My first Finish whisky. And like any from a country without a specific whisky tradition I approach it without prejudice or too high expectations.
    Simple but promising.
    • Nose
      78 78
Sweet, some spices and some raw wood notes.
The age is given, but I think it would have been hard to try hide it's youth.
The rye character is getting more through as it sits for a while.
Some fruity notes swirling around. Apricot, peach, maybe a hint of banana bread.
    • Taste
      80 80
Sweeter than the nose. Also more spicy.
The wood is dry with a bit of resinous bitterness.
Right after swallowing the youth of the spirit is again very noticeable.
    • Finish
      79 79
The fruits make an encore in the finish.
Not easy to define, but it's mostly sweet.

Medium length with spice and an espresso note.

It needs a few more years in the barrel

Well... unless you are a Kyrö/local/other-than-the-usual-Scotch/Bourbon/Irish/Japanese Whisk(e)y enthusiast this is not unlike many neighbouring german whiskies: clean distillate, but too young and rather forgettable. If there were no alternatives, sure, I'll drink it - it's not BAD liquor after all. But given the choice I shall gladly pass. Or in other words the price of this (EUR 42+/0.5l) scaled up to 0,7l will get you many many many far superior Rye Whiskeys to choose from.

    • Nose
the first thing that hits my nose is a powerful note of orange zest. Behind it, strong rye bread, fresh wood and vanilla. Then again fruit in the form of peaches and red apples. Some cinnamon and honey in the background
    • Taste
The rye is even more pronounced in the mouth than in the nose. Herb drops, vanilla, oranges and apricots follow.
    • Finish
Rye also dominates here. Behind oranges and peaches. A creaminess lingers in the mouth for a long time

  9. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A nice rye whisky. In particular, the aromas in the nose are pleasing due to their complexity. On the palate, then somewhat decreasing variety
    • Nose
      85 85
Sweetness, pear, rye spice, solvent, some wood, gingerbread spice, black tea, rice pudding with cinnamon and sugar
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweet and soft, rye spice, well-integrated alcohol
    • Finish
      83 83
Surprisingly long finish with a strong bite, rye, toasted wood, gum, pear, some malt

    S 5
Surprisingly sweet and smooth on nose and palate. Finish lack complexity. Rye character exploded after leaving it to breathe for 10 minutes.

    N 25
Quite oaky on the first sniff
    Vanilla
    Refreshingly fruity, peach
Subtle chilli spice hiding behind the sweet nose
More spice when let it breath

    P 23
    Very vanillic
    Citrusy
    Creamy sweetness
Spice (mostly pepper) hasn’t surfaced until the point of swallowing
More rye when let it breath

    F 22
    Mid-dry finish
    Gentle spice (pepper) lingering
    Touch of caramel, mint

  11. Sporx scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

    Aroma
Vanilla, dried fruits, juniper, moist spruce forest

    taste
Sweet, rye bread, dry, spicy, young

    finish
    Medium long, dry, spicy

  12. larswehmeier scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

My first Finnish whisky and a malt rye, 100% made from malted rye.

The master distiller described the barrel composition in the tasting with 50% Virgin American White Oak Casks, 48% Ex-Bourbon Casks and 2% 1st fill Ex-Oloroso Casks.
    • Nose
Malty and quite spicy on the first impression. Lots of bread and toasted aromas. Then herbaceous. Gets sweeter over time. Lots of honey. Apricot. Some apple.
    • Taste
Strong start (but it was also the first whisky of the day). Pleasantly cute. Lots of honey. Sweet rye bread.
    • Finish
      Relatively short, mild, sweet.

  13. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Thanks Finland. A characterful, very unique rye that still tastes good. Kippis.

Edit: I had this blind again almost 1 year later, and I didn't like it at all. Classic Daily form, but I'm lowering my rating a bit.
    • Nose
      85 85
Smells like sauna. Fresh wood, softwood, honey, birch leaves. Sweet, spicy and unique.
    • Taste
      85 85
Nice powerful start. Immediately the bitterness from the roe, a citrus zest of acidity, subtle vanilla and sweetness in the background.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish shows wood, resin, mint, tart rye, spice and a hint of birch bark liqueur.

It's a nice surprise to drink a whisky from Finland, it's my first. It's not to be compared with a single malt, as this is a "rye malt": exlclusive use of rye.

Where rye usually is associated with spices, this whisky somehow shows that this is not always entirely true. It reminds me of grappa, hence it has a very fruity twist. Not that there is no spice involved, but it's milder than you would expect.

