Kilchoman Genesis Harvest describes the 1130 day journey from harvesting the harvest of the barley to bottling. Two types of barley were used in the whisky: Publican and Concerto barley grown in mainland UK. After distillation, the smoky Islay malt matured in bourbon casks as well as Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Limited to 3,600 bottles!
    • Nose
Smoke, citrus fruits, berries, sweet, apple, vanilla but the fruity predominates.
    • Taste
Smoke, citrus, sweet, apples, berries, pepper, chocolate and caramel.
    • Finish
Long-lasting finish Smoke, peat, sweet and fruity at the beginning, turning into a spicy dryness.

Interesting on the nose with light fruity aromas, while the taste is aimed purely at the (ashy BBQ) smoke content and the fruity notes are completely lost. Too bad.
But let's see what the other stages will bring.
[86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Maybe ...] - not bad, but still doesn't knock me off my feet. Quite one-dimensional in taste. Where is there sherry influence?
    • Nose
      86 86
at first sight I find the bourbon touch with light fruits / stone fruits of apple, pear, apricot; all emphasize fresh, fruity greenish-yellow in their aroma.
Light phenolic smoke is noticeable, but not obtrusive and concise in the foreground; he goes to me in the direction of the cold ashes from the BBQ grill. But over time it becomes stronger.
Every now and then it stings my nose strongly - maybe. am I a bit overly sensitive or owed to the form of the day (?)
With the sherry influence, I find it a little difficult in the nose; In nuances I may get something of (hazel) nuts, which comes more from the Oloroso corner.
A minimal acidity reminds me of green grapes. Over time, I add some grassy moments (dry grass and hay).
At the same time, a spicy and malty component opens, but it is not really tangible.
    • Taste
      82 82
quite soft in the beginning, slight peppery sharpness, which is well integrated.
Spicy from nutmeg and oak tannins. The phenolic smoke now comes to the fore and for me, in addition to the ashy area, also brings something maritime, salty with it.
The fruity components from the nose take a back seat.
Second Sip: more sharpness comes into play, but remains in the humane area. A bitter note can now be felt, it is most likely to have something like espresso / coffee grounds.
The fruity aromas are unfortunately completely lost on me - the smoke is in the spotlight. The seasoning and spices are also more dominant here than the fruity notes.
I look in vain for the sherry components in the taste - at most again, with imagination - the nutty aromas, that's it.
The heat even temporarily turns into a chilli heat (could also be daytime - post-test necessary).

The ashy, maritime, salty smoke remains for a very long time, it becomes drier. Otherwise all other components can be tracked quite quickly.

maybe the first Kilchoman that I did not really like.. sweetness dominates all other taste notes for me and the nose is weak.. not a bad dram, but i would have preferred a little less sweet bread and a little more oily lemons and smoke

Strawberry and cream candies, greasy smoke that hardly rises into the nose, a little green pepper
    • Taste
      88 88
First sweetness, then peat, here too the strawberry cream and candy, the smoke looks fresh, salt and pepper, specialty
    • Finish
      88 88
Full-bodied, long, sweet and smoky, sherry meets bacon

very nice barrel combination. The aromas change wonderfully between the different types of casks. Very tasty and easy to drink
    • Nose
light smoke, citrus fruits, very mild, berries, slightly sweet, apple, later comes light vanilla in the background but the fruity predominates
    • Taste
maritime smoke, citrus fruits, sweet, fruity with apples and berries, pepper, later some chocolate and caramel, becoming creamy, becoming a little bitter at the end
    • Finish
sweet fruity finish at the beginning, transitioning to a spicy dryness. Again, the smoky notes are more on the smoked ham side.

A promising start to a new series - and after Kilchoman Genesis then Kilchoman Bon Jovi? ;-)
    • Nose
      88 88
Very clean nose, changing between the bourbon and sherry casks. Mildly smoky, with grapes, raspberries, strawberries and lemon peel. Some green apple. The smoke becomes more intense at times and remains at a strong level for a long time.
    • Taste
      87 87
Dry, smoky and slightly grassy appearance. Very tangy, herbs and spices come before a fruity note even had a chance to brush your tongue. Green apple, lemon, cold campfire, smoked ham. Some fennel and camphor, chocolate and caramel.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long and dry finish. Even here still quite spicy, the peat smoke is still powerfully present. Some menthol.

This composition cannot be old yet, because the proportion of 10% Oloroso and 20% PX barrels has only made the color a little darker. The maturation time of the barrels would have really interested me: a little more transparency would have been nice. The phenol content should be somewhere between 25 and 50 ppm. Here, too, we can only speculate, because probably only the portion of Islay barley was malted on the farm. The presentation is otherwise very successful and the result tastes good!
