Purchased without great expectations, the Tobermnory 10 is a real "Under Dog". If you like freshness and herbal notes coupled with a restraint of the sweetness in the whisky, you will be pleasantly surprised!
    • Nose
      87 87
Hay, green apple, floral notes, malty sweetness, beautiful mineral notes, heather honey, vine pear, vanilla
    • Taste
      87 87
Heather, mint, herbs, pleasant sweetness, nice viscosity (oily)
    • Finish
      86 86
Sparkling and fresh on the palate, mint, sweetness, herbs ... very pleasant with a medium long finish.

    Tasted from a sample.

Don’t see why they discontinued this - perhaps the style was ahead of its time? These days when a bottle of Kilkerran 12 is hard to come by, I suspect it would do very well indeed. Lots of stylistic similarities to the Glengyle bottling, with its transparent and austere style. Lovely mouth feel. From memory, the 12 that replaced this is a lot sweeter, darker and more widely acceptable, but I think this is better - need to try the 12 again though!
    • Nose
      88 88
Young but well-matured. Pristinely transparent. Fresh, sweet and fruity. Clean malt and candied fruits, crisp green apple and banana. Honey, malty porridge, nice fluffy pastry notes. Coastal, with a salty edge. Sweet white florals and mango, fresh ginger. With water, more of the tropical fruits and a chalky minerality come out.
    • Taste
      88 88
Light, but nice and honeyed, good oily mouthfeel. Very austere again with mostly clear fruity, salty and spicy impressions. Green apple, buttery pastries, soft banana and waxy gummybears. Ginger and black pepper.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length, slight coating. Fruity, malty, salty. Green apples again, with banana and watermelon. Creamy barley and vanilla, dry spices. Yum.

Successful, not boring entry-level whisky with a clean profile. Between 83 and 85 points. Almost 85 for me today.

Today I'm trying a 5cl miniature with the bottle code 17326.
If you don't know yet: Tobermory is the non-smoky variant of Ledaig or vice versa, Tobermory is also responsible for Ledaig and releases its smoky whisky under this name :-)

This is a beautiful and simple whisky with no flaws, no rough edges or highlights. The 46.3 percent is very good for it and upgrades it compared to comparable standards in its age group, which are only bottled at 40 percent.

The first nose in Glencairn presents a fresh, fruity and balanced profile with initially slightly maritime notes.
However, these maritime notes gradually disappear after 15 minutes. But the overall profile is a bit wider and rounder. The fruity citrus notes become softer, rounder and more malty. Some oak wood.
Unspectacular but surprisingly clean and a perfect everyday spring or fall dram.
    • Taste
      85 85
An only slightly sweet start - here still minimally oily - but which quickly presents itself with clear but clean bitter notes. The aroma profile is more of a robust representative, but as I said, overall round.
Water makes it sweeter and takes away most of its bitter flavors.
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is rather short, the mouthfeel is quite ok, but not oily, not creamy and, at 46.3 percent, also a bit harsh. A bit bitter at the back. But I wouldn't call that a bad mark, because whether you like chicory or not is a question of taste and not a question of quality.

Ok, this one surprised me. I went in with low expectations, and found it to be a beautiful, complex whisky. Orchard fruits, honey, pineapple, chocolate, ginger, salt, light spices. Slightly herbaceous. Very different from the 12 year old, and in my opionion slightly more complex without compromising on the deliciousness.

Starts fruity. Orchard fruits like apples and pears. Marzipan and vanilla next up. A nice hint of barley sugar. And there are also some floral notes like grass and cut flowers.
    • Taste
      80 80
A sweet hint like vanilla to start with. Hints of macarons and grains complement each other very well! There is grass again and a hint of oak. Spicy too with a hint of white pepper and also a bit of smoke.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium-long and warm. There is some sugar and again a hint of grass and a herbacious tone.

