  1. RJKrueger scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A nice round single malt from the ex-Bourbon barrel with a very good price-performance ratio. The medium-long aftertaste can be easily compensated for with a second dram.
    • Nose
      87 87
Light, pear (Abate Fetel), yellow plums, some cherry, slight hints of tobacco and smoke.
    • Taste
      88 88
Nice round and soft, also here rather light fruit notes, a splash of lemon, clear vanilla, spicy wood notes and also some tobacco and light smoke.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long, round, harmoniously ending, without bitter echoes - very nice.

Superb, complex whisky. Doughy, malty, musty, industrial and fruity with a lick of rubbery peat and tobacco in the background. Absolutely delightful.

    Pretty good performance, exceeding expectations.
Full of aromas, it seems to be ex-bourbon barrels, full of pears, apples, wood, vanilla, etc. full of southern summer imagery.
The malt aroma of the whisky itself is very strong, and the body is very thick, and finally retains some pungent peppery aroma, which can awaken the taste of the drinker, which I like very much.
Personally like this bottle of whisky, especially after seeing its price: 18-year-old whisky, 46% ABV, but only costs 60euro? Very good, I will definitely continue to pay attention to this distillery in the future.

The total taste is 85 points, the price +1 point, a total of 86 points.

For me personally, a very unusual flavor that hits the palate in the same strange way.
A very unusual whisky that will surprise even the most sophisticated tasters.
Although the whisky is unusual, it is rude like a rural brute, almost devoid of any sophistication, but it gives a lot of vivid sensations and leaves no one indifferent.
Also, it seems to me that new-make contains a lot of tails or was kicked out on a low cube.
I really want to know the average rating, it seems to me that I will put it lower. I never look at the average grade until I put my own. Yes. And so it happened. :)

    • Nose
Very sulphurous, fruity, slightly mashy. There is a certain staleness or mustiness in the aroma, it seems that it will go away when the whisky breathes. Now let's check.
A fair amount of smoke, meaty, heavy, juicy, lots of woodiness, hot peppers and snuff that makes you want to sneeze, farm craft livestock corral motifs, linseed oil.
      Saturation: 9 out of 10
    • Taste
Base note: farmer's craft motifs for livestock. Lots of hot spices, dried fruits that give a good sweetness, bitterness of almond husks, linseed oil, and in itself an oily, lemon juice and its acid.
Wood tannins, the same staleness, heaviness and fleshiness, enveloping the entire mouth cavity, and also giving a clear outline for the aftertaste.
      Sweetness: 8 out of 10
      Saturation: 9 out of 10
    • Finish
Barrel wood, alcohol content, tannic dryness, burning sharpness, the same heaviness and farm.
Very persistent, but not very interesting.

    Nose
The nose is first impressed by a rich spice, like cinnamon, accompanied by vanilla, fermented pear juice and a touch of malt, as well as some tart fruit, light smoke, and wood.

    Palate
Thick and oily; the palate starts with the bitterness of aged oak, which fades to sweetness and the warm spices spread immediately, with ripe orchard fruit, leather, rich malt and some dark chocolate, as well as a hint of white pepper and smoke.

    Finish
Med-long; dry, with a mix of bitter and sweet, the slight warm spice from the spices remains, similar to pepper and cinnamon, light malt, green tea, and tobacco, with a hint of sour plum soup after a while.

  12. 2ndSip scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

emphasizes fruity on the nose, rather dark fruity sweetness of the fruits (but without sherry). In the taste, the focus is initially more on the spiciness and spices, only with the second sip do the fruit aromas come through better again.
Unfortunately, for me it was too tart or too bitter from the oak.
    [86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Maybe...]
    • Nose
      86 86
intense fruit aromas (sweet apples, pears, plums, apricots), forest and blossom honey, caramel. The sweetness also brings some marzipan or brown sugar.
The fruity aroma is no longer light fruity for me, but is already changing into a heavier dark fruity note, but without the typical sherry notes being there - it can't be either.
The fruit notes, which appear fresh, have a counterpart with dried fruit, which makes it exciting for me. A summer meadow of flowers can still be heard.
In the background, but noticeable, spiciness on tap, which for me brings out nutmeg and cinnamon; light herbal notes that linger even further in the background.
    • Taste
      84 84
Pleasant, sweetish spiciness is now in the foreground, cinnamon, nutmeg and herbs intrude and thus displace the fruit aromas, which are also there, but rather play second fiddle.
Tart notes (espresso, coffee grounds) are increasingly heard; slightly drifts off into bitterness, for me it just catches up before the tipping point (can also depend on the day).
Second sip: spiciness again, this time sweeter components and the dark fruits now come into their own. But here again the spiciness of the barrel turns into a slight bitterness.
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium to long-lasting: tart, spicy notes of oak tannins. Dried Tea Leaves. Hint of walnut aromas, which, above all, are more reminiscent of the walnut skin.
When everything has faded, a smoky barrel char-type aroma emerges for a brief moment, showing a slight cold ashy note.

