Whisky Reviews for Glen Spey 1988 MBl

Not a bad buy, a really pleasant malt at a very fair price. Not a complexity monster, but a wonderful drinking painting without any real weakness. For 165 € absolute buy recommendation.
    • Nose
Set age, you can feel that directly. Strong wood aromas and sweet fruit notes alternate. Dry oak, juicy oranges. Delicate vanilla, dark honey and the smell of stale coffee powder. Not incredibly complex, but very pleasant.
    • Taste
Round and mild, which is certainly due to the (residual) alcohol strength of 43.8%. The oak can be felt for a very short time and I was afraid that it would now be dominated too much by the oak barrel and the tannins. But instead, a really nice fruit sweetness sets in, which clearly dominates. Green grapes, some orange, honey. This sweetness lingers all the time - very pleasant.
    • Finish
Long and very balanced. The malt literally glides down your throat, beautifully oily and mild. Nice interplay of tart wood aromas and sweet fruit aromas. What remains is no dust-dry mouth, as unfortunately all too often with malts that have been stored for such a long time, but a pleasant mouthfeel - you want "more".

I didn't expect anything and am pleasantly surprised. A really old, heavy and sweet dessert whisky that fans of old single grains should also like.
You could have bought well at the issue price.

Marzipan, coconut, apricot jam, sweet wine, mead, damp cellar, a slight hint of glue.

Pleasant, sweet nose with interesting and age-typical wood glue aromas and a nice Moscatel muff. You have to be in the mood for it, but then there's not much to complain about. More exciting than many other and "more ordinary" strong wine finishes.
    • Taste
      88 88
Less extraordinary than the nose, but quite powerful and intense despite the "only" 43.8 percent. At first cautious and only mild and amorphous, fruity-sour, but from the middle the aromas described above repeat from the nose, then there is also honey sweetness and an aromatic herbal note and it suddenly becomes really pleasant.
    • Finish
      87 87
Heavy and very sweet (almost sticky) with a lot of wood and the already mentioned "Moscatelmuff". Don't reinvent the wheel now, but don't disturb the coherent overall picture in any way.

The price was appealing for the key data. But since the whisky industry hasn't had anything to give away for a long time, I was skeptical.
I actually find the nose quite good, even if it could be a bit fuller for the age. But in my mouth it is too one-dimensional. There is no depth.
This is certainly not a bad whisky and would not be an absolute bad buy, but I am not sad about not having a bottle.
    • Nose
Vineyard peach. Glucose. Desiccated coconut, a bit like Ferrero Raffaello. Marzipan. Candied citrus fruits. A change between dusty and fresh wood. Minimally some forest floor. Maybe removes a little wax.
    • Taste
Due to the alcohol content, the start is almost inevitably rather gentle. Much sweetness. Very sweet peach iced tea. Forest honey. Fruit sweetness. Then the oak sets in, it tingles and salivation begins. But that's all there is to it.
    • Finish
Pleasant interplay between sweetness and wood flavor and a little acidity. Slightly mineral notes.
