Excellent Ledchik, classic - smoke in PX!

  2. wncvirus scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Nose: Smoke, sherry elements, with some smoke.

Taste: Rather one-dimensional in flavor. Pretty young. A little smoke with a slight sweetness.

Rating: 87 | 100 Finish slightly smoky medium long. More like a basic bottle.

Smoke & sherry; oil, grease combined with dried prunes, sultanas

Very nice balance between smoked salty meat, raisins and some spice.
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium long finish, peppery - even a hint of menthol. Then some dry sweetness pops in before the smoke makes it appearance

It's worth noting that Ledaig's finishes and endurances in PX are incredible.
All the time it is felt that there is some kind of echo with the profile of Port Charlotte, which is equally unusual in terms of smoke.
    N:22 T:23 F:23 B:22
    • Nose
Copper and sulfur, burning damp branches in a daytime forest after rain, mustard and barrel pickles on horseradish and garlic, also the classic Ledaig profile, dry grass, fruit sweetness, sea buckthorn oil, prunes
    • Taste
Bright sweetness 8/10, copper and sulfur, burnt and smoky notes, propolis, sea buckthorn oil, minerality, pollen, honey, citruses, at the same time lightness and freshness, not without citruses, bright taste and sourness of prunes.
      Gorgeous, cool, crisp Ledaig profile.
    • Finish
Almost repeats the taste with a slight dry "roll" if you track it over time. Prunes and burnt twigs, as usual.

    COLOR: light amber

    - a super delicious fruity intense complex malt
    - still justifiable at around 110 € for the time being
    150 € rather too high
    • Nose
spicy, dry, lemon, herbs, mixture of spices, salty / maritime, strong sherry aromas hardly recognizable
    • Taste
      o.Water: slightly burning, tingling start, strong complex taste, dark chocolate, raisins, berries, oak, smoke very subtly integrated, pure also super drinkable, doesn't actually need any water;

With water: the stinging / tingling sensation is gone, the sherry aroma is sweeter, honey is added, very aromatic and tasty
    • Finish
      soft, medium-long, fruity, sweet finish;
      long aromatic aftertaste

Brief comparison with the Ledaig 18 (WID: 93480).

In the nose, the Ledaig 18 is significantly smokier, heartier, tart and dirtier than the 12. The 12 is much sweeter, "sweeter" and smoother. The smoke is probably relatively muffled by the barrel and therefore does not seem as special as you often know it from Ledaig.
It's similar in the mouth. The start of the 12 is of course stronger due to the higher alcohol content. Then a lot of sweetness first. The smoke is now stronger than in the nose. Plus a lot of spice. The Ledaig 18 also offers sweetness, but not as creamy and as much as the 12. It is also bitter, smokier and drier in the mouth.

I like both of them. I find the 18 more typical because there is more of the smoke left.
The 12 is pretty barrel-stressed. But not fake for me. That fits well.

Absolutely meets my taste. Slightly smoother and rounder than the comparable Liquid Treasures from 2020.
Tightly woven and therefore very nicely made!
Dangerously tasty despite the high alcohol content.

    Smooth 1
    • Nose

      Wow!
A full broadside sweet raisins and other dried fruit. The smoke holds back a little or doesn't match the other flavors. Over time, it spins again and the smoke takes over. A great interplay.

Very maritime! Sometimes you think you're sitting on a crab cutter.

Everything is just very nicely coordinated. He has that certain something more than the 18.
    • Taste
      91 91
A great mix between sweet raisins and a rather dirty smoke. The smoke is on the BBQ side with a slight cowshed note.
Red forest berries come through after a while. There is also a certain note of dough.
      Totally meets my taste.
    • Finish
      87 87
Rather short for a smoky malt from the sherry barrel. Small point deduction.

Very umami-sweet. Nose is fantastic, alcohol integration too. PX overpowers the palate and finish to my taste but a unique experience nonetheless.
    • Nose

Burnt bread, sesame seeds, maritime salt, smoked ham, tarragon and basil. Layered, balances nicely on meaty, herbal and sweet notes.
    • Taste

Meaty, juicy, heavy and intensely sweet. Creamy syrupy texture, Barbeque sauce, dried herbs, earthy peat.