Further, this whisky is both a bit yeasty/bready and also quite sweet-associated (honey, syrup, vanilla cream). I am not sure what to think of that. It could be a combination of maturing spirit with the effect of overly active wood. Hence I would be interested in tasting a Kyrö matured in some less active wood.
    • Nose
      82 82
After pouring, the nose reminds me of grappa. I've had both unaged grappa (Poli's Traminer-Grappa) and aged Grappa that seem to have very similar smells. The fruity side soon fades a little, in favour of some wood notes (wooden planks and some developing vanillins). Gradually, spicy rye elements shine through. Pine needle, juniper, rye bread. Apart from the grape-like smells, there is a tiny citric edge.
    • Taste
      81 81
The palate starts a bit thin and acidic, but gradually develops into a sweet rye malt. It's quite fruity and syrupy for a rye: tinned peach, gewürztraminer grape, honey, vanilla milkshake, pear drop, cake frosting. There is still a malty side on rye bread, and a spicy side of ginger and juniper.
    • Finish
      81 81
The spicy side (cinnamon, ginger) prevails now, together with a yeasty /malty touch of unbaked bread, still some syrup to balance it, and some vanilla cream.

  18. marmeladow scored this whisky 74 points Expert Senior

Young, bitter, slightly skipped rye whisky, which is far too expensive for me for what it offers compared to single malts.
Not my cup of tea, but I'm not a fan of rye either. Perhaps recommendable for aficionados who appreciate rye whisky and want to try a different, very natural product.
    • Nose
      73 73
Paper aromas, a lot of rye, some vanilla and caramel with a delicate sweetness
    • Taste
      74 74
Strong start, more pleasant to drink with a little water. Slightly bitter-burning. Otherwise, the rye dominates: Tastes like a slightly sour, but also sweet, fresh rye bread. A hint of fruit and honey join in phases.
    • Finish
      74 74
medium-long, persistent rye notes, also acceptable oak spiciness and hint of bitterness

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger.
What Peatbogger and I have in common is trying something new and unusual and I thank him for this.
    Also my first Finnish whisky.
I can't be too harsh on these guys but where they go from here I wish them all the luck.
    • Nose
      58 58
God this is young and it smells like a page in a book.
Not just the paper but the cardboard box it came in.
It really is hard to get past this, very light fruit notes.
      Hints of white vinegar.
I have tried much younger stuff than this that had a lot more to offer.
    • Taste
      62 62
I wasn't giving much hope for the taste after the nose.
I have been pleasantly surprised before but not this time, the nose is the same as the taste.
This is very dry, almost closes your mouth completely.
Is this the sweat from the sauna they were talking about after a heavy night of drinking whisky
Spice and very light fruit are it's best hand.
    • Finish
      60 60
The finish ( no pun intended) is quite long but in this case is unfortunate.
Cardboard aftertaste with a sprinkling of that white Vinegar.

Nose: rye, black bread, caraway seeds, pontefract cake, sponge, hundreds and thousands. To me this tastes like the essence of rye, if it were distilled, which it is! With time, linseed oil emerges, like you would use to oil a cricket bat and it becomes fruitier- golden delicious and victoria plum
Palate: very sweet, not at all like the nose- candy cigarettes and apple juice, almond dragees
Finish: genever, it tastes like oak aged juniper

Worth picking up for the nose alone.

Tasted as part of Rye Squad with Whisky Squad, the Bristol Whisky Appreciation Society and Dram Team.

  21. Apotheker106 scored this whisky 83 points Newbie

All in all a young, fresh, robust and edgy Rye that makes the rough climate of Finland tangible. I liked it.
    • Nose
Immediately jump to the nose young and fresh. A slight acidity of citrus fruits, reminiscent of grapefruit. Immature, still hard and sour plums. In the background sweet notes, caramel, vanilla and the spice of rye. Over time, the acid disappears and leaves more space for the rye. On the nose now freshly baked rye sourdough bread with ripe, sweet grapes. Some yeast.
    • Taste
In the mouth the acid settles down even more and takes on a milder, fruity character. Rye bread, this time with raisins and not as a sourdough. A hint of prunes, a little honey. The bitterness of the wood is present, as is a little more spice.
    • Finish
The finish is comparatively short. The fruits disappear quickly, a doughy-spicy note remains, which is more and more replaced by the bitterness of the wood.

  24. pere scored this whisky 76 points Connoisseur

Nose: Spicy, sweetish, some quite fresh wood, dark sugar, oak. With water some citrus notes.

Taste: Bit drier, spicy, brown, dark sugar, a hint of honey. Gets sweeter and more woody with water.

In comparison the Pre-Release No.5 is lighter, drier and not that spicy, but also more fruity.