  9. Thermidor scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Not expressly a bad malt, but somehow just uninspiring. Tobermory in the 2000s remains, to me, the redheaded stepchild of Ledaig.
    • Nose
Hay and faint yeast. Faint farm notes (cows) too, and dried malts and citrus. It's all rather faint and unexpressive. Sure it has a little bit of character, but Deanston 12yo, which this reminds me a bit of, is better by far.
    • Taste
A solid body on the tongue (46 % helps), oily and peppery. Simple and elemental. Flour-y, with a slightly gritty body. After the minuscule kiss of peat, there is not much else here except these yeasty, hay-ish notes. Uninspiring.
    • Finish
Slightly soapy citrus and wet flour. Time reduces the soapiness, but doesn't add any flavors.

Not impressed at first taste, I've waited some days before going back to it, then discovered and appreciated its pale natural colour and its dry, zesty flavour.
This Mull malt is something quite peculiar, different from the average island ones. Thumbs (and glasses) up!

    Color: light gold, green tea

    - a pleasant 10 year old whisky which is not too
hide, the 46% are quite noticeable
    - more for advanced users than for beginners
    - a delicious drop with about 40 € but a bit
    too high
    • Nose
Sweet malt notes, which are strongly transported by the 46% (you can smell the higher percent clearly), fresh apples, fruit mix from young fruits, nuts
    • Taste
Soft start, slightly oily, pear, apple, light spiciness (develops more on the back of the palate), at the end a slight subtle bitterness

From a mini (I suppose one of the last batches):

Personally I am only missing a little bit of a citric kick, but it is balanced and very drinkable as is. Playing with water didn't end too well on my end.
May have liked to stock up a bottle, but now it's gone. Boohoo.
    • Nose
Medium, fresh and pretty rustic with hints of newmake. Big aromas of freshly malted barley and oats, youthful fruity notes of pear and apple, plus a good dose of honey. Dried ginger.
In the background subtle but beautiful notes of green apple candy, and some complex herbal notes. Dried seaweed on the shore.
    • Taste
Good arrival, surprisingly round and honeyed. The fruitness is a lot more mature, on cooked apples and ripe peach.
Also rather loud notes of vanilla and caramel, but they work out. Again dried ginger, just a touch of seasalt.
A hint of the gritty, porridgey side returns on the midpalate, but only adds a nice sense of balance and cohesion.
    • Finish
Nice, dry, long and very much typical of a coastal malt now. Pronounced mineral notes, cashews/almonds, apple skins and a lick of salt/seaweed.
The finish is really refreshing and makes you crave the next sip immediately.

Very neat malt. Delicious light-fruited maritime, I liked the palate even better than in the nose. More interesting than the new 12er, rougher, does not look so soft washed.
    • Nose
Caramel sweetness, then bright fruits, green apple, grape, a little sour the whole thing. Slightly herbaceous towards a tea bag and a certain "saltiness".
    • Taste
Here, too, bright fruits, herbs and a malt note are added.
When swallowing what would probably be interpreted as "maritime".
    • Finish
slightly tart but very pleasant finish, which stays longer than expected.

  25. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 82 points Super Administrator

Once known as 'cheapest of the cheap' among Scotch drinkers, the quality of this Cinderella malt has improved significantly over the past years. Hailing from the Isle of Mull, Tobermory 10 features a lovely marine quality. On the nose, you get light, crisp and floral notes with butterscotch, sour berries and anise sweetness lingering in the background. The taste is zesty, peppery dry and rather astringent in the development. Along with its medium-length, malty and chocolaty bitter finish, this Single Malt has a real personality that will not suit every palate.

Real Strangers part, exciting, and quite complex, but for my taste too mineral.
    • Nose
That's what I call a maritime nose, mineral, salty sea air, iodine, natural yoghurt and some smoke. Then comes a note that is close to Obstler, with apple, pear, plum and cherry. Everything is underlaid with a nice vanilla note and fresh garden herbs.
    • Taste
Easy onset, silky mouthfeel. The mineral, slightly smoky note is back, but without the salty. I have an association of pebbles. Then come back the apples and pears with vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium. Still very mineral. Slightly peppery oak, and the Obstler note.

