Whisky Reviews for Ledaig 2011 SV

19 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.28 points

  1. Immerenga scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

In addition to the typical smoke, the nose offers a delicate impression of green apples, lemons and fresh grass. The alcohol is noticeable but not intrusive

The Madeira barrel is now coming through a bit, if not intrusive. Where the nose still smelled like spring, we are here in autumn. The colors become darker, the finish dry and peppery. The smoke almost seems like a minor matter. Sounds strange, because the smoke is definitely very noticeable, but somehow correct. Simply well integrated ????????

    • Nose
      87 87
The typical Ledaig steam is immediately at the start, then candy floss, sour apples, citrus fruits and clear alcohol, slightly floral and the youth is clearly noticeable
    • Taste
      84 84
Intense, warming and oily, burnt caramel, really thick peat smoke, black pepper and intense mocha, light nutty and fruity notes that don't really stand a chance
    • Finish
      82 82
Dry and still quite bitter, the tingling on the tongue is still evident, the smoke is still very present, later herbs come through with a slight sweetness.

Sweetness dominates the nose and taste. Long and sweet smoky finish.
    • Nose
Smooth and modest nose, hardly any peatsmoke. A lot of sweetness, vanilla, some vegetal green with some woodfire smoke on the background. Roasted meat, then more sweetness again.
    • Taste
Licorice, pretty strong, pepper, peatsmoke, sour note underneath. Sweet as well, honey, caramel, full body. Then some bitterness peeps in, followed by pure sugar sweetness.
    • Finish
Still pretty strong, smoke, sweet, vanilla and something sweet fruity, peach. Ashy edge underneath, pretty long finish. Then also some bitterness, drying mouthfeel.

  11. larswehmeier scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Strong Ledaig. The Madeira adds spicy, chocolaty and nutty flavors to it. This means that it is significantly less fruity than Cuvée 1-4.
    • Nose
      85 85
Strong wood smoke rises first from the glass. Reminiscent of smoked bacon in the smoker. The alcohol bites your nose a little.
It gets cuter over time. Spicy honey and vanilla. Apricot jam. Pepper. Walnuts.
    • Taste
      85 85
Powerful start. Dark caramel. Toasted aromas. Pleasant chilli heat on the tongue. Oak and dry cocoa on the palate. Less fruity and sweet than the nose. Overall rather spicy, strong and tart. Espresso.
    • Finish
      83 83
Long, warm and spicy. Gets pretty dry. Cocoa remains with oak and smoke.

A pleasant combination of sweetness, yellow fruit and warming spices. The influence of Madeira is subtle. A beautiful winter warmer.

I thank Kirsch Import e.K. for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Sweet scent on the nose of honey and vanilla, paired with notes of smoked ham, anise, white pepper and some cloves. Behind this, light fruits emerge, especially apricot. Subtle smoke always resonates. The alcohol is well integrated and not pungent.
    • Taste
An intense start on the palate with sweet vanilla and pale fruit, immediately followed by a strong warming spiciness with pepper and chili peppers. As soon as this warmth fades, creamy notes of honey and yellow fruit jam appear. Smoke floats discreetly above everything.
    • Finish
The finish is long and creamy, becoming increasingly dry with smoke, ash, some oak, slightly bitter walnut aromas and an earthy note.

With water: After the addition of water much more present and intense on the nose with noticeable alcohol. The smoke is pushed into the background, leaving room for vanilla, honey and more yellow fruit aromas. Sweet and prickling on the palate with a slight pepperiness. Much less warming, but more creamy vanilla, apricot fruit, ginger and a touch of smoke with some smoked ham. The finish is still long and pleasantly warming with creamy vanilla and honey, becoming drier with time and showing notes of smoke, ash and cloves.
