I've had ups and downs with Arran.
That said, the downs have not been disasters, but the ups have neither been exceptional.
I found this to be the game changer.
    Delicious and dangerously drinkable.
    • Nose

This is just about as perfect as a sherry nose can get.
Nothing is too much "out there". A very good balance between the distillate and the cask influence.
No need to elaborate details, it's got exactly what it needs, nothing more, nothing less.
    • Taste
      93 93
And after the nose there is a surprise in the taste.
It's not your typical sherry tipple.
It would be an insult to call it Ribena, but it has more the taste of a pleasant blackcurrant cordial than sherry.
Add the spice and it gets seriously yummy.
Serve it at your Xmas reception and people will think you have discovered the ultimate mulled wine receipt.

Extremely well behaved with everything just slowly fading.

Quite nice, but the Arran itself can only be felt in the nose, the rest is rather covered with sherry and dominates too much for me.
    • Nose
      87 87
Great beeswax nose, with lots of sherry fruit, whereby the tartaric/fruit acidity is already noticeable. Behind it citrus freshness and a touch of wood, freshly waxed new oak parquet.
    • Taste
      85 85
Slightly thin and surprisingly... smoky? No, it's more of a Bowmore-like sweet spice that I didn't expect at all. Concentrated lilac and honey aromas follow.
    • Finish
      84 84
At the end there are red gummy bears (currants) and at the very end give way to a very pronounced fruit acidity. And again that light peaty spiciness, like 12.54ppm or something like that.

    • Nose
Very mild, malty sherry notes. No offnotes at all, immaculate sherry. Cooked fruits with soft spices
    • Taste
Very juicy, extremely drinkable, it follows suit compared to the nose. Its even better than the 2019, but that one had a very singular ever so slightly irish note to it that sets it apart from the average sherried whiskies.
    • Finish
Its really about the nose and tast, not about the texture, body, strength or anything like that. Its slightly above the expectations in terms of presentation of course, and presents itself to the enthusiasts. Definitely not mediocre, probably the best midrange sherried core range whisky today (for me).

    02/12/2022:
Gorgeous sherry whisky! Weighted to the last detail, absolute drinkability and balance.
    • Nose
A pile of fruit marmalade, sherry, condensed milk, wild berries, pleasant oak, iris, apples (fresh and barrel), dried apricots, background varnish, bubblegum, dried berries, aristocratically ascetic and calm, yet expressive.
    • Taste
Fruit, oak, marmalade candies, tropical fruit flavors, dried fruits, grapes.
    • Finish
Candy with a tropical taste, barely noticeable oak, delicate sherry, long.

Check out another 18 year old Arran release from the distillery's main line...

    ???? Color: Porto Tawny

???? Aroma: dry and tart at first... tobacco-tannin components delicately framed by motifs of sherry aging... infused dried fruit compote... boiled raisins and prunes... light aromas of dry planed boards and furniture varnish... a drop of brown syrup cane sugar...

???? Taste: the taste repeats a light tobacco component, old leather goods... the astringency of oak tannins is combined with the sweetness of overcooked dried fruits... a small drop of peppermint... a few spices - allspice, cloves, star anise...

???? Finish: long and warm... almost completely repeating flavors

???? Conclusion: an excellent, though not a masterpiece release... quite mature and complex... I would call it "cigar", it will compete with GlenDronach 18 YO, its money is quite justified

    ???? Points: 86.5

    Blender's glass
A very decent regular release. One of the best for the money. The nose is simply gorgeous, but the rest of the components are at the level
    • Nose
      90 90
An excellent complex nose that needs 20-30 minutes in a glass to fully open. Lots of dried fruits, dark chocolate and cinnamon. The apple-floral profile of Arran spirits is also felt well.
    • Taste
      88 88
Fresh, and quite firm for 46%. Caramel, dried fruit compote, a little bit of coffee, citrus fruits in the background. Slightly inferior to the nose in the palette of derivatives
    • Finish
      89 89
      Long, spicy, knits a little