A very fine nose on the Tobermory 10, but a little rough on the palate. Will ckeck out some older bottlings to see if age softens the dram.
    • Nose
I get some sherry notes on the first wiff than vanilla and a wee hint of peat. some exotic fruit, ripe pineapple? Cooling menthol. a powerful yet young and somewhat raw nose, but never sharp or unpleasant. I like it!
    • Taste

A very good whisky. Not as complex as the nose suggests, but still quite unique and very satisfying, unless you don’t like the taste of anise.
    • Nose
Very distinct and complex nose. Has a yeasty base note reminiscent of rice wine which takes a little getting used to. Notes of barley sugar, vanilla, freshly cut grass, wintergreen and nutmeg. Hints of ginger and anise.
    • Taste
A gentle, slightly sour arrival with acacia honey, lemon juice and cucumber with a hint of cranberries. Gradually builds an intense note of black pepper, sea salt and anise.
    • Finish
The black pepper and anise fades fairly quickly, leaving behind a gentle lingering note of cucumber.

A nice little island whisky. Water makes it more acidic / juicy; somehow teenager. But that has a certain charm ...
    • Nose
... and again made the beginners mistake ... the nose sunk deep into the glass & strong / sturdy air brought. No wonder the brain signals "stinging". However, it should be noted that the Tobermory has 6% more on the chest than many a colleague and in view of this, it does not seem completely outlandish that the alcohol is somehow reflected in the nose. If you breathe deeply again, you will see "green" notes of malt, a very slight idea of sea air (or if I want to smell the coast, the distillery lies directly on the sea), indefinable notes of wood, vanilla and a hint of Salt. If you give it time, lush, full malt notes seem to prevail. A few drops of water seem to intensify the malty scent. Small crumbs of peat and old chocolate roll over oak staves.
    • Taste
Also here at the beginning somehow "green". Then develop glockige malting tones, a few very salty sounds and a touch of oak. Water flushes away the "green impression"; the whisky is getting saltier, fuller and juicier. On a floor of oak and malt, lemony notes and hints of apple appear.
    • Finish
Pretty long finish with vanilla cream and white finely ground pepper. The tongue is sustained and dense on addition of water. Small punctured sour notes of green apples & a few splashes of lemon juice.

I drank Tobermory only twice, for the first time Nethar's 15 yo on the Xth BR tasting in HK. It had the same strength as the 10 yo I had halfway through the pre-Christmas swap with Cyrus. Yeah, well, he's got something to do with it.
    • Nose
A special mix of malt, citrus, spice, ground nuts, woody woods, maybe I can feel the wood, a slight gust of dullness, as if it is smoky or cruel, but not to the extent of the Ardbegs, this ingredient is gentle. I also find sea salinity. You do not have to smell out of glencairn, it is quite distinctive. (85 b)
    • Taste
Malt, with lemon peel, citrus, I'm full of fun. Gradually it turns into oak, creamy woody. The light bitterness comes and goes back into the creamy chocolate finish. (84 b)

A very different and interesting malt. I liked it.
    • Nose
Bright fruits, light oak spiciness, iodine, seaweed, maritime air, citrus fruits, lemon zest or lemongrass. All together supported on a light hint of vanilla in the background. After the first sip it becomes sweeter and the vanilla becomes more noticeable, while the maritime aromas and the bright fruits fade a little to the background.
    • Taste
Sweet and creamy at first. Vanilla and spiciness, white pepper, juicy orange.
    • Finish
Medium finish with spiciness from the oak, no bitterness at all. Becomes a little dry.

I really liked Ledaig 10, it's time to compare it with a colleague on the distillery.

