Whisky Reviews for Glendronach 2009 HB

15 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.96 points

  1. DerSchreckliche scored this whisky 82 points Expert Junior

Nose: Quite fresh and alcoholic, followed by ginger spice, appears light.

In the mouth and in the finish you notice the youth, a bit sharp and impetuous. Grapefruit bitterness and a little dry at the end.

No it's not for me. Is that supposed to be 1st fill? Then that was probably a bad barrel

Who else tastes a little note of pistache?

  3. Fman scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Very alcoholic, doesn't necessarily get better with water. A weak Glendronach ...

Not all whiskies that are sold by IBs are necessarily better than the official versions and that single casks would be better than married whiskies. There are so many IBs that have to make a living and have to sell many bottlings. Single casks may stand out if they are good, but they can be negative to a distillery's quality if the wood isn't good.

In this case, both situations apply. This whisky is too alcoholic without water and too bitter with water. It's not balanced and doesn't live up to the quality that Glendronach would offer. I guess they would choose to marry this one (or to use different casks, who knows).

The nose is rather "leafy" and "earthy", like a forest in autumn. Then there is ginger bread, nutmeg and toffee. Then wood notes (dry wood), a mineral edge and some lemon zest. Far distant there is some old leather. Not unpleasant at all, but not overly expressive either.

Sweeter than expected, almost like confectionery or bubble gum. The alcohol stings. With water, there is a bitterness from grape pips that is not very pleasant. Old leather, plenty of spices (chilli pepper, ginger, nutmeg), tobacco, wood. Quite monolithic and austere.

Medium, but quite tannic. Again grape pip, lemon, chilli pepper, ginger, and nutmeg. Maybe a bit of leaf and leather.
