    • Nose

Nose quite closed at first sight, very earthy. It then opens on iodine, shells, more "oily" notes. Good austerity.
    • Taste
      84 84
Palate a little young, quite bitter, but with a nice peat, ashes, medicinal plants and lots of iodine. Rather oily texture.
    • Finish
      85 85
Easy, slightly sweet, long finish, on peat, medicinal plants and ashes.

It is possibly the best cask strength whisky I have ever had. The toffee notes and the balance of the peat and fruit are exquisite. Please do this a lot more Kilchoman

This Kilchoman Machir Bay was bottled at a strong cask strength as a holiday edition. Even the Islay sheep were given festive hats to celebrate the occasion. Machir Bay is the flagship of the independent distillery. The single malt has a classic maritime and smoky character that is on par with the well-known Islay greats. In addition to ex-bourbon casks, a small amount of Oloroso sherry casks was used.

Had this one in blind tasting, surprisingly friendly and fresh peated whisky. Great value for money for sure.
    • Nose
      88 88
Fresh, fruity and peaty. Candy-like, Haribo, vanilla, sweet smoke. Full scent.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pretty strong, sweet smoke, peat, caramel, a lot of sweetness. Also some salty, maritime notes.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still powerful, sweet smoke, some bitter notes and ash, caramel. Warming in the belly, a tad dry. Quite long finish.

You could light it with a match at room temperature, but you shouldn't do that for no good reason - it's too good for that. The 58.6% vol. Does not burn on the palate! With a little water (between 50% and 55%) you have a lot more to discover ...

Successful, straightforward Islay whisky in strong cask strength. Not highly complex, but you get what you expect.
    • Nose
Herbal, citrus, lots of citrus, strong, grassy peat smoke.
    • Taste
strong, tart, pepper, peat, citrus notes, a bit oily.
    • Finish
The finish is quite hot and peppery, cool alcohol, tart peat with citrus zest.

[May, 2021] It is cold in Europe tonight - so it is the perfect time for an Islay dram and I selected this Kilchoman cask strength edition to warm up...

...which is perfectly suited for this job. The cask strength powers up the anyway nice Machir Bay edition to a warming and joyful dram on cold and rainy nights. This is a good companion to watch the Champions League semi-final (Man City vs. PSG) because its simple profile does not require any detailed explorations but it is very delicious to sip in such a setting - exactly what is whisky made for (in the first place).
    • Nose
      86 86
The colour is pale straw and the nose offers a young and nice Islay profile which reminds me a little of the 8-years old Lagavulin with strong peaty aromas in a powerful barley juice setting. The wood is perfect to provide a firm backbone but it does not try to dominate, just the way I like it. There is nothing special about this nose, nonetheless I enjoy to sniff it tonight (because it indicates what happens next)...
    • Taste
      87 87
...and this is a warming feeling running all through my body right after the first sip. Yes, this is what Islay drams are made for - to keep you warm when it is nasty outside. The taste is simple but works perfectly with the holy Islay trinity of peat, malt and wood in good balance. No flaw or off-note and no highlights either that scream for an exploration, there is just pleasure on my tongue. So I lean back, relax and enjoy.
    • Finish
      87 87
The dram arrives powerful and warming on the palate with a nicely coating texture which covers all of my mouth instantly. The finish is of medium length and adds no new impressions, it just extends the nice taste for minutes. Again there are no distracting bitter or drying moments. Water turns both nose and taste smoother, now it tastes almost like the standard Machir Bay editions. Guess what - I prefer this powerful and untamed cask strength version neat tonight.

a positive surprise - weird and profound
    • Nose
      87 87
clear menthol, chlorinated swimming pool, gaseous grass silo, sweet smoke, green apples - with water: the grass turns into wet hay, some cowshed, lime peel
    • Taste
      88 88
Fresh cut grass, menthol and liquorice, green plums in the smokehouse, green groats, glacier sweets, in the background a bit of sticky mold
    • Finish
      87 87
fruity and dry with a long smoke tail

Just great! Everyday life and for special occasions! Finish leaves something to be desired, otherwise great!
    • Nose
      90 90
Orange, plum, butteriness, caramel, mild smoke, complex, vanilla, peach, distant hints of pineapple, even more than peach.
    • Taste
      91 91
Saltiness, very round, buttery, sweet, in many ways different from the aroma. No alcohol.
    • Finish
      83 83
Rather short, the smoke stays the longest. Most beautiful when swallowing.

Likes it best with a few drops of water to get around 53 to 55%. Very tasty Kilchoman.
    • Nose
      87 87
Dry, typical Kilchoman peat smoke, not too strong. With citrus and orange peel. Salty sea water breeze. Perfume. Some honey, vanilla and menthol.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily. Peat smoke, the nose is reflected on the palate, with a little white pepper. Lemon juice is dominant.
    • Finish
      88 88
Peat smoke and the fruit notes, along with young wood and pepper, remain. Gets dry. Medium to long.

