I'm curious to know the maturation details. The first fill sherry cask finisher has been very active and gave us a very rich and tasty whisky despite its youth. Very good selection.
    • Nose
Rich. A battle between sherry and peat. Smoky, tarry, meaty, camphory, earthy. Leather and tobacco. Dried fruits (prunes, raisins). Coffee. Dark Chocolate. Spices. Heavily peated, heavily sherried but well-balanced. With time and lower volume, aromatic herbs and citrusy notes.
    • Taste
Surprisingly the palate is not as heavy as expected. Sherry and peat are still working in tandem, the palate is rich but also more chiselled and dry. Still some rancio, tobacco, coffee, dark chocolate, spices and smoke but also citrusy and coastal notes (smoked fish).
With water... forget water. The nose is more tarry, the palate simpler.
    • Finish
Long, lingering dried fruits, cocoa powder, spices and ashes.

At first, very earthy with dead grass. Dark chocolate and camphor. Metallic like rotten pipes, then slowly showed some salty beef jerky. Smoke from burnt meat cooked with thyme. Chinese hawthorn, beetroot, dried dates with dirt covered. Wet burnt wood from the emptied glass.
    • Taste
      87 87
Mandarin orange, chenpi, toffee and maple syrup. Rum raisin nut chocolate bars. Pepper spiciness, surprisingly not that strong and tasted mellow. Sour plums. Seaweed. Sweet hay and tobacco. Red clay with plant roots.
    • Finish
      89 89
Nice liquorice under the ash. A burst of vegetative peat. Beetroot and sugar coated roasted walnuts, tiny bit of numb chilli. Toffee with some coffee candy. More nutty in 20s towards the end.

Pretty young, but not too bad - some water recommended
    • Nose
      86 86
Very nutty, vinous, dried berries, raisins, sherry notes, little rubbery, leather, shoe polish, hints of smoke, little chocolate and toffee, whiffs of solvent or varnish
    • Taste
      89 89
Punchy, chocolaty, mocha, little liquorice, subtle sweetness, spicy, cloves, nutmeg, xmas spice, black pepper, more toffee, rubber, notes of leather, little smoky, some dried fruits, plums, dates - not bad
    • Finish
      87 87
      Long, warm, spicy, toffee, chocolate

The nose: Marine peat, a little grassy and coastal side (seaweed ...) then sherry is felt as well as a bitter chocolate side.
Palate: A mix of red fruits and black fruits, the peat can be put in the background, it almost disappears. It is surprising but of great success.
Final: It's long but fine, the peat comes back forward without hiding the other aromas, it's a sherry / peat duality and it's really well done.

91/100 A high level peaty / sherry especially for this age

LMDW had not produced a transcendental smoked and sweet whisky. Only wood, chocolate and licorice but the mix of those tastes is like a draft.
Take a sample, not a bottle if you looking for smoke Caol Ila.

A very nice Caol Ila, a nice balance between peat and Sherry. Clearly one of my WL 2020 favorites.
    • Nose
A Sherry and Darky nose but with this beautiful Made In Caol Ila peat. There is a perfect mix between dried fruits and fatty peat.
A dab of glue is also wandering around.
    • Taste
A very straight whisky in the continuity of the nose.
It's pretty crisp but it goes away quickly. A nice rather medicinal peat accompanied by dried fruits (nuts, hazelnuts ...), figs And a slight meaty taste.
      Some spices too.
    • Finish
Nice length on peat, cocoa, some dried fruits and a hint of fig.
