Tasting notes from Ardbeg, by Master Distiller Dr. W. B. Limsden :
Delicious sweet notes of homemade fudge, licorice and treacle toffee are the first aromas to tingle the sense, followed by deep, rich chocolate and cherries (reminiscent of Black Forest Gateau), dried fruit (sultans, dates and raisins) and chestnuts. Through the sweetness, menthol notes of pine needles and wild mint are interwoven with aromatic rolling tobacco and herbal smoke.
Water reveals soft beeswax, linseed oil and dried fruit mingling with vanilla to give "moreish" fruit and nut chocolate. Sweet floral aromas of freshly cut violets, heater and lavender emerge; before fruity notes of limes and autumn berries are discovered. underlying notes of pine resin and coal smoke entwined with seaweed and a fresh ocean breeze add depth.
Smooth, chewy and tingly as mouth-watering citrus olis and tangy orange zest coat the palate. Rich and mead-like with dried fruit and nuts-raisins, cherries, dates, almonds and walnuts intermingling with biscuit flavours, cinnamon spice and dark chocolate. Hints of carbolic soap, menthol, salty sea spray and kelp are discovered in the background with smoky sweet rolling tobacco, roasted coffee and pine needles.
A long finish with soft notes of dark bitter chocolate and espresso, tobacco, dates and walnuts.
