The Lagavulin was my first heavily smoky whisky years ago. After initial difficulties, I was soon very enthusiastic. After a few years I treated myself to another bottle and the malt has lost none of its fascination. The smoky medicinal aroma and the wonderful maritime notes really make this Lagavulin something special.
    • Nose
Intense, heavy smoke on the nose and medical notes reminiscent of a doctor's office, especially iodine. Plus seaweed, algae and salty sea air. Despite these aromas, the Lagavulin offers a nice malty sweetness. After some time in the glass I also find smoked ham, rotten wood, mineral notes and even cherries. A great, unique nose!
    • Taste
The malt glides over the tongue oily and ashy. Salt and iodine form a nice contrast to the malty sweetness and a slightly peppery spiciness. There is also dark chocolate and some orange.
    • Finish
Sweet, medicinal smoke and mineral notes open the finish. These notes really linger on the palate, along with chocolate, smoked ham and salt.

delicious malt, but I think the 16 year old DE is a bit better. Still complex and recommendable
    • Nose
a lot of smoke, campfire, some smoked ham, fruits, quickly changing to maritime notes with seaweed, light sweetness, smell of the ocean. Later getting a little weaker
    • Taste
Here, too, smoke and sweetness, spicy, a little malty, here too maritime notes, oak comes out somewhat, becoming salty, a little ashy taste
    • Finish
Smoky sweet, slightly malty, nutty, spicy with oak, very slightly salty. Medium length.

A bottle for the steady bar, which means that this is one of the few bottles that will be bought after emptying, or the Distillers Edition of it.
The 88 points come about if you include the excellent PLV of around € 60 in 2021 for a 16-year-old whisky. Otherwise maybe an 87 in terms of taste.
The Standard is maybe a great gift, for myself I would always invest a few more euros for the Distillers Edition.

It's still the most fabulous nose of any core range malt on Islay, but year by year the taste feels more watery. Not blander or less detailed, mind you, just more subdued. It is to be expected, of course, but still feels like watching someone you love dearly slowly fade away.

...now I made myself sad :(