  24. BaggyGreen scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

On first impression this presents as fulsome, a bit on the decadent side and very much cask-driven. Not exactly the hit for me, as I prefer a better balanced Arran where the distillery character doesn't have to fight to be found. But there's no denying it'll find favour among those who prefer heavily sherried malts with the cask right up front and in your face.
    • Nose
      84 84
Figs and dates right from the first sniff, followed by black cherries encased in a dark chocolate coating. Behind these dried fruit notes some creamy American oak begins to emerge (from the 2nd-fill hoggies), leading to sweet notes of dark forest honey and some toffee. Given time, mild spicy notes of nutmeg and cinnamon appear (from the European oak, most likely). Finally, a distant hint of blood orange reminds me that this is in fact an Arran bottling. Otherwise I'm missing the usual palate of citrus and tropical fruits which the Arran distillate normally offers. Perhaps due to the fact that this bottle hasn't been open long, I get a slight whiff of acetone, but I wouldn't place too much weight on that. In total, a story principally of the casks speaking.
    • Taste
      85 85
A mouth coating, almost oily texture on the arrival, pleasantly warming. Then the casks are back again: some creamy American oak, backed up by more prominent spices and tannins from the European oak. There's noticeable power here with a tingling sensation on the tip of the tongue, but, moving the malt around in the mouth, those dried fruit flavours, so typical of ex-Oloroso casks, come through again. On the second sip the malt becomes more sensual: it seems to caress the tongue. And, with the addition of a little water, things get almost silky and that acetone note disappears completely. The water also allows the tannins from the European oak to withdraw into the background where they belong.
    • Finish
      83 83
There's a middling finish to enjoy here. Without water, those tannins will still be present and there'll be a drying sensation in the mouth and at the back of the throat, which is not particularly my thing. With water, however, you can avoid this. In total, this is solid and well-made material, but I hanker for more of Arran's distillery character. And so I still leave the table dreaming of the old Arran 18 from 2017/2018 which, to me, showed a very professional and delicious balance.

    Very promising.

    Really intense sherry nose.
    Chocolate and vanilla.

The whisky is gorgeous in color, especially in the light of the spring sun.
Very light and pleasant sherry aroma. Absolutely not aggressive. Let her breathe calmly and morph into chocolate cherries and toasted strawberry jam.
The taste is balanced, light, sweet-fruity. A bit spicy, but very little. There are practically no shades, everything is very smooth.
The finish is easy and elusive again.
A great example of a well-balanced sherry whisky drink that doesn't need to be poured into a single barrel.

    1548) The Arran, 18YO (2020)
Trying the 3rd version of Arran 18YO, back when this was released the first time in 2015 with tag "Pure By Nature"-100% ex sherry cask. Then a double cask when they relabel in 2016, and now back to 100% sherry, with more older barrels now at disposal, he has all rights trying to flex his muscle.

To buy or not to buy. I’ve had this one in my basket several times now but each time it had to make place for something else. Don’t know why but now it’s time to try and the initial nose tells me a simple thing, I should have bought this months ago!
    • Nose
A beautiful deep, richt and balanced nose! Big sherry but in a refined and mature way. It is a lot of sherry to handle and one could discuss if this still is a recognizable Arran but hell this is very good anyway! Very deep and intense flavors of Forrest fruits, honey, figs, dark raisins, hazelnuts, chestnut, Turkish tea, leather and dark spices. This nose really offers a lot!
    • Taste
Bittersweet. The intentions of the palate are made clear immediately. Quite some tannins are present on the palate but fortunately it never gets too dry. Intense flavors of forrest fruits, cinnamon, walnuts, black tea and a whiff of black pepper. The balance and mouthfeel are great. It coats the palate and leaves a silky feeling.
    • Finish
The long finish is a delight! Again great spicy tea flavors. At this part it reminds me of rooibos. Also figs are present. It gives quite some cinnamon in this part as well as fresh tobacco flavors.

