A great example of bright youthful Caol Ila. A satisfying mouthfeel with the coastal notes Caol Ila does so well, a hint of wood spice, balanced by a creamy underscore.
    • Nose
      90 90
The clean, brisk coast of Islay on the nose. Maritime notes of sea salt and a pebble beach, with a vegetal note reminiscent of the vegetation-covered dunes backing on to the shoreline. The ex-bourbon cask contributes characteristic notes of vanilla, and an almond note. And of course Caol Ila’s peat is there, adding a gentle smoke backbone.
    • Taste
      90 90
A creamy whisky, coating the mouth with an oily texture I really enjoy. The alcohol is well integrated, remembering this is cask strength at 55.4%. More of the coast with salt and brine. The malt adds sweet, cereal notes. Gentle peat smoke, pleasant and accessible. Wood spice and pepper add a light heat.
    • Finish
      89 89
A long satisfying finish, with the sweet, peated malt and the wood spice both coming through.

A mature example of a young-ish Caol Ila.
    • Nose
Clean, coastal and crisp—as is to be expected from Caol Ila. Whispers of sauerkraut and vanilla pods, supported by vegetal peat, nori and olive brine. Plenty of mush bananas, a touch of limoncello, and some dried herbs, but also mineral qualities like wet pebbles. Finally even some honey.
    • Taste
A creamy and velvety mouthfeel. The arrival is classic Caol Ila and rather salty and coastal, along with notes of petrol, camphor and tar. Also somewhat bready and there's a tinge of spice as well as green olives.
    • Finish
A pinch of green pepper, smoked kippers. Oily and long.

    • Nose
Fisherman friends, iodine, salt, medicinal, charcoal, smoked bean (horse meat), pearl sugar, marzipan and almonds.
    • Taste
High alcohol, nuts, rosemary, dark chocolate, hand baked bread, black pepper, ginger and lime.
    • Finish
Wall of alcohol is limitation to unfoldment of some flavors.

Complex and elegant nose, an intense palate and a fairly clean and simple finish.
Very much similar to an old style, a lot of OBE, some soft melon fruit. The peat here is soft but muscular, I find it fairly complex. Also some brine noses.
    Rich and powerful.
Vanilla, cardboard, spices, a little honey and underlying smoke.
Top dram, and I long for more.

    • Nose
Gentle medicinal. It is immediately clear that this is a caol ila. Also yellow melon, sulfur sticks, eucalyptus, toast, and the briny of the sea.
    • Taste
Immediately sea salt and kikkoman, a creamy mouthfeel, salted nuts, citrus, something fresh that blows softly through the mouth and pepper.
    • Finish
The finish is long and dry with a large scoop of peat.

A nice caol ila. Not very spectacular, but "just" tasty. Not very complex, but the finish is nice and long.
    • Nose
      86 86
Typical caol ila peat. A bit medicinal, but accessible. A tad salty, the sea influences are clearly visible.
    • Taste
      86 86
It tastes just like it smells. A medicinal undertone, little smoke, but peated. There is a little sweetness in it. Nice caol ila, but in my opinion it could be even more complex. Taste is a bit monotonous.
    • Finish
      87 87
Finish is nice and long. There is a little sweetness in the finish.

They say you can never go wrong with Caol Ila and this one proved it again. Some Caol Ila’s are just good, but this is one of the greater ones. I’m absolutely loving it and I don’t expect this bottle to be around for very long.
    • Nose
Quite fresh and clean and quite good! An elegant layer of peat, mixed with a touch of sauerkraut. Fresh green leaves and slightly grassy. Then lime appears and minerals. Which is followed by some herbs, such as liquorice and a pinch of anise seed.
    • Taste
Peat but well integrated. Salty and a hint of ash. But there’s also kiwi. Some honey here as well and vanilla in the background. Caramel. Mint in the very background. Slightly peppery too.
    • Finish
Long and somewhat ashy. A hint of nettles too, ha! Didn’t saw that coming.
