Grassy citrus on the nose with sweet chalk and mineral smoke. On the palate very fresh and mescal like with citrus smoke and sweet oily minerals. On the finish some herbal smoke, lemon, black pepper and again that mineral sweetness. Seems the earlier Works In Progress leant more towards an ultra sharp citrus smoke and mineral profile before rounding off with warmer fruits and butter in the later (bourbon cask) editions. Either way consistent high quality and strong distillery character throughout. Such an impressive distillate.

    July 2, 2016 Aroma
Not very pronounced, some leather and wood as undertones, above it citrus, something spicy: oregano, thyme Taste
Wow, what a difference. A lot of taste! Smoky, peaty, keeps the fresh notes of citrus. Also a bit salty. Finish
Remains somewhat burning, little development Particularities
Vast difference between aroma and taste.

My first Kilkerran. I feel that this whisky is fairly young, but I have good expectations.
    • Nose
Delicate touch of peat, citrus background and sweetness of barley.
    • Taste
Pleasantly sweet, peaty but also citrus.
    • Finish
      Short, smoky, but pleasant

Clearly very young and sharp on the nose, a very nice profile typical of Campbeltown whiskys. Has something like Clynelish but is much less fruity. The 10 year version is clearly more mature and mature and the 11 CS will be a real winner.

The three Kilkerran Work in Progress releases have no distillation/bottling dates or age statements. Here`s how to tell the difference:

White label and tube: 5yo WIP 1 2009

Grey label and tube: 6yo WIP 2 2010

Green label and tube: 7yo WIP 3 2011

  25. Willie JJ scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

A very decent whisky but I wish these WIP bottlings were at full strength.
    • Nose
A surprisingly gentle nose given Kilkerran's full strength profile.
Definite salt fish notes nicely balanced with malt and vanilla.
    • Taste
Salt and sugar in perfect harmony as the malt struggles to assert itself. Surprising floral notes.
    • Finish
Not all that exciting and a little hot at the end

  26. Zitch scored this whisky 85 points Member Junior

    • Nose
      Lemon butter
    • Taste
very subtly smoked and peaty, vanilla
    • Finish
fairly short finish, a slight peat return, small acidity

  27. Lafroy scored this whisky 72 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Powerful, with notes of barley, salt, malted
barley, hay, oak, dryness and smoked meat, additionally hints of countryside and
      white pepper.
    • Taste
Relatively powerful, intensive  with hints of sourness, bourbon, spirit, paint
thinner, peat, salt, light bitterness, and strong notes of unpleasant alcohol.
      Additionally, smoke and wet tobacco.
    • Finish
Very long, smoothly sweet and sour, as
well as filled with hot pepper and light bitterness.

I'm not quite sure about this yet. It was not bad by any stretch, but it needs a few more years in the cask to polish off those rough edges. However, for a young whisky, it is promising. Looking forward to 2016 for the 12 year.

  29. BeatF scored this whisky 80 points Photo Moderator

young, balanced, thus somewhat characterless; not ripping off their socks
    • Nose
floral, sourish malt, fresh impression; whole, very discreet peat breeze
    • Taste
      Herbs, light toffee
    • Finish
gentle peat, then very discreet toffee, some alcohol taste: unspectacular finish
