely nose this is. At first I instantly thought it was good. But didn’t think it was super special or anything. But giving this one time inside the bottle and inside your glass, a great nose comes out, way ahead of its age. Great balance between cask types giving obviously more then enough red fruits, but also nuttiness plays it’s part as well as the ‘fresh’ peaty flavors and ’new’ leather. Ginger and clove and nutmeg are the most prominent spices here. This nose is intense and gives deep and very rich of flavors. It ticks a lot of boxes on my ‘like list’.
    • Taste
Soft, surprisingly gentle and well balanced. Nothing like most young, below 10yo whiskies. I’d expected a lot of dark flavors like chocolate, burnt nuts, coffee, red fruit syrup and stuff like that but it appears to be rather underdeveloped compared to the rest. The palate clearly picked up less sherry richness then nose and finish did.
    • Finish
Medium/Long. In the finish the continuation of the nose is reinstated. Lots of sherry flavors. Red fruits like raspberry and strawberry, leather, spices like clove and nutmeg, smoky flavors and fresh ‘floral’ peat.

The only pitty thing is that the palate is a bit strange in the whole. Nonetheless this whisky is absolutely a buy recommendation. I’ve paid €60 for it right after release. That makes it a good buy in my book. Todays 70-80 is a bit on the high side but if you like a young sherried whisky that’s way ahead of it’s age, it is absolutely worth your money.

A wonderfully balanced dram. The smoke was less intense than I expected. A tasty, tasty Ardmore made from good sherry barrels.
    • Nose
Intense but not overloaded sherry on the nose. The smoke of the Ardmore heralds itself from afar and comes closer and closer. Lots of chocolate, raisins and Christmas flavors. A slight mineral note comes along with the campfire smoke. No alcohol noticeable in the nose. Looks much older than the label suggests.
    • Taste
A slightly sweeter sherry profile, the symbiosis of Oloroso and PX is perfect. I'm not a fan of PX notes that are too cute, so I'm very happy here. The Oroloso counteracts the sweetness with a subtle dryness. Dark chocolate, campfire smoke, a little cinnamon and a distant clove in the taste. Dangerously tasty and tasty.
    • Finish
Not quite as bulky due to the ABV and age. But it doesn't have to be. Spice and sweetness are left with a little herbs and a campfire. No bitterness, orange jam and an association with burnt red fruits.

Very nice whisky. Give it some time, it will gain power, intensity, despite only 47,5%. Nice combination of peat, smoke and fruitiness.
    • Nose
      87 87
Pretty heavy nose, a lot of fruits, red fruits with a rubber touch, some smoky touch, bonfire smoke. Prunes. Berries. Quite some alcohol.
    • Taste
      86 86
Some sal ammoniac, a little pickering, pepper. Licorice. Some smoke, red fruits, berries, full body. In time alcohol gets more prominent.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still a bit of power, some more bitter smoke now, with some red fruitiness. Middle long. Later on more alcohol, warming in the belly, finish gets longer.

For the price on this I wouldn't have too many complaints.
It's a good attempt and I would be more than happy with it.
    • Nose
      83 83
I seem to have had a lot of these lately, the peat sherry ones.
Obviously some are better than others and to me it's all about the balance.
Judging by the nose it is quite promising.
The smokiness is there as well as the fruit and they are up and down on the seesaw.
    • Taste
      82 82
To me the balance is not quite there.
The peat is quite earthy and gritty and it is the first thing on arrival.
As you swill in around your mouth the fruit notes come and go but are very quickly replaced by the peat smoke.
It's very palatable I'll give it that.
    • Finish
      83 83
The fruit notes come more into play in the finish and they are quite creamy.
Just a little spice to add to it.

N: I find this rather Islay-esque. The Foz grabs The Whisky Exchange’s Black Friday Ardmore for comparison, of which I find general similarities. Notes then of oyster sauce and oily Frazzles,….. becoming more Ardmore-esque as the minutes pass by, it’s garage-y and very salty with some caper brine, lovely sweetness,.. plenty of action here. This is proving very popular amongst the Swaggers, many of which are very partial to the phenols.

T: Initially intense, then surprisingly and rapidly calm, almost reduced/flat, short and ozone-light,… then into an intense spicy saltiness, salted pebbles, salty roasted sour citrus,….

F: With the casks havin’ a go, I get a fair amount of gacky chewy action. Surprisingly succulent dry soft lingering smoke at the tail, it’s positively juicy by the end.

C: Very nice peated Speysider, though I’m not convinced enough to buy a bottle. Loses points for the slightly collapsed [for want of a better word] middle.

A great balanced malt, great barrels, a certain complexity and an excellent price-performance ratio
    • Nose
Slightly sweet with a hint of nuttiness, peat smoke is only slightly noticeable, cinnamon, cloves, spice, slightly malty
    • Taste
Spiciness with a fine sweetness, peat smoke resonates, slightly sticky, chocolate with caramel, fine herbal note, peat smoke becomes stronger over time,
    • Finish
Still sweet in the finish, peat smoke, medium to long, notes of coffee / espresso, fine chocolate

A successful marriage of sherry and peat.
The balance is good when you actually can choose what you want to focus on.
It's sweet, it's phenolic, there's red berries and the usual suspects.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is a wonderful follow up to the balanced nose.
Sweet dark berries and fruits with notes of chocolate in good harmony with a light peat.
Creamy mouthfeel with just the right amount of spice.
    • Finish
      86 86
The only problem with the finish is that it's too short.
OK, so it's medium+ but I'm greedy for this goodness and wouldn't have minded if it stayed even longer.