A nice upward feel to the normal Machir bay. It pales in comparison to the UK tour Machir bay cask strengths of years ago though. No matter, the price for these bottles is very very affordably priced. The finishing pales in comparison to the normal 46% though, but, the scent on the nose is superb.

    Ooh yes !!!!

    Islay pure, cant be islayier.

Cold burnt ashes dipped in honey with a bit of lemon juice.

Kilchoman and islay at its best. A reference whisky.

  28. thijs100 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A cracking whisky with a complexity on the palate that's almost unexpected.
    • Nose
Sweet notes of icing sugar and a touch of barbecue smoke. Some smoked barley husks, vanilla essence and a few floral touches as well. Finally some Port stewed pears as well. Quite elegant and composed.
    • Taste
A creamy mouthfeel and sweet arrival followed by a barrage of earthy smoke, chili peppers and white pepper. It's powerful alright. Somewhat drying, but also notes of orange and milk chocolate. Finally some touches of hay and straw.
    • Finish
A lingering, earthy smokiness and a gentle maltiness. Finally a whisper of red apple skin.

Steam! Immediately afterwards malty sweet, lemon zest and vanilla, subtle menthol note, a little coconut and somehow I also have cookie dough
    • Taste
      88 88
Strong, charcoal and milk chocolate, black pepper, citrus fruits, again vanilla, strongly stimulating salivation.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-length and dry, becomes increasingly smoky, somehow herbaceous and very warming

Icing sugar ...... a little rubber ... some dry clean smoke with the sweetness
    Nose .. not so expressive
Long development of above on the palate
As a fan of Machir Bay this is a real treat compared with the standard.
Not so varied/complex in range of flavours but intense and dangerously drinkable at cask strength.

  31. DenverbroncosDuke scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Very different to the normal Kilchoman Machir Bay in drinking strength, much more stable and smoky-peaty, much more intense (well, that's no wonder), more coastal aroma
    • Nose
      85 85
Medium smokiness, ripe or sweet pears, very creamy and clean, coastal aroma, clear citrus fruits.
    • Taste
      82 82
Significant saltiness and very peaty with clear goat barn sounds, classic smoke as often with Kilchoman, strong sweetness, barley malt, black pepper.
    • Finish
      81 81
Very malty barley with a good spiciness of black pepper, again goat stable, good length, very warming with a little lemon.

N: What a lovely sweet nose! On the one hand there´s the sweet vanilla from the bourbon casks and on the other, sligthly more decent and faint, the dark, sweet plums from the sherry cask. It´s like you could intentionally combine just the best aspects from both casks. Amazing!

M: Smoke! Wow, no idea how I couldn´t notice it before (it´s my first peated whisky of the evening) in the nose, but wow. Now it´s there, completly dominant, nose and mouth. (It´s been ages that I had the regular Machir Bay but this cask strength just fits perfectly.) The sweetness is now gone, replaced by white and black pepper. It´s rather spicy with a dry note. My saliva glands immediately go into overdrive, it´s just incredible

F: Overall the finish is somewhere between medium long and long. Light bourbon notes combined with a very fine "ashyness", it just leaves you wanting more.

So, to resume, this is a very well selected bottling. With roughly below 60€, it´s absolutely incredibly well priced. So amazing bang for buck! Get it, try it, enjoy it. I´m gonna have some fun with this one. (it is slightly one-dimensional though. I don´t mind it, considering the price, but that could have boosted to rating a little more)

A very nice addition to the standard Machir Bay diluted down to 46%. Even looks a little more mature and older than his little brother.
    • Nose
      87 87
Flowery and fruity, with a hint of peat smoke. Lavender flowers, honey, vanilla, white chocolate. Freshly squeezed lemon juice, roasted orange peel, green leaves, wet meadow.
    • Taste
      87 87
Sweet and spicy start, not too strong. Slightly dry with whole milk chocolate, milk coffee, caramel, honey, vanilla, lemon peel zest. Fine peat smoke, sawdust.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length, dry, increasingly smoky. Milk coffee, cocoa powder, almond slivers, rhubarb compote.

  35. Captain Teague scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Nose quite good taste easy and finish medium to long...
Nose: of course at first the same impression as the normal machir bay ( Citrus, Vanilla, fresh oak, a bit of Pina colada (which I don't remember having in the standard) and bonfire smoke, -

taste: nice oily consistency in the mouth
sweet and lingering holds the impression from the nose...

Finish: sweet then more pepper/ ginger notes mixed with smoke/ cold ash and some menthol notes...

the finish compared to the standard finish longer with more development...

A nice whisky one to play with ...takes water quite well .
    ...really good 89
