Whisky Reviews for Strathisla 1970 GM

9 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 90.90 points

  1. sagara-kun scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

    Superb Strathisla.

Nothing extravagant or original, but an explosion of aromas in the mouth really welcome and delicious.

    A sherry very well built.

edit 10/08/2018: more strawberry on the nose, and much more tertiary on the palate (musk, undergrowth, earth) and big chocolate. Less wooded. Finish very chocolatey.
    • Nose
      A first of magnificent sherry.

Light chocolate, fruit, currant, blackberry candy. A touch of exoticism at times without it predominating.

We feel a little dry wood without the woody side being invasive. A bit of tobacco.
    • Taste
      Succulent.

Fruit bomb. Red mainly and always a little passion fruit. Fruity sweetness is very present.

It's very fresh and powerful for 45%.

The woody is revealed at the end of the mouth with leather and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Chocolate and sweet finish. On the cinnamon. The fruity remains on the palate.Legère apreté.

Nose on glue, varnish, precious wood. In the mouth the coffee predominates, chocolate, berries, it is very very classy and the finish is endless

A fresh sherry bomb, a typical example of this kind of old styles.
    • Nose
Rich sherry, little smoky, Chinese Fermented bean curd, fresh almonds behind, nutty, minty, burned sugar, bitter herbs
    • Taste
Honey mints, citrus, rubber, a little bit woody, strong sherry flavor, still got some fermented tastes
    • Finish
      Dark chocolate, very sherried, buttery

  4. Ivynor scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Refined whisky, a superb sherry. Too bad the final is slightly below.
    90 + / 91 -
    • Nose
Big scale for 45%, varnish, very dark chocolate, candied orange, old furniture, cooked plum. Elegant set, well melted
    • Taste
very elegant always, creamy text, with dark chocolate, coffee, varnish, old furniture, candied plum, some leather. Sweet set just right
    • Finish
Good but a bit below the rest because of the 45%
Chocolate, coffee, wood, citrus zest, a little more oak bitterness and bitter cocoa.

Nose on melted exotic fruits where the pineapple floats, encaustic (turpentine) and a dusty tip. We find the pineapple in a wide mouth where the wood is clear but well controlled. There is also coffee. In the finish, wood and pineapple give way to dark chocolate. Very good.

amber color, very nice well-marked sherry nose with chocolate, coffee, some varnish, precious woods, spices, leather, red fruits and some candied oranges. Mouth quite sweet at 45% but with a good size, thick texture, not dry at all, chocolate, still red fruit and old furniture. Long finish without being exceptional, a little more spicy, not too woody. Compared to the 1970-2011 G & M 43% it seems less woody with more red fruits, more gluttony, a little less marked by the sherry cask, but perhaps a little less long. Excellent old Speysider, quite the profile I love.

  8. Dede scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Mouth a bit stiff, too bad.
    • Nose
Sophisticated, elegant Sherry. Orange marmalade, light curry, varnish, rancio, precious wood.
    • Taste
A little steep, woody, pronounced tannic bitterness. Slightly sulfur, with lots of cocoa and candied orange.
    • Finish
      Long, no astringency.

  9. Malt Hans scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Spicy and fruity aroma, toffee, cardamom,
nutmeg, orange peel, figs, coffee beans, gooseberries, polished leather
and vanilla. Medium sweet taste, apple peel, camphor, ginger, pepper,
bitter herbs, dark chocolate and strong tea. Long, spicy, fruity and
    herbal end.
