Preliminary information on my award of points:
I rate my Whisky's Privat on a scale of ten
    ( XX.X of 10.0 )!

    Dangerously sweet stuff!!
    • Nose
Ultra sweet, light fruits. Light, pleasant wood note. Lots of vanilla. Honey.
Later rich juicy oranges. A tart touch of grapefruit. A touch of mint.
    • Taste
Strong but creamy at the start. Damn cute again. Nevertheless, there is also a lot of spice.
Oak, honey, juicy oranges. In the mouth a little more acid on the palate than before in the nose.
    • Finish
Long. Lots of oak, pepper, oranges. Dry acidic.

Conclusion: perfect mix of fruit, wood and sweetness. In addition this very light cinnamon sharpness. It's so close to the perfectly refreshing and balanced whisky.
    • Nose
Nose: It starts with an apricot tree in a flower meadow, then cools the nose a bit. Very comfortable on a hot summer day. Now there is some cinnamon and cloves in the background, which are accompanied by some herbal honey
    • Taste
Mouth: light on the tongue, fruity and yet slightly chocolaty. Then, very lightly, comes some cedar wood. A pleasant fruity sweetness fills the whole mouth
    • Finish
Finish: a very fruity sweet taste remains in the mouth. Very light cinnamon that comes along on an apricot sorbet. The water pools in the mouth and calls for more.

A tale of cake? It's a tale of ache.
    • Nose
      76 76
Fragrance plastic bag, rubber gloves, washing powder, it was as artificial as it could get and for a moment smelled like an aisle in the supermarket where they sell toiletries. Tortoise jelly, dried Chinese herbs
    • Taste
      71 71
Slightly peppery with a full mouth of sweetener, and resin, surrounded by the fragrance plastic bag and washing powder aromas from the nosing.
    • Finish
      70 70
The artificial tastes carried over, the bright spot if I have to name one might be the consistency, thank God I didn't buy a bottle.

    Tasting Notes

Nose: First, one notices the fruit-laden scent of Marsala. This is followed by notes of juicy oranges, creamy caramel, sweet lavender honey and lovely rose.
Palate: Sweet nut flavors meet crunchy Brazil nuts, sticky toffee, aromatic cocoa, some barley malt and a hint of zesty red pepper.
Finish: The silky smooth, almost endless finale is determined by brown sugar, exotic ginger root, warming cinnamon and spicy cloves.

Glenmorangie 'A Tale of Cake' reflects the dearest memories of whiskymaker Dr. Bill, mostly related to cake. He decided to capture those magical memories by giving his favorite Glenmorangie a special finish in the Tokaji Dessert Wine Barrel. As the name suggests, this whisky tastes particularly good with a piece of cake.
    • Nose
Very intense, sweet, banana, pineapple, maybe a little orange and especially vanilla and honey.
    • Taste
Lemon cake, honey, spicy, vanilla and caramel, herbs, citrus fruits, some nuts come later combined with the grain notes. Very slightly sweet.
    • Finish
Long lasting, mainly the vanilla and banana notes remain.

Interesting, distinctive malt. It really smells like various kind of cakes and tastes super sweet. I would not pay more than 70€ for a bottle though. Slightly overpriced
    • Nose
Very gentle, fresh pineapple, roasted nuts, a little like “Bienenstich” combined with (over)ripe fruits
    • Taste
Honeyish sweetness, predominately pears and very ripe apricots with a little oak and mint.
    • Finish
      Short and sweet

Simply satisfying! The classic Glenmorangie is usually light-bodied with sweet orange peels and pineapples. The Cake expression retains an element of the classic taste profile, but is so much heavier and bolder in its flavour – pouring a layer of rich white chocolate, oak and a deliberate spiciness that rivals many sherry cask whiskies.

I certainly did not expect a strong-flavoured and rich whisky from Glenmorangie. And while this expression is about 10 years old, there is unusual complexity in this expression that is generally found in much older Glenmorangies. A very welcome surprise!

    • Nose
      In the glass, rich copper.