    Blind Tasting: July 2021
    • Nose
A typical distillation character in combination with a sweetness and cooked fruits what we usually call a bland aroma, but here in a good sense.
    • Taste
The bland aroma permeates the taste along with cooked vegetables. After a while some citrus tones. Cereal taste that are prominent throughout the body.
    • Finish
Short, with some sweet licorice, mild pepper and a little smoke in the background.

Loch Lomond; a not very popular distillery. You do not see them on the shelves at Schiphol airport. It is what it is! But ever since I visited Loch Lomond distillery with my friends, I started to get more than average interested in their bottlings.
    • Nose
      88 88
Impressive thick nose. Full of butter and vanilla. Without a shadow of the doubt; this is the LL signature.
    • Taste
      87 87
Soft, again thick, creamy and full body. A tad smoky; but very light. Mild spices; all well balanced. 46% abv is very ok. It does not need to be more; but a lower abv would have made it weaker.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long. Wood, spices and a touch of smoke in the finish.

They did well with this one. Having had the Inchmoan 18 a while back I was pleasantly surprised that this LL 18 beats that one in my book. Looking forward to compare it to the quite (European) oak-heavy LL 14 on of these days. Good bank for the buck.

Very drinkable - this dram goes fast :-) Nose and taste are very balanced. Finish isn't really my thing - there is something weird there (and the finish is rather short too). But overall this is a great dram! Enjoyed tasting this!
    • Nose
      86 86
The nose is sweet with honey, grains, sweet malt, pear and a bit of sour apples. In my opinion the nose is the best! It has some prumes (maybe in combo with the sour apples). I seem to be missing the smoke... But there is something faint earthy (basement).
    • Taste
      82 82
The taste is good! Tannines and something beerlike (barley, malty). The mouth dries out a bit. Apple again (but not sour anymore). Even a bit creamy. At the back I taste something like grapefruit-peel and then some balanced sweets again.
    • Finish
      72 72
The finish is rather short; something I did not expect. I have oak, young wet wood, even some pencil chips and a touch of tobacco. Although these tasting-tones seem to be very nice, the real life combo isn't a 100% my thing. The finish disappointed me a bit.

Loch Lomond 18 years, 46% alc. Original bottling (2020). Expansion: American oak barrels

Nose: Very slightly smoky with different tobacco and pleasant fruit aromas. Pears, mirabelle plums, slightly unripe plums and tart apples, peaches. In addition, green tea and cigars, perhaps cedar wood and a bit of mushy banana. Also slightly musty aromas, like in a damp cellar.

Palate: Oily and very intense, the fruit aromas are still present, still slightly tart with crumbly apples, watermelon and grapefruit, tobacco and a lot of tea. There is also mild ginger and a slightly stronger note of pepper, as well as a little nutmeg.

Finish: very long, wood smoke, tobacco and a bit of fruit. The oak wood is present, slightly tingling with nutmeg and pepper.

Conclusion: A really nice whisky with a wonderful aroma profile. Balanced between power, complexity and harmonious lines, really highly recommended. 87/100 points (2021)

This is another distillery that seems to be on the up but keeping up with their different types of whisky takes some doing.

Beautiful Loch Lomond with noticeably older age. Very tart and with strong oak tones. Still not intrusive or even superimposed.

Tobacco and tea leaves are mentioned in the official notes. I underline that too.

A strong, bitter dram. I like it.

You can drink, but you don't have to. I think the heavy oak is still okay, I find the musty notes a bit annoying.
    • Nose
First a somewhat artificial green apple, plus green tea and some smoke. A musty note that is difficult to define hovers over everything. Something between old leather, musty laundry and damp cardboard. The musty thing bothers me a little.
    • Taste
Strong and oily with lots of black pepper. tee is back too, but now black. Unfortunately something musty again here.
    • Finish
There is solid oak here. Long drawn black tea and tobacco leaves, herbal notes and persistent spices. Some apple and melon.

compared this on next to a loch lomond cadenhead 21y 1997-2018 52,5%. This one rocked the show against the cadenhead version. i truly underestimated loch lomond until i tried this. hadnt had something that special in my glas for a long time.
    • Nose
fresh handrolling tobacco, leather seats, dried tea, strongly fermented tea, wow, mineal notes, stones? dried leaves, junipers. reminds me of the loch lomond organic 17y cs. the filling of chocolate bananas. high complexity. tiger balm. heather. wow again.
    • Taste
maritime notes, smooth, white pepper, medicinal and salty. numbs the mouth.
    • Finish
      beautiful.
