    • Nose
N: bit the same nose as the base. It also has the salty, cured ham and smoke. But there is clearly some fruitiness from the rum barrel here. It reminds me especially of warm pineapple from the barbecue. Also wet rope and oil.
    • Taste
P: okay here clearly sweeter than the standard. Canned peach and pineapple. Sweet oil and some black pepper. More barbecue smells. Black on white salmiak candy. Caramelized sugar.
    • Finish
F: basically everything in the palette slowly ebbs away in the aftertaste.

  2. SwiftyMcVeigh scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Suspect a Caol Ila that received a finish in rum barrels for a few months. The latter are responsible for the (molasses) sweetness and the tropical fruits. Easy to drink on a barbecue evening, not overly complex.
    • Nose
      86 86
Grilled marshmallows. Peat smoke. Wine gum. Grilled pineapple and other tropical fruits. Tar and molasses. Also sea salt.
    • Taste
      85 85
Peat smoke and tropical fruits. Grilled pineapple. In addition, honey sweetness in interplay with sea salt, but the sweetness (molasses) dominates. Lemon too.
    • Finish
      83 83
The sweetness remains with the grill ash. Short to medium long.

Hey, is this our old friend sherried Caol Ila with a new dress and extra peat? Anyways, rum plays a great role to add more molasses sweetness to complement the peat while keeping away the unnecessary spices that we usually get from rum casks. Good cask management. Yes, it’s very heavy, but if you’re a peathead, you won’t wanna miss this.

[83-85] I'll get a bottle unless my bank account says otherwise.

    N 25
Smoked bacon. Sea water. Very heavy peat. Smoked tropical fruits (char-grilled pineapple and lime slides).

    P 25
Very sweet and peaty. Heavily smoked spices. Molasses and fruits. Sultana. More coastal breeze. Iodine. Still some citrusy but now at the background. A touch biscuity when diluted down.

    F 25
Mid-long, dry finish. Fruit & golden syrup lingering. The peat smoke is in its heart and it’ll make sure you never forget that.

Yes, he has smoke. And then? There is not much more. Where are the rum cask influences? I do not find any. The metallic youth comes into its own and the missing bite on the palate has to be criticized in particular. Despite the 46% vol, it clearly lacks power.

I'm very impressed. A sweet and bitter whisky with lots of fruit, peat and smoke. The alcohol is completely undetectable, but warm at the very end. Besides, the price which is very affordable. Perfect whisky for evening meetings by the fireplace.

  12. tester1277 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Nice pleasant aroma, you could smell it for a long time. Similar to the "Rum Riot", but overall I find the Rebel to be smokier in aroma, significantly sweeter in taste and not as earthy. If you like it sweet, you should grab the Rebel. If you like more peat, you should go for the riot.
    • Nose
Campfire smoke, smoked bacon, slightly medicinal, fruity sweetness, soft, gentle, pleasantly cooling, stings a bit. The rum doesn't come through as much here as it did in the Riot.
    • Taste
creamy, lots of sweetness, nice peat smoke, not earthy at all, peppery, pleasantly round
    • Finish
somewhat earthy, dry, slightly peppery, somewhat short

The Smokehead Rum Rebel Limited Edition is a limited 2020 bottling by independent bottler Ian MacLeod. With the Rum Rebel, the name says it all, because smoky Islay Single Malt meets exotic and sweet notes of the rum casks. There are many rumors about which distillery the casks that led to this strong and charismatic whisky came from. The names that fall in this context range from Lagavulin to Laphroaig to Caol Ila. The Smokehead Rum Rebel Limited Edition was bottled unfiltered with 46.0% vol.
    • Nose
Smoke and peat notes, sweet and exotic fruit notes, marshmallows and bacon.
    • Taste
Lots of smoke and peat oily on the tongue. Add honey, citrus fruits and bananas.
    • Finish
Long lasting and powerful. Oak wood, maritime notes, fruit and smoke.

i think this a very young whisky because of the metallic notes.
I read some different experiences here but my bottle was completely overpowered by the rumcask. Maybe a bad bottle?

To be honest, this line was not particularly impressive, but this specimen has proven itself very well. He took it with his excellent balance, which was lacking in other malts from this series.

Complex on the nose, not so on the palate. A sweet start with a dirty charcoal smoke, which doesnt kill the demerara sugar and ananassy mouthfeel. Well balanced.
The finish is long because of the heavy smoke load in the throat ;-).
On a blind taste i could not find any rum influence btw.

Easy drinking classic quite sweet smoker, i also suppose a caol ila spirit in here. This ashy smoke is caol-ilish, a joy.

The fruity, sweet rum influence is nicely integrated with the classic Islay flavours.
    • Nose
It certainly has a different profile than the standard expression. There's comparatively subtle smoke and a whiff of smoked bacon, but also grilled pineapple, ripe bananas and tinned peaches. Finally some notes of raw sugar and charred marshmallows.
    • Taste
Sweet arrival with orange marmalade and some salted caramel, followed by crisp smoke and earthy peat, as well as some lively cracked black pepper. A touch of aniseed as well.
    • Finish
The fruits return for an encore on the palate. Grilled lemon peel and some tinned pineapple. Medium in length.

Good young smoker, of course you can't taste the rum barrel again. More like a rather bitter note in the finish. Solid and tasty.

From SMOKEHEAD today the new bottling with a rum cask finish, bottled in the usual 46% vol. And with familiar features.
    • Nose
      87 87
It starts with a strong surge of smoked bacon and gum, followed by a heavy sweetness of molasses, before various fruits can be guessed by sniffing in deeper: banana, pear, liquorice, cocoa, a little camphor and olive herb.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily sweetness on the palate, some menthol with fiery stone, ripe pear and banana, smoked bacon, some oak spice, salmiak pastilles. The different aromas are very tasty side by side and always allow for new facets, which makes drinking enjoyment very varied. The whisky tolerates air very well.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium to long finish, with a dirty sweetness, yellow fruits and a very pleasant spice that ends in a long flow of saliva. The variety of flavors shows itself here once again in all its glory.

  34. EvilAFI scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

It’s a decent finished blend, strong smoke with canned pineapple and very peppery.
    • Nose
      86 86
Smoke, sweet tinned pineapple, grassy, slightly acrid
    • Taste
      87 87
Campfire, waxy, tropical fruit punch, peppery
    • Finish
      86 86
Ashy, briney, fruit syrup, chili and black pepper