This whisky didn’t disappoint me in any part. Just a lovely example of a very well affordable, mature 46% ABV, OB whisky that beats almost every modern young, dark, IB sherry bomb at CS. Even more when taking the ridiculous prices you pay these days for underaged sherry bombs, in consideration. This will wipe the floor with these whiskies

Lots of sherried notes, but that is not all. Amazing. Wonder if they used any port casks in the mix? A+ grade new whisky that costs less than an arm and a leg. Rare today? You bet.

A truly wonderfully aged, well sherried expression from a distillery that's going from strength to strength. Value (£75) : 8/10
    • Nose
A true fruit bomb, and not just from the sherry, the fruity spirit character manages to come through as well here! Plenty of tart red fruits on the nose with a spritz of bright lime freshening it all up. Raspberries, Morello cherries, dried figs and some Turkish delight. A big note or dark chocolate coated oranges. Strawberry conserve in a rhubarb tart that is filled with sultanas as well. Some bright red apples and a whiff of vanilla. Balsamic vinegar and dried tobacco. Cinnamon and ginger with plenty of orange peels round off some oaky notes.
    • Taste
Gentle and creamy on the immediate palate. Then, a blast of those fresh red fruits rolled in caramel. Grape must brings some tartness and some bitterness of dark chocolate. More orange peels and vanilla. Orchard fruits as well with apples, grapes and some tinned peaches. Again more of that tangy orange and rhubarb pie. A large spoonful of brown sugar before the oak tannins come through. Unlit cigars and leather. Some cracked black pepper and a touch of salinity. A sherry bomb? Well not exactly. It has plenty of sherried characteristics but at the same time it is still so well rounded and very drinkable.
    • Finish
It finishes as a continuation of the development from the palate. Small amounts of sweetness but with more oak influence coming through now. I get a cherry flavoured lozenge. A minty coolness here in the finish as well. Drying and bitter-sour, very long lasting on the palate with a memory of fruit left over.

The grandiose nose is paramount with this malt. The rest is tasty too, but can't quite keep up. Overall a must buy for the price.

Pickled strawberries together with fresh citrus notes, slightly mineral, coffee, some cherries and raisins, little by little mango and peaches are added
    • Taste
      87 87
Creamy, red fruits, light to slightly tangy citrus notes, spicy oak with a slight bitterness, delicate mineral notes, warmth comes up over time
    • Finish
      86 86
Slightly bitter in the finish, more red-fruity and more coffee-heavy than in the nose and on the palate, medium-long finish

This is a vast improvement over past Arran 18 releases. Bravo. Arran is coming around. I knew it would eventually. I think we can expect good things in the future, based on this 2020 release. My wife loves this decadent "sweetie" as she calls it.

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger.
This would have been interesting to see what a little water could have done but as it was a sample I rated as God intended. Arran for me have always been steady and this is a cut above.

Looking at the colour of this and it's about as dark as it gets, almost red wine territory.
As Peatbogger mentioned all the usual suspects are there including Keyser Soze.
There is something in the sweetness that makes this different from the others but I can't put my finger on it.
Maybe going back to that wine. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
      It smells great so.
    • Taste
      90 90
Luckily this tastes like a good matured sherry cask whisky.
A tangy sweetness that makes you smile whether you want to or not.
The dark fruits and the spice compliment each other very nicely.
It's a sherry bomb but I do know I'm drinking a well balanced dram.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finish is quite creamy and a little bitter, a combination i don't think I've come across and does it work? Well for me it does.
The death is like a cherry Locket throat losinger sweet right at the moment it breaks and the honey trickles down your throat.

Excellent, well balanced malt. All sherry lovers must drink.
Main Association: Cherry Jam. It is everywhere here - in aroma, taste, and aftertaste.