On the nose, brilliant aroma. A familiar classic Glenmorangie character, yet the bouquet is so much more fragrant and heavier than the typical product from the distillery. This opens with bright and sweet notes of tangerines, honey, crème brulee and vanilla, before leading into thicker and richer notes of white chocolate, caramel, apricots and thick slices of 7D dried mango. There is also much bolder spiciness than the usual Glenmorangie. The spice subsides after 30 seconds or so, and the aroma turns towards a slightly more malty, yeasty and earthy character that is reminiscent of bread crust on a buttery glazed bun. There is so much vanilla sweetness and fruitiness layered over by darker notes with a surprising amount of depth. A sweet, rich and complex bouquet uncommon to casks that are simply bourbon-matured.
    • Taste
On the palate, this is one of the most heavy-bodied Glenmorangies you would have tried. Entry is smooth and rich, with so much sweet fruity notes of honey, vanilla, apricots, mango and buttery pound cake. The texture is viscous and satisfying with the liquid coating one’s tongue. The flavours develop and open to slightly darker notes of toffee and caramelised white chocolate studded with candied orange. Trace amounts of roasted nuts and almonds. A tinge of grapeskin dryness with a moderate amount of fragrant oak and tannins. As the whisky goes down your throat, a substantial amount of mint and spice develops on the back palate- a dusting of star anise flakes and ground cinnamon.
    • Finish
The finish is moderately long with a lingering sweetness of honey, orange peel, star anise flakes and a faint aroma of pineapple.

Interesting, basically chic bottling that just seems too unbalanced to me at the back. Kind of a problem that I have with Glenmorangie in general. Here I would also be afraid that after a while open in the cupboard (as with Glenmo I have often seen it before) it would simply come across as crisp and sharp. Maybe it's me, but I haven't gotten to grips with the distillery yet.

The Tale of Cake is a nice, really sweet dessert malt.

    Notin 'to be mad about.
    • Nose
      86 86
It flows sweetly from the glass immediately. Marzipan, chocolate and a hint of jellied fruit show up. In addition, a slightly fresh note of wood and alcohol. Sweet and fruity, somehow “dry” looking. Maybe a bit monotonous, but otherwise I like it.
    • Taste
      85 85
Extremely cute, almost a tick over it. Slight orange note, heavily syruped berries, marzipan, sweet nuts (hazelnut cream). Very soft. Lies almost flat on the tongue. Very little flavor as a counterpart. Again, pretty monotonous. But not bad!
    • Finish
      82 82
Here you notice the (possibly) young / younger age. Quite flat, very unspectacular, unfortunately a bit bippy, even a touch metallic. Afterwards the very (almost exaggerated) sweet and here even artificial notes. Not particularly sparkling. Definitely better. I especially don't like the artificial.

At first we were afraid it would be too sweet, but a perfectly integrated acidity and fine oak as a complement make it very round and yet aromatic.
    • Nose
Cotton candy on which you pour light blossom honey, apricot jelly, lemon sorbet, candied ginger and soft peanuts, lots of vanilla and light toffee of course, almonds, with time a real cream cake emerges
    • Taste
Nice acidity as a direct contrast to the sweetness, apricot still young and fresh, fresh ginger, blossom honey, tick of green apple and lemon peel and grass, peach, buttery, a little yogurt, powdered sugar, toffee, subtle oak
    • Finish
Ginger, camphor, green apple, peach, short to medium length, tick oak and malt

At first a bit closed in the nose, after a few minutes the fruity sweetness comes, and then I'm with a sheet cake with pineapple or peaches. The association works. Unfortunately, the nose is still cautious. No cake in the face.
The taste and finish follow seamlessly, but now even more intense.
I couldn't see any improvement with water.

In the nose it lives up to its name. In fact, it smells of dough fresh from the oven. But there is also a sweetness of grapes, very pleasant. I taste it stays on the sweet side, but some bitter aromas join in with it (barrel influence?). In the finish, the 46% do him good, and something stays in the mouth. Yes, I don't think that's bad whisky, knows how to please.

again a really good nose on an average rest. That seems to be my Glenmorangie curse. A nice funky whisky that unfortunately only costs twice what it should cost ...
    • Nose
It's really sweet on the nose, similar to a liqueur, I'm thinking of peach liqueur, some vanilla extract, you can actually have the idea of a sweet cake batter. Amazing, but also kind of delicious. The nose is just as sweet with water, I think there are a few more spicy wine notes and something like aniseed.
    • Taste
Surprisingly dry and also a little bit sour in the mouth. The wine and the barrel clearly show their predominance. There is little cake and sweetness, especially the sour aromas are a little exhausting, but also make the malt interesting. With water: In the mouth it becomes a little sweeter, it actually benefits a little, because the sour taste disappears, but a slightly spicy, peppery note is added and the mouth does not become thinner despite the water. But he's not that cute either. The nose is already the namesake.
    • Finish
bitter oak and sour fruit notes are also present here, a few spices, hardly a hint of sweetness. The finish is a bit flat though, unfortunately. The finish with water unfortunately also shows that the whisky is not that old.

