Another quality release from AWWC, the PX influence is similar to many modern PX finishes, fringing plenty of colour and sweet, dark fruit to the dram . Value (£74) : 6/10
    • Nose
Rich and dark sherry notes on the nose. Sweet dark fruits overwhelm at first with dates, black cherries and prunes. Dark roast espresso along with sweet butterscotch and toffee. Clementine peels and some solvent astringency. Dark molasses and a faint nuttiness. Quite spicy on the nose as well with ginger and black pepper warmth along with some cinnamon spice. A touch of minty aniseed.
    • Taste
Here this dram comes alive. Thick and viscous on the palate. The dark fruits remain with the addition of sweet PX-like raisins. More citrus peels. Hints of muscovado sugar and some treacle pudding. The initial rush of sweetness develops into dark bitter chocolate and some ground coffee. More cinnamon. Mouth drying tobacco leaves and lashes of leather. Fresh cracked aromatic black pepper.
    • Finish
The finish is boozy chocolate oranges and rum raisins. Lovely and bittersweet throughout with a cooling menthol at the end. However it also retains some of that black pepper warmth. More Christmas spices here in the finish with nutmeg and cinnamon.

    Blind tasting.
I'm a little torn. Alcohol involved crazy well. Very fruity PX influence on the nose without too much Maggi. On the spicy side in the mouth, without becoming too woody. But it's a Sherrsky guy. Distillery character is completely hidden. Could come from any distillery. I like more balance and not just barrel influence.

This is an Infrequent Flyers bottling by Alistair Walker [Whisky Company], an IB-first for me.

    N: A clean sherried [~Edradour-like] nose with a sweet omelette eggy-ness.

T: [Faultlessly] clean amalgamated sugary sultana-sweet sherry malt with a soft bitter note.

F: Solid travel and development into a consolidated rice pudding gravy-ness, seasoned/flavoured with Demerara sugar and vanilla cream. Yum!

C: A refined [not crude] PX sherry bomb.

For sherry lovers, everything is textbook, perhaps with the exception of the saltiness. Delicious, but the style of glenrothes is extremely difficult to discern. Balance 22
    • Nose
      88 88
Characteristic sherry power, tropical sweet fruits in honey or molasses. It develops over time, but remains powerful enough. With a high degree of alcoholism, there is no aroma. 22-22.5
    • Taste
      89 89
Oily, quite dense, with a little salt, which contrasts with the fruity sweet aroma. Lightly salted cucumber in honey. Salted caramel. 22.5
    • Finish
      89 89
Long-lasting, rich, but not spicy. Oily. A little red pepper. The oral cavity takes a long time. 22.5

    Color: mahogany
    Viscosity: oily
    Dram: undiluted and diluted

    Conclusion:
In the nose I find that the PX barrel only gave off color and hardly any smell. However, the taste of the malt surprises you and the PX barrel did a full job here and sometimes I think that the finish was a bit too long. I find it a little unbalanced. What I found really impressive, however, was the totally striking caramel note after Werters Echter. I've never seen it so clearly with any whisky. All in all an interesting whisky, but not worth the money it is called for.

    My rating system:
    100-95: Exceptional whiskys
    80-94: top whisky
    50-79: standard whisky
    0-49: flops
    • Nose
The malt is the first to be fresh and fruity, behind it there are dark fruits like sweet cherries, cherry lollies, ripe blackberries, raspberry jam, overall you can tell that the malt has got a finish and the bourbon character comes through again and again, vanilla croissants, creme brulee, popcorn , Cotton candy, caramel bonbons, slightly sour notes of gooseberries, Holstein plum jam, delicate moments of used oil, gasoline fumes when refueling, sultanas, cinnamon powder, really creamy, almost buttery like melted butter, forest honey, fresh rain falling on the street, vanilla pods, right stark notes of Werter's real caramel candy, butterscotch, some mint anise, dark molasses
    • Taste
The taste clearly shows the sherry aromas, sultanas, prunes, dark chocolate, light mocha and espresso notes, dark wood with plenty of tannins, but the taste also shows the beautiful caramel notes of Werter's real, Holstein plum jam, winter spices like cinnamon, vanilla pods, cloves , spicy gingerbread, dried tobacco leaves, treacle, ground coffee, freshly cracked aromatic pepper, rum raisins, nutmeg, with water there are a little more light-fruity aromas of rhubarb, gooseberries, blackberries, black currants, really dark sour cherries
    • Finish
First fruity like dried fruit such as prunes, dates and sultanas, which then turn into bitter ones like dark chocolate, espresso, mocha, cappuccino, dried tobacco leaves, spicy gingerbread, rum raisins, freshly ground coffee, winter spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, a bit of cooling menthol, slight heat of freshly ground white pepper
