Very similar to ID 68577, not so much to ID 22570.
    • Nose
Waxy honey, furniture polish perhaps. Apple, peach, almond and vanilla.
    • Taste
Honey, apple, cocoa and a little leather. Slightly floral. Some old... eh jug effect noticeable.
    • Finish
      Vanilla sugar, apple and cocoa.

For my birthday, I decided to open up something special.
A 12yo Springbank ceramic jug bottled 10/1974! So there is spirit in here from 1962 or earlier. I guess this is one of the first decanters ever made because there isn’t even an indication of ABV or size. (Personally I think it is 75cl and 43%). Many of these decanters can’t be dated exactly but thanks to the Belgian laws at that time, there is a customs certificate that mentions the bottling date.
Opening this was really special and exciting because I didn’t know the fill level, how much evaporated, was it genuine or fake, was the spirit still drinkable?
The wax seal had really become soft and sticky because of the warm weather recently and of course, the 46 year old cork broke and half fell into the jug. I got it out using the bag trick though.
Measuring the liquid, I found there was 67,5cl left. So there was 10% evaporation.
There was not much debris in the liquid so I just filtered the last few centiliters.
And then the big moment finally arrived. Tasting!
I was blown away by the first sip because of the higher then expected power the spirit still had. A big smile appeared on me and my father in law’s face. The spirit is still drinkable, better still, it is magnificent!
I will of course do some more tasting in the coming weeks but the spirit reminds me a bit of the latest IAAS3 bottling. Pure (refill?) bourbon maturation, and very smooth and complex.
The exciting feeling of opening and tasting such an old bottling really made this a birthday to remember!