Again we are on the way with sweets. Memories of milk bars come up. With vanilla and pineapple. Coconut and honey are also included.

And so it goes on: pineapple and coconut. Then comes cocoa butter and with it white chocolate. The fruits then go towards the mango. The whole thing is always connected by honey notes.

I got to stop getting rope a doped. The packaging is psychodelic and spot on, the whisky is good, but far from the level of the packaging. It does have pineapple and vanilla notes, also bitter oak and light spice with malt. It’s unique. Good for them trying to stand out as their line up is a tad drab to look at.

Not as sweet as I expected, malt, yes I do get reminded a tad of a pineapple upside down cake (that really is a stretch mixed with the power of persuasion), it’s sugary with vanilla and tropical fruits is more accurate. It does have a good malt undertone and some oak char/balanced spices

Honestly not a big fan of Glenmorangie, there profile is a bit to soft for my taste, i find them to be a bit boring from time to time. On the other hand I never have any off notes in them, always well made but perhaps without taking any risks. This whisky is a gentle mellow dram that a nice everyday dram, but in this price range I expect something more exciting, but once again ... this is totally personal taste.

A slight hint of vanilla, cane sugar and some yellow fruits like pineapple and grapes but honestly the nose seems to weak for me to detect something more. On the nose this would not catch my attention. A slight drop of water reveals some clementines and peaches. Not a big wow ...
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is a lot better than the nose. Some pastry, vanilla, pineapple and kiwi come to mind first. Smoothness and mellowness are keywords here. Beyond that soft layer is a gentle peppery note and even a whiff of nutmeg.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium finish. The finish makes me understand why it is a tale of cake. Something dry but buttery stays in the mouth. After some time theres a strange peppermint flavour that develops in the mouth, didn't see that coming ..

    Yep... cake.

Nose: Definitely a fruity cake. One review said pineapple upside down cake and I can't unsmell that kind of cake now. Crystallized sugar.

Palate: The sweet fruitiness gives way to a simple sponge cake. Getting some bitter notes as well. It's like a bitter lemon cake.

Finish: A hint of coolness - mint & menthol - followed by the aftertaste of a lightly sweetened sponge cake.

Overall: Yep, it's the cakiest whisky I've ever had. A very enjoyable dram. All that said, I wish there was just a little more strength to it.

    ????: light gold
????: two worlds fighting for domination: crispness and a trichle of sharpness, slightly scratchy notes, and on the other hand, somewhere trying to reach warm sweet cookie and chocolate notes. Basically tannic-bourbon warm-sweet atmosphere and no effect from Tokaj's search ...
????: sweet, bourbon, slightly cookie-cutter, a bit chocolatey, peppery, not too long on the tongue,

The nose is very sweet and pleasant, fits perfectly into the characteristics of Glenmorangie, here it also scores. On the palate it is relatively unspectacular, even if the barrel influence of the Tokaj is noticeable - 11/14/2020

Yes, it is very sweet, syrupy, light fruits, star fruit, pineapple, vanilla, powdered sugar, lime, it comes out like a perfume but with time in the gals it becomes creamier and sweeter

Interesting. Takes longer to develop in the glass. Tasted with a piece of cake;)
The first sip was quite thin, with the second you really thought you could taste pineapple and other fruits, with the third sherry aromas came through, but I don't know where they should come from.
Overall an exciting whisky, but no "WOW !!" ...

Definitely bright fruits. I would say apricots, mandarins and also pineapples and mirabelle plums. Otherwise something like roses or something like that will come through. Very pleasant. Even fruity and better with water.

Not as fruity as the smell. Is a little drier and bitter and then comes the sweet one. It tastes like sweet wine and has yellow fruits but also a portion of oak and youth. But it really gets a lot better with water. The dry and young go away and it becomes really round and sweet. My tip, drink it with water. Without water I would at least. Subtract 5 points.

I don't really understand the cake comparison. I don't get anything out of this that could have anything to do with pie or cake.

A tale of fruits would have been a better name. Because this dram is super fruity with mainly stone fruit flavors in the foreground.

It is certainly not a high flyer. A great dram.
    • Nose
Immediately clear dessert wine. Furthermore, pineapple, peach, clear influences from a bourbon barrel, vanilla, pear, stone fruit and some yellow fruit.
    • Taste
Some pepper and herbs like cloves. Mint, a bit less fruity than the nose suggests. Wood, a bitterness from an orange peel and sometimes a bit metallic. Then it seems that this is still a fairly young whisky. But the taste of peach has the upper hand for me.
    • Finish
The aftertaste can actually be called short unfortunately. A little bit of bitterness, some peach, metal and a pinch of pepper.

