    notes by Douglas Laing
    • Nose
Honey sweet initially - running dryer and spicier
    • Taste
gentle till held - then malt, honey and spices kick in
    • Finish
big on camphor, warmingly spiced, sweet then dry

I suspect there was a problem with the refill hogshead cask this whisky was matured in.  My reason for buying this bottle was that all of the Mortlachs that I have were matured in refill sherry butts, and I thought it would be interesting to try this one and compare the cask influces.  My advice is to avoid this one or obtain a sample and try before buying if you can.  There are far better Mortlachs available.
    • Nose
Vinegar.  Very acidic and sour on the nose.
    • Taste
The arrival is rich, malty sweetness that is a trademark of Mortlach, but it very quickly develops astringency and turns dry.  Not entirely unpleasant but also not what one would expect from a Mortlach.
    • Finish
      Medium length and mouth drying.
