Simple, young, tough, ok, you can drink, but the question is why?

  2. kikist scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Sprit is covered 100%, nice whisky but missing character...
Time is not friend of this whisky!

Leather polish, oranges, wood, wood polish, cashews, hazelnut
    • Taste
      84 84
Spicy oak, drying, bitter chocolate and coffee. These are the dominant notes. Spending time with it, there is some fruit, that stonefruit character i always find in Glenallachie. As well as a black tea astringency, but quite pronounced.
    • Finish
      87 87
Black tea again, long, bitter and dry, oaky, Very oaky. Hope you like oak, because I definitely do!

Intense, but also quite unbalanced, too single dimensional and burning alcohol
    • Nose
      82 82
Berries, sultanas, hints of dried fruits, wineish notes, spices, little cinnamon, cloves, little floral, hints of toffee, whiifs of varnish, little oak wood
    • Taste
      81 81
Little punchy, good sweetness, more berries, raisins, chocolate, spices, oak wood, hints of honey, dried fruits
    • Finish
      80 80
Medium long, warm, spicy, sweet, more wineish notes, quite alcoholic

Really very nicely put together and quite complex. Brown sugar, hard caramel, bounty bars, buttercream, maple syrup and beautiful clear oak aromas. Gradually, notes of coffee liqueur and sweet wine follow.
With water: a little fresher. Mirabelle tart, toasted brioche, forest honey, honey bear, malt sugar and freshly sawn oak.
    • Taste
      88 88
Wonderfully spicy and rooty-earthy. Ginger, maybe a touch of nutmeg and coffee, but also oranges, chestnut honey and ground spices. Really very nice, although you definitely have to have an affinity for spicy whiskys ... I have them anyway ... ;-)
With water: fresh, juicy oranges, a little honey, mint and ginger. Earth, dark yeast cake crust and dark gummy bears in the background. Really nice
    • Finish
      88 88
Long, spicy, earthy and increasingly chocolaty. Over time, forest honey and a touch of ready-made sweet wine follow.

Mild, sweet, pleasing with a slight spice. Nice for a twelve year old whisky. However, I think the current purchase price of around € 60 is too high. There are similarly exciting but significantly cheaper bottlings in this category.
    • Nose
      85 85
Mild sweetness, slightly vinous, cookies. I like it.
    • Taste
      84 84
Nice start for 48% vol. Light wine note, cautiously spicy. Gentle, slightly bitter wood note, slightly fruity.
    • Finish
      83 83
Gentle, nice barrel note, slightly fruity. Good, but rather short.

I find it a bit weak in the nose. On the palate and in the finish, however, it is ok.
    • Nose
Vanilla, malt, slightly sweet, oak, spices
    • Taste
sweet malty, some oak, vanilla, light citrus fruits, spices, some peach
    • Finish
sweet, honey, vanilla, some oak, spicy, caramel, chocolate, later becoming bitter

Clove is one spice I don’t care for, and here it shows up in spades. Unique oak flavor, but not to my liking.

    N: ‘Clever’ active wood-driven PX-ey/sweet wine-like spirit.

T: An effortless, desirably contemporary arrival with a slightly sweet winey and sublimely buttery mouthfeel. You can see the Glendronach evolution, though Billy Walker’s Glenallachie’s appear more spirit-driven [younger stock, sure] and expertly cask managed.

F: More sour with water, just slightly spicy[/active] before plenty of chocolate and soft toffee.

C: Very present and modern expression, even post-modern perhaps? – or is that term positively out-dated?

Pleasant whisky. It is soft in the mouth. The clear sharpness is not annoying either. The depth and complexity corresponds to its age.
    • Nose
Vanilla, malt and some rock candy. Then oak seasoning and herbs. Slightly floral notes appear and evaporate quickly, making way for the scent of orange, but with little sweetness.
    • Taste
Dark sweetness and then a distinct sharpness on the tongue, accompanied by a restrained spiciness. A little cinnamon and cocoa.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long, with an interplay of chocolate and spiciness.

    nose:
malt, cereal, mild spices, fruity and sweet with a little white chocolate
    mouth:
sweet fruits, a little on the banana, a little smoke, as on a pile of fresh ash in the morning !!,, the old varnish side, a little dust, fruit in compote,, more "elegant, refined" (sic!) than the spanish, a return of pink grapefruit (no raspberry here) with bitter skin, a little parched herbs. a little toned in fact.
    final:
on the same markers with now almost obvious pink fruit, sweet spices, velvety, dry wood and dust.
    • Finish
18 months in virgin French oak.
more spicy on the 2nd try

    with water: almonds, marzipan, cherries

Conclusion: especially with a little water, the malt opens up nicely, good balance between the sweet honey and almond notes and the spiciness of the new barrels, I like that very much, only a bit too oaky / dry at the back
    • Nose
      87 87
Heather honey, oranges, vanilla, nutmeg, significantly less cinnamon than in the Spanish Oak, coconut cream, a little milk chocolate
    • Taste
      87 87
Creamy, but a little lighter than Spanish Oak, honey, heather, oranges and a few spices
    • Finish
      83 83
medium, oranges, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, cookie dough, honey, finally too strong oak tannins, very dry

Had this at an online tasting with Billy Walker.

Nice golden color great texture but again i think this would have been better without the finish.
    • Nose
      86 86
Very interesting, you get a lot of what makes these new Glenallachies so interesting

Bananas, Mocca, Cocoa, Pineapples, Honey, Caramel
    • Taste
      86 86
      Delivers what the nose suggests.

Honey, Butterscotch, Cinnamon, young grapes, apricots, peaches
    • Finish
      84 84
Very much the same as the taste but it adds some cocoa and coffee to it, much better balanced than the spanish virgin oak but still very spicy

I had all 3 GAs of the Virgin Oak Series in my glass at the same time, they are quite different, but nobody really convinced me - I have a hard time with Virgin Oak
    • Nose
      86 86
Maple syrup, vanilla, cherry, a musty cellar note in the background
    • Taste
      85 85
dark forest honey, sweet caramel, toffee, cocoa powder, again the musty, dusty cellar, wet autumn leaves, clear oak
    • Finish
      86 86
The spiciness of the oak lingers unexpectedly long between dry fruit sweetness

A harmonious single malt bottling from The GlenAllachie. Delightfully sweet notes of honey, vanilla and caramel complement spicy oak, soft tannins and dry cocoa/coffee aromas to create a pleasantly warming and comforting drinking experience. A dram to enjoy, relax and dream, and perfectly bottled with an alcohol content of 48%.

I thank Kirsch Import e.K. for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Sweet on the nose with honey, toffee and orange blossom, accompanied by delicious vanilla. Spicy notes of nutmeg and a little oak are joined by a touch of coffee aromas in the back.
    • Taste
A pleasant, creamy sweetness is immediately noticeable on the palate with toffee, forest honey and caramel. Then immediately follows a warming spiciness of nutmeg and oak. The creamy sweetness is gradually accompanied by slightly bitter notes, especially orange oil, coffee, and some pink grapefruit.
    • Finish
The finish is long lasting and lovely warming with dark caramel notes, a pinch of cinnamon and some nutmeg. Becomes a bit drier towards the end with slightly spicy oak and cocoa.

With water: After adding a few drops of water, the nose becomes more spicy with honey, caramel, coffee notes, oak and a little pepper. Still creamy and sweet on the palate, but also spicier with more dry notes of caramel and tannins. The finish is slightly shorter and warming with prickling oak spice, tannins and cocoa towards the end.
