If you frolic in the garden of eccentrics and oddballs, then Säntis Malt Dreifaltigkeit is an obvious 'must try'. Heavily peated and matured in old beer casks, this Swiss obscurity would scare off any vegetarian. An onslaught of smoky, meaty and fatty aromas dominates the nose, ranging from bacon and BBQ sauce to kippers and burned matches. On the palate, notes of hops, Guinness and bitter herbs wrestle with the thick peat blanket. Salmiak, Jamón and a touch of soap mark the intense aftertaste. A unique flavor bomb that you will either love or hate.

Do not worry, I do not want to add a new version of the well-known ingredients (further smoldering campfire, burnt caramel, cough syrup, Metwurst). On the other hand, I can still defend my grading given a few years ago today - after tasting it again - with a clear conscience: Of course one can not and may not like this special taste. But this drop was quite pioneering at that time in Switzerland and elsewhere for the German-speaking countries, as not every schnapps distiller had to have any whisky - often too young and too expensive thrown on the market - in the assortment. This "Trinity" was innovative, with an interesting Fassreifung. And can still be assessed as unique, exciting and really rounded today.

Smell: peat, a raw edge (stole?), Something fruity gum-like that I also always smell / taste in Lagavulin, smoked meat, spicy, sherry influences.

Taste: a nice mouth full of smoke, peppery, also that chewy, spicy (curry), licorice / salmiak.

Finish: definitely dribbling further away, with that one-bit-strange-but-sure-well-tasty spicy, also something like salmiak / licorice.

There is some smoke, some malty beer and hop. I also found some honey and nutty tones.

Yet, nose and mouth do not fall together. There are prickly smoky notes at first, but then there is this Dutch salty liquorice... Well, I like liquorice, I like smoky whiskies, but in fact the combination in this dram, does not go together, not at all! Trinity? There is nothing heavenly in it at all.

The prickly mouth does not make it a pleasant dram! Smoke, salty liquorice.

Well, it stays on palate, in your mouth, it does for some time, do I like it? Not really!

All in all, the worst whisky I've tasted so far. Pleasant nose, tasteless completely off.

Bacon, bacon, bacon - smoked. Malt, a slight sweetness. Intense and unbalanced.
    • Taste
      40 40
Hot in the start, then malt and beer notes. The bacon quickly superimposed everything else.
    • Finish
      40 40
      Bitter, greasy and unpleasant.

Not sublime, drinkable without negative points but also no exaggerated positivity. Something above a simple daily dram.