"A tale of Cake" an interesting name for a single malt whisky!

The hype surrounding “A Tale of Cake” should have been relatively high in advance and the finish with the Tokaji Dessert Wine Barrels also made the Glenmorangie very interesting for me, as Tokaji Casks were completely unknown to me.
Since I'm more at home in the heavily peated and high AVB corner, I was a bit skeptical, but still the anticipation for the first sip was relatively great. Most of the time, the expectations are unfortunately not met, which surprisingly I cannot say about “A Tale of Cake”. Whether it really resembles a cake is up to you, but I think that it is an excellent sweet single malt and above all shows once again how multifaceted whisky production can be.
All in all, an extremely successful project that is also very fair in terms of price.

First of all, find the malt top, Glenmorangie delivers what the marketing promises. That's why I don't think the whisky is overpriced (at € 85). The packaging is also really awesome. But I agree with many that the finish could be a little better.

It was not the childhood memories of the “Director of Whisky Creation”, nor was it the design of the bottle, nor was it the NAS, nor was it the price called up, which drove me to buy the bottle. Rather the Tokaji Dessert Wine Cask finish in connection with the official tasting notes such as lush, sweet and complex with honey, white chocolate and fruits with a hint of mint.

    1. Tasting Friday
In the nose the aromas of sweet wine, fruity-light notes, no alcohol, no tingling, nice nose, smooth and supple.
Fruity aromas remain, not quite as sweet as expected, it appears flat and then becomes drier, there is a lack of variety and depth. Bitterness now arises, is accompanied by disturbing impressions of the mint and white pepper, which I initially attach to a rather youthful bottling. Disappointing and overpriced at first glance.

    2. Tasting then on the Sunday before lunch, no breakfast.
Nose almost unchanged, still really pleasant. The taste today lacks the annoying notes of fresh mint or white pepper, instead dark honey is added, brown, almost too dark butter, has a much more harmonious effect overall, the bitterness is now more accompanying and supportive than disturbing.
As a dessert for the tiramisu, it is not so noticeable with its sweetness, the fruity bitterness sets a good counterpoint to the sweetness of the tiramisus.

For me, it's definitely a malt for before a meal as an aperitif or actually to accompany a dessert. It comes out very smooth, fruity, slightly buttery with a subtle bitterness and overcomes the youth of the bottling that I think is there. The bottom line is that it fits, in terms of points I would settle it at 86/87, but the 88 € that is called up are unfortunately rather overpriced for me.

It really awakens the associations with cakes.
    • Nose
      90 90
A lot of vanilla, plus dough, hints of lighter fruits (pineapple, maybe pear) and some sour cherry.
    • Taste
      91 91
Maybe it's because of the campaign that went with it, but I have the first sip in my mouth and immediately think of a café in Reykjavik where I had a delicious piece of cake in 2016. Against the background that it arouses such associations of long-forgotten moments, it is really pleasant.

I also have a pleasant maltiness that makes it quite full-bodied. In terms of spices, a fresh mint is quite present, but - so my impression - a metallic youth flows into it.
    • Finish
      87 87
It is precisely the metallic youth that ultimately remains in the overall very flat finish. That is really a shame. If the cake theme, which is really wonderfully integrated into the nose and taste, also lingered in the finish in the mouth, that would definitely be a 90+ candidate. However, for me personally it stays under the "magical limit" because of the weak and almost unpleasant finish (metallic youth and mint are the only thing that remains of all the cake and sweetness).

Decent Glenmorangie, different from what I expected. The Tokaj notes are very dominant, the sweet white wine almost pearls on the tongue. There are also buttery, slightly burnt pastry notes. Some mint and white pepper. I like that in teamwork, but it will certainly polarize people. Full understanding who does not like the 'experiment'. In addition, opaque and certainly overpriced, you don't have to be a prophet.
Interesting and unusual whisky that you should at least try

  90. LukasJakubDrabek scored this whisky 81 points Shoplink Moderator

A sample arrived at the Whisky Bar that doesn't exist, where I work, today, so I couldn't resist and tasted it. If you like - sometimes even extremely - sweet whisky (which Glenmorangie definitely can do), you will probably enjoy this one as well. In any case, that sweet impression is dispelled by a strange bitterness, which is probably the result of a finish in barrels of Tokaj wine. Rather a disappointment for me.
    (Evaluated on a sample basis.)