Smooth. Sweet and creamy in texture, Dried sweet fruits and ashes, Maggi and black pepper.

  24. Tangtang_WhiskyYoda scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

The palate doesn't match the nose and finish, which makes this malt particularly interesting. Very nice combination of flavors. In the finish you can find the aromas from the nose and palate. Great malt
    • Nose
Smoke, smoked ham but with a maritime note, herbs and then dried fruits, the alcohol is somewhat present
    • Taste
smoky and lots of herbs, citrus fruits, pepper, a little honey, some oak
    • Finish
Ashy finish, here come the dried fruits again, some citrus fruits and honey, also a little pepper, herbs. Oily, creamy and long

  25. Marcmoritz scored this whisky 88 points Member Junior

Lots and abundant sherry aroma but in my opinion it dominates as a too thick layer on the surface so that subtle mead notes remain hidden underneath.
But I think I'm complaining about a juicy one that you can just pour.

    [Color] rich amber;
    • Nose

strong smoke, citrus aromas (balm, lemon), herbs, spices, salt - the long sherry barrel finish is not recognizable in the nose!
    • Taste

Very good, I expected it to be more peaty, instead peat is just a pleasant accompaniment to a variety of aromas and flavors
    • Nose
Pulpy fruit (plums and red fruits) pure licorice (taboo), very light smoke, after a while a nice panettone emerges, perfectly integrated alcohol. With water the licorice explodes and the smoky note emerges a little more, while the fruity component is attenuated and the alcohol becomes even less present.
    • Taste
Earthy peat, lots of licorice, sweet fruit, a hint of lemon, tobacco, slightly tannic (earthy) even in the mouth the alcohol is handled well. With water, alcohol is very low and the other gustatory components are retained
    • Finish
      Very long, licorice, ash

A Ledaig that hides its origins very well from the nose but then reveals it in the taste, although the classic Ledaig goat barn taste is largely masked by the PX Sherry. Overall not mine but acceptable for a Ledaig.
    • Nose
      86 86
Vegetable broth, rose water, slight traces of lovage (Maggi) that traditionally comes from the PX, relatively low smokiness / peatiness.
    • Taste
      83 83
Now clearly smoky and peaty, clear goat barn, now the PX sweetness comes into play alongside the lovage Maggi aroma, dark fruits but also cellar weariness.
    • Finish
      82 82
It ends with a clear black pepper spiciness that lasts quite a long time, overall not very complex, dry and now less sweet.

Always interesting samples of this whisky.
    • Nose
      86 86
Smoke, burnt plastic, oil, and through it all rise flowers and dried fruits. An old black tea brew that was forgotten.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste of sweet smoke-a fire in a confectionery factory, dried fruits and candied fruits. Very bright and burning taste. Fermented tea.
    • Finish
      85 85
The aftertaste is sweet, smoky, bright, and long.

Nose: dirty peat and some plastic, engine oil, and new bicycle tires in addition to black tea leaves, bbq marinade, sherry wine, tannins, sticky caramel, and fudge, some berries and sweet syrupy touches, hints of fresh oil paint.

Palate: lovely mouthfeel on this one, quite oily and viscous: peat, dirty feel to it then soot (lots of it), the PX is quite noticeable as well with a lovely sweet layer, in addition to chocolate-covered dates and prunes, there’s sweet BBQ meat in the marinade (reminiscent of the nose) , with more ash, and fried fruit jam, oak, and wood spices. very rich and comforting, and still very Ledaig.

Finish: bittersweet, with a peppery touch, tea leaves sweet smoke mixed with the dried fruit. Silan (date honey) and some salty edge too. Very long with the ash and smoke going a long way, as well as the tannins.

Conclusion: A very yummy, and sweet-ish, peaty popsicle from Tobermory. Very very more-ish. So damn tasty.
