Surprisingly pungent! The nose is the best part - fresh and romantic like strawberry ice cream.

Surprisingly the beginning nose is quite pungent, despite the mere 46% ABV! There's strawberry ice cream and lot of tart red berry jam. When the alcoholic notes faded a little, there comes fresh spearmint and concentrated tart tangerine juice on top of oak. Then appeared the pear and peach...and new plastic toy. The berry notes consolidated into strawberry fillings of chewing candy, which is a little too sweet on the nose, albeit quite elegant, and perhaps young and romantic.
    • Taste
      82 82
Woody and a little bitterly. The rich, mouthwatering juicy flavour comes to the rescue. But the two do not seems integrated. Very strong, over-brewed black tea, and burnt nut skins.
    • Finish
      80 80
Grape seed oil at the back. Unfortunately the resinous after taste is just too prominent and not to my liking.

I have never seen a whisky with such a distinct aroma of floral perfumery, the taste of barberry. This is definitely a memorable pattern for me!
    A pleasant and drinkable whisky.
Judging by the profile, it becomes obvious that these are Bushmills spirits. As in the case of Bushmills, you just want to enjoy this whisky without delving into the details.

    • Nose
No. 1 floral perfume, bergamot, orange, rotten tangerine, transformed malt, kumquat, raisin cupcake with cup of cream, woody, dusty, malty
Over time, floral perfumes give way to pleasant woodiness and patchouli.
    • Taste
      Barberry! There are also perfumes.
Sweet kumquat, buttery, unusual, some chemistry like Buble gum, citrus, ginger burning, fennel, orange, almond, walnut shell bitterness, woody, prunes
      Sweetness 7.5 out of 10
    • Finish
Barberry, bitter fruity and tannic, astringent, slightly dry

Mirabelle plums, dried apricots and peaches. Fresh in the glass it has a slight undertone of varnish. After a while, a slightly grassy note appears
    • Taste
      88 88
Very slightly astringent to start with, then it becomes deliciously sweet
    • Finish

The finish is not particularly long but pleasant

Superb estery-fruity. Black currents, red apples, peach, nectarine and (with a lil bit of time) orange. Good maltiness. Leathers. The acidity from oxidised wine can also be found
    • Taste
      86 86
Prunes opens up in the mouths. Chewing brings out a LOT of cream. Buiscuity.
Starts rather bland, but gets sweeter along with drinking. This is followed by mild acidity on the tongue. Mild oak bitterness. Milky. Medium body, rather round.
    • Finish
      85 85
      Vanilla and cream last long

Serious mature whisky and at the same time playful wine due to 18-month additional aging in Australian Shiraz barrels. Very good, but the wine component seemed excessive to me.
    • Nose
Meets with shades of young foliage, white grapes, light raisins, croissant and wine. Behind them hides the tones of marmalade and Buratino soda.
    • Taste
White grapes, wine note, apricot jam, fresh pastries and ringing tannins.
    • Finish
Sufficiently long-lasting, astringent, wine-like, repeating the taste palette.

    Crusade

I was very much impressed with the first Teeling in this Renaissance series, that was finished on Madeira casks. I called it Irish glühwein. The second one in the series got a finish on Australian Shiraz casks, a wine from a grape variety that was brought from the Middle East to France during the Crusades, but I digress. This sounds equally interesting.

Outstanding notes on tropical fruit in a stew (pineapple, mango, banana, strawberry) with a hint of bubble gum. OMG, I am in love! I can smell this for days. Candy-like, sure, but that does not bother me in the slightest.

On the palate the influence of the Shiraz casks is very clear, but at no point does it dominate. The Teeling DNA remains intact and is beautifully flanked by tropical sweet fruit with a soft spiciness. Even the fact that it is bottled at ‘only’ 46% is a non-issue. That balance is fine, just like the body of this beautiful malt.

    Long, sweet, spicy, warm finish.

Hallelujah, I have to get me a bottle of this. You would start a crusade for less. Around 130 EUR only. No brainer! Thank you, Benny.

18 years in Bourbon casks, 18 months in Aussie Shiraz casks.
NOSE: Oh, winey, almondy and marzipany opening. Then manuka and heather honey, red fruits, dried fennel, aniseed, strawberry bubble gum, perfume, camphor, cinnamon, lemon peel. Keeps evolving. (88p).
TASTE: Red wine and spices in the arrival. On the mid palate camphor, herbal honey, lemon, cranberries. (87p).
FINISH: Camphor drops, honey, a little wood spice. Medium long (85p).
OVERALL: Complex - almost to confusion. But interesting. And good. Total score 87 (86) points.

Mango candy for a few seconds. Mandarin orange zest, pineapple, dried prune, caramel, walnut. Sweet orange after breathing. Oak from the side. Sour sherry from the bottom.
      Very orange oriented nosing
    • Taste

Rich orange jam, a bit of mango candy, lasted for almost 5s. The it gets oily, not spiciness at all, sweetness dropping => left with citrus zest.
      honey mango tea

Some mango aftertaste. Citrus zest but mostly woody note, it turns into cinnamon and black tea aftertaste with tiny bit of honey, eventually becomes wood bitter

A rather delicious and fruity single malt. Very well balanced too; the Shiraz cask finish is quite noticeable but it never takes over. It just does seem to work really well here. Really nice.
    • Nose
Very fruity. Blueberries and red berries. Plums. Honey. Then this is followed by a tropical note with mostly pineapple and peach. Oranges too. Later also caramel.
    • Taste
Blueberries again. Caramel fudge. Honey. A sour note from lemons and gooseberries, which is taken over by a sweetness from sweet cherries and strawberries. Slightly spicy, with mostly black pepper and cinnamon. Somewhat oaky too, but rather in the background.
    • Finish
Mid-long to long with black pepper, cinnamon. Blueberries and caramel.

  28. thijs100 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The Teeling 18yo Renaissance Series No. 2 strikes a good balance between ex-bourbon maturation and the finish in wine casks.
    • Nose
Apple sauce, red fruits, clementines and a touch of menthol and chalk, maybe even a whiff of pralines. Then we take a turn into stone fruit territory, mainly peach and nectarine pith.
    • Taste
Lovely fruitiness and I like how well-integrated this is. Never does the wine take over. There's citrus fruits, plenty of strawberry, some mango and then Maraschino cherry, but then some powdered black pepper as well. Maybe not quite as rich as I'd like, but very good still.
    • Finish
Lingering juicy red fruits. Medium in length. Drying. Finally a touch of chocolate.