    Color: light gold

Aroma: red wine, overripe plum and hint of peat, and more precisely on the smoke from a burnt pile of raw leaf. Very wet and sour oak stump, moist tobacco leaf, old leather briefcase. Herbs moist and juicy, a little marinade and cloves. Moss on the wet stones. The aroma is very humid, powerful and tight. Great!

Taste: marinated mushrooms, raw oak, stone, tobacco and cigars, and extinguished the fire - a bouquet that is in the first sip, very colorful! Then appears the oak bitterness and sweetness of plum and vanilla. The oily and dense taste.

Aftertaste: first tart from oak and blackthorn, then the land becomes sweeter, a little smoke and embers. Old leather and tobacco leaf. Wood later, and it, along with leather and tobacco long enough shimmer. Duration, greater than the average.

Conclusion: A wonderful malt! Reading the reviews about it, I thought nothing special, but I really liked it, hooked. A sort of "Delmor 18 light." Magnificent and harmonious aroma, balanced taste nice rolling in the finish. I can say that 10 Tobermory quite on par with the 10 th Ledaig. It's just that each has its own merits. I just love pickles, tobacco and whisky skin, well pro peat topics I generally keep quiet. And then just by a few. Delicious very bottle was gone instantly, in fairness, Ledaig 10, also came to an end) It is a real, man, brutal whisky with character.

A bit of a puzzler, this one. On the nose, it's sweet at first, with some almond, nuts, raisins, malt, sirup, and salty touches. If you add some water, you get sweet red fruit, gingerbread, but it also loses some consistency and becomes a bit watery.
Taste: initially it comes in sharp with a bit acidity, than leather, oil and sweet tastes join the palate. If you add some water, you notice oak, with notes of salt and bitter. After about 15 to 20 minutes it settles down a bit and opens up nicely, releasing some sweeter notes, with soft oak and grasses.
The finish is medium long, with hints of oak, leather, velvet, sirup and salt.

Conclusion: it's definitely a maritime scotch, and it barks a bit at the same tree as Clynelish 14 yo, but it lacks the balance and a bit of the complexity of the latter. You usually get one taste dominating the others, whereas the Clynelish releases its taste palate far better. I feel 10 years of maturation is perhaps a bit young for this scotch to reach its full potential. On the plus side: the bitter and salty elements of this scotch go really well with some dark chocolate, which makes it a fine companion for a late afternoon rainy November Sunday.

A good beginner, but somehow I think he is out of shape, a little bit rass. Nevertheless, he remains interesting and shows his island origin.
    • Nose
Pungent at first, vanilla and light sea breeze, salty nuts, citrus fruits, tangerines, lemon zest, tart honey, it looks youthful without being, green apple, herbs, grass, malt, white wine cream
    • Taste
quite mild, sweetish creamy, pleasant, oak, vanilla, salty, apples, alcohol
    • Finish
Apples, vanilla, oak spiciness but little bitterness, malt, salty, discreet smoke, a little meaningless, rather short

Wow! This is a really good beginner in the range of Tobermory. For 10 years, he has already noticed some flavors. Slight deductions are only for the much too short departure.
    • Nose
first neat spicy with a dash of bitter oak; then a pleasant sweetness comes along; Vanilla and bright fruits; Forest honey; a few bitter herbs are also there; the alcohol is very well integrated, only a few slight menthol notes are felt; The spice remains the dominant flavor even after a long time in the glass
    • Taste
slightly creamy; again spicy and sweet; slightly bitter oak; Hazelnuts, vanilla and light apples; a slight tingle of alcohol is there
    • Finish
      short; again pleasantly spicy; Pepper, vanilla and cereals; with a little chocolate, the spice stays on the palate for a longer time;

A quite unique character with the oily grassiness in the direction of some Blair Athols.
    • Nose
Some pear and honeydew, a nice apply waft, strong oily grassiness. Earthy tones, lemon. A bit tender and the booze comes to the fore from thereunder. Some cider, rather round sweetness, no bitter tones.
    • Taste
Salty and full, blackcurrant, chicory and celery. Grassy and greasy tones, a faint toffee-oak. Very stingy and a bit thin.
    • Finish
      Grassy oak, middle-long.

