N: Incredibly similar profile to the 21yo Hibiki - though more woody.
    T: Thin/acute aniseed attack. Also oily>waxy.
    F: Blackberry juice finish.
C: Decent but not one thats going to quite beat the Hibiki tonight. Maybe this got rather tired in the bottle.Scores a B-

  3. WhiskyLovingPianist scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

N: Molasses sweet, putty with river reeds [bulrush?], pineapple bark and a light waft of field mushrooms.
    T: A compact arrival with a grassy>light herbal & toffee complex.
F: Light grassy & oaky dry. Tannins come in one minute later.
C: Do you find the Japanese present old oak tannins in a different way to Scotch? - with neat balancing & integration, that you don't necessarily notice the engineering behind it all. A very good ‘pure malt’, but one i still dont get excited about.Scores a B-

It's a whisky with two faces for me. A nose in which the sweeter sides dominates, and a palate that is spicier.
    • Nose
Bit dusty at first. Then sandalwood and some light glue. Plenty of vanilla follows, with also ripe tropical fruit, cinnamon and apples. A bit waxy. Balanced and refreshing.
    • Taste
Slightly sour and bitter, lots of oak influence. Coffee and cinnamon. Pretty dry, so lots of tannins. Also more spices with pepper and cloves.
    • Finish
Black tea, milk chocolate, tannins and some tobacco. Long.

The nose on this Japanese classic is light and clean with a hint of grass. The taste is complex with notes of cinnamon, vanilla, dark chocolate, and a touch of salt. The finish is sweet and long with a bit of fruitiness.

Taketsuru is a blended malt from Japan?s second-largest distiller, Nikka, and is
named in honour of Masataka Taketsuru, often referred to as ?the father of
Japanese whisky,? and founder of the Nikka company. The component whiskies come
from Nikka?s two distilleries, namely Yoichi and Miyagikyo, both of which are
designed to produce a wide permutation of spirit types. Yoichi can turn out five
million litres of spirit a year and continues to use direct-fired stills,
fuelled by coal, making both unpeated and peated spirit. Miyagikyo has a similar
capacity and is equipped with four pairs of pot stills, as well as Coffey
stills, which are sometimes used to distil malted barley, principally destined
for blending with malt spirit from the pot stills. Taketsuru blended malt is
available in 12, 17 and 21-year-old expressions and the top of the range
21-year-old offers a sweet, rich nose, with figs, sultanas and Sherry. Smoky
molasses develops with time, and beyond that, an icing sugar note. Bold fruit
flavours on the palate, ripe oranges and plums, plus ginger and discreet wood
smoke. Medium to long in the finish, with lingering smoke and cinnamon.

  10. Ivynor scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

A well-made whiskey, nice and slightly sherry, which can not pierce because of its lack of character and power.
    • Nose
Fairly sweet, sweet and vanilla. The wood is quite active and takes up a lot of space.
    • Taste
A good creamy texture, on hazelnut, caramel, vanilla. It's greedy and easy. Always the bitterness of wood behind.
    • Finish
Medium, on dried fruits, wood, vanilla, caramel.
