Sherry lovers will gravitate to the Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 19 Years, and rightfully so.
    • Nose
A dry, chalky, mineral kind of sherry influence. Quite earthy indeed with notes of tobacco leaves the highlight, but also sultanas, raisins and chocolate truffles. Finally some strawberry syrup, soy sauce and aceto balsamico.
    • Taste
A little juicier and fruitier than expected, with a lovely gentle spiciness and soft tannins. Raw sugar, chili dark chocolate, leather and just a touch of cherry. Somewhat dunnage-y.
    • Finish
Tingly spices, milk chocolate and dried fruits. Medium in length.

    Modest

Mark Watt sure knows how to make an entrance with Watt Whisky. Have you seen those eclectically packaged whisky’s in the Electric Coo series? Today I try one of his first releases, a 19 years old blended malt that matured on a sherry butt.

Ooh, surprisingly mineral nose. Pebbles, chalk, gyproc and tobacco leaves. After a few moments some cherries and raisins kick in, with a drop of balsamic vinegar on top. Very modest, but very nice. If you would insist, I’d dare say some Macallan was involved.

Oily on the palate, with an immediate prickle of both the alcohol and some black pepper. Then an explosion of cherry juice, candied sugar and some leather. Stout? Hint of chocolate, albeit in the background. Less subtle than the nose suggested. Juicy yet mildly drying.

The medium long finish offers a whole plethora of dried fruit – dades, raisins – before the tannins turn your mouth completely dry.

It’s almost impossible not to like this. A typical Christmas dram. Around 115 EUR, but you might be hard pressed to find it now.

    From Whiskyfun,

Blended Malt 19 yo 2001/2020 (44.9%, Watt Whisky, sherry butt, 630 bottles)
I’m extremely happy to see Kate and Mark doing their own thing, the whisky world needs more anti-nonsense, pro-fun people. Colour: amber. Nose: a style of sherry I really enjoy, that is to say lean, clean and rather leafy and mineral. Given time to open it develops some nutty aromas, praline, milk chocolate and rolling tobacco while also retaining these highly pleasurable mulchy, earthy tones. Mouth: lovely arrival, full, soft, darkly fruity sherry. Lots of sultanas, fig jam, raisins, tobacco and some slightly mushroomy vibes. Perhaps a wee dollop of treacle as well, but globally it remains elegantly drying. Finish: good length, densely earthy, getting richer and more towards figs, tobacco, dunnage and walnuts. Comments: If you’d handed me this blind and said an old Glendronach 15yo from the 1990s I’m not sure I’d have blinked even once. Superbly fresh, clean and vivid sherry with an old school accent. Recommended!