I like it very much. Is quite complex, good in balance and offers in addition to the ease and tension. I can imagine that I often have it in my glass.
    • Nose
Honey and alcohol. Later, the alcohol goes back to a bearable level, the honey too, for which develops a somewhat artificial pear flavor. After a while, I suspect smoke, aromas of tar and burned coal stove lighters ("dry spirit") point to it. When heated, the smoke is confirmed as a bacon note, everything is well integrated.
    • Taste
Significantly warm, strong onset, honey sweetness with some cocoa in the background, to the back mocha and dark, sticky sweets. Late comes eucalyptus. The mouthfeel is very pleasant.
    • Finish
Sweetness and oak have disappeared rather quickly, but now a nice, slightly salty smoky flavor develops. The finish is also quite long.

Tobermory and its heavily-peated Isle of Mull stable mate, Ledaig, have recently
been re-packaged and offered at 46.3%abv in non-chill-filtered format. Fresh and
nutty on the nose, with citrus fruit and brittle toffee. A whiff of peat.
Medium-bodied, nicely textured, quite dry on the palate with delicate peat, malt
and nuts. The finish is medium to long, with a hint of mint and a slight citric

    The nose was not
really convincing, but on the palate this is quite nice. Very affordable,
    around 30 EUR. Thanks, Pat!
    • Nose
      While I get some
apples on the nose, it is dominated by coastal elements. Think seaweeds, salt,
but also wet hay and some oatmeal. A touch of vanilla and something floral as
well. It is a bit dirty, if you know what I mean.
    • Taste
      I get a lot more
fruit on the palate. Apples, oranges, but also a slice of pineapple. Hint of
banana. That is countered nicely by the salty notes. Some woodsmoke. This is
      better than expected.
    • Finish
      The finish is fairly
short on apples, sweet malt and a whiff of salt and pepper.

on the nose: Tobermory typical note of bitter, slightly sourish grain, spicy rye, "fat", relatively heavy, pleasant mild buttery nose, nice ex-bourbon notes, less citrus, vanilla and sweetness, more of oak, bitter almond , Onions, oregano, slightly maritime / salty, relatively dry
In the mouth: again the spicy grain, strong caraway-fennel anise tea, with some caramel, then comes oak, again here very pleasant oiliness, fat also fits here, a little salty and tingling, despite the 10 years of low alcohol
on the finish: long with oak, anise and some salt

When I first opened this it was very farmyardy. Over the first half a bottle it improved immeasurably and these notes are based on the end of the bottle.

This wasn't great at first but after a while it's become very acceptable. I always quite liked the old Tobermory 10 (apologies to the many who didn't) but this is a significant improvement. Very acceptable
    • Nose
Farmyard almost completely gone. Now I have fruit - loads of fruit - and quite some malt. There's also something that reminds me of Clynelish, though I can't put my finger on what it is. Good though.
The farmyard is still there but it's faint and perfectly acceptable.
    • Taste
Fruit. There's malt as well and some oily flavours. Traces of nuts? I think so, but faint
    • Finish

Touch of bitterness at first, soon gone. Spicy and still fruity.

  99. MARS scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Nose: There is a slight smell of somewhat decomposed organic waste.

(like when you peel an apple and you leave the peels overnight in open

air) mixed with used motor oil, iodine and algae. It is a bit of walnut,

a touch of lemon and aspirin as well as porridge and baked pear.

Mixed with of all this, I also have a strong smell of chalk.

Everything is very strange but well balanced and not as unpleasant as my words do suggest.

Taste: Very lemony. Sweet / acid with some spices (cinnamon, sage, thyme). Chalk still survives everything.

Smoky, somewhat lemony finish. Next comes several spices and a

slight astringency always mixed with lemon. After a moment some motor

oil and iodine appear mixed with a highly aromatic vanilla.
