Nice Islay whisky. He can take a little water. Some suppliers describe it as a cognac finish, but I couldn't find any clues for that and there's no evidence of that either in terms of taste.
    • Nose
      90 90
Sea shore, mineral notes, honey and subtle smoke from a peat fire. Fruity notes, light, peach, spicy tobacco and old oak.
    • Taste
      88 88
On the palate, immediately the peat fire on the beach, vanilla sweetness with chocolate, tart flavors of citrus with the peels. Sharpness towards ginger, now darker fruits that are ripe. Mocha coffee with spicy-sweet oak.
    • Finish
      89 89
Reverberation is rather long, the smoke from the peat fire becomes a bit ashy. The saline notes end sweet, somewhat hot and spicy.

    • Nose
      90 90
Powerful sea breezes, lemons, cold medicine, medicine chests, mint.
    • Taste
      89 89
BBQ, smoked bacon, vanilla ice cream, honey, pineapple. Not very alcoholic, feels mellower than the alcohol content.
    • Finish
      88 88
Mild sweetness lingers for a long time. Slight bitterness at the end.

So many potent and tasty old whisky tea notes, mint ice cream with some chocolate chunks, French vanilla ice cream, honey, and engine oil. The nose is interesting and fantastic and it has a great thick, gentle, creamy, mouth feel. (90).
Five-and-a-half months late and it's bringing a notable amount of diced citrus and tropical fruits along with the other notes. (91)

I could see it being a Laphroaig but I honestly think its a Caol Ila with a richer slightly medicinal profile (like a stronger and maybe simplier version of the Port Askaig 28).

Anyhow, this is a good malt but it definitely needs time in the glass to earn my 89 score. Be patient with it.

An unnamed 27 year old Islay whisky 8n cask strength.
According to a very good information source, it should be a Laphroaig.
If that's true, the price called would be a real, real bargain.
Otherwise, I think it's just terrific regardless of that.
Very complex and at the same time round, soft and balanced.
Peat, smoke, salt and lighter colored fruits such as apples, pears and lemons / zest and juice form a wonderful unit.
    Great.
    Highly recommended.

Was absolutely convincing as test winner in our tasting among 7 whiskys with 19 participants.
    A round thing.
    Smoke and aromas harmonize perfectly.

Peats Beast 27yo. 50.1%. Consumed Dec 2020 at a blind tasting.

BLIND TASTING NOTES: Aroma has a strange kind of smoke. Burnt plastic and burnt twigs, some bubblegum. Touch of seared pineapple. Milky - like slightly sour milk. Taste is restrained smoke to start, building greater and then a bigger punch in the finish. No linger to it - it stops short. Very one-dimensional and it's totally 'empty' behind the smoke. I'm thinking it could be an under-par edition of Ballantruan or a new entry-level peated Speyside. Bitter in the finish despite an overall impression of youth. There's a soapiness. Hmm... I'll not be buying a bottle of whatever this is! 2.75/66

OBSERVATIONS POST-REVEAL: I don't have much of a benchmark for Peat's Beast bottlings. I scored the standard bottling an 85 and so in that knowledge I would have approached this 27yo edition with some expectation. The difficulty with an older peated expression of a brand called something like 'Peat's Beast' is always going to be retaining and emphasising the peat - there's no issue with that here though - it seems to achieve that but at the cost of offering nothing else, and the age brings a bitterness. I would have preferred a loss of even more of the peat in exchange for a more complex flavour.

    My guess would be Laphroaig.
